Five Years of Exceptional Classical Programmingon Maine Public Classical!
FIVE YEARS AGO THIS MAY, Maine Public launched an entirely new radio service calledMaine Public Classical with the expectation of sharpening Maine Public’s cultural focus and providing
our audience with the robust classical programming that our listeners and members had requested for years.Envisioned also as the home for opera, jazz, and specialty musical programs and performances, the newradio service initially launched over just a few signals and today is broadcast over seven frequencies acrossmuch of Maine and streamed online from Maine Public’s website.
Reaching this significant milestone would not have been possible without individuals, foundations, andbusinesses across Maine recognizing the value of the arts and how important access to cultural programmingcan be. One such individual is John Wasileski and his team at OceanView at Falmouth who continue to supportMaine Public’s efforts in the arts as the Premier Sponsor of Maine Public Classical.
We are celebrating this anniversary all this month on both Maine Public Classical and Maine Public Radio byairing short messages from our staff and some of our long-time listeners sharing what Maine Public Classical hasmeant to them. We want to hear from you, too!
What has Maine Public Classical meant to you? What is your Maine Public Classical MOMENT?
Send us a brief note to [email protected] or write to us at Music, Maine Public, 1450 Lisbon Street,Lewiston, Maine 04240 and share a story or two of why classical music is an important fixture in your life.We will share many of the submissions with our audience in a variety of ways over the course of May.
Thank you to everyone who has made Maine Public Classical possible, supported the service, and tune in eachweek. The future remains very bright for Maine Public Classical, the home for classical music in Maine.

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of unforgettableMasterpiece programs airing on Maine Public Television, and we want to hear from you! What is your favoriteMasterpiece program of all time?
“Being a detective story addictive, it is so difficult to
choose between Prime Suspect and Inspector Morse. Then I have to choose between Helen Mirren andJohn Thaw. Oh, dear! What a choice! But Helen getsthe nod by a bare shake of my head for my favouriteMasterpiece series. Thank you for all the pleasure Iget from many Maine PBS programs I watch in myhome in Nova Scotia as well as Masterpiece, such asNewsHour every night.” –Mel Parsons
When I was in high school, I watched The Six Wives
of Henry the Eighth, religiously with my Mom. Thoseshows were the catalyst to my love of English andEuropean history. I wish I could watch it again. It wouldbring my Mom back to me for a while. We would talkabout what happened for a week until the next episode.
– Claire Preece
My all time favorite program was Cadfael starring
Derek Jacobi back in the ‘90s. There was somethingabout the knowledge of the world and understanding ofhumankind of this soldier turned monk that resonateddeeply for me. Plus, I greatly enjoy history, especiallythe Medieval period. I find it fascinating to get a senseof what life was like back in that time, and I know I cancount on PBS to do the research to make its programmingas authentic as possible. – Don Osier

“We set out to find a new home with character. We found it in Maine.”Former Bon Appetit editor, Pat Brown, still visits New York but she has discovered that living at Thornton Oaks affords plenty of cultural opportunities. “If you’re looking for interesting things to do, you don’t have to look very far,” Pat says. “Auditing classes at Bowdoin College; Bowdoin International Music Festival; Midcoast and Portland Symphonies; Maine State Music Theatre; Portland Museum of Art; Bowdoin Museum—and world-class restaurants too.”
What awaits you at Thornton Oaks? To learn more contact Henry Recknagel by phone at 800-729-8033 or email at [email protected].
