MISSION The Fiver Children’s Foundation is a comprehensive youth development organization that makes a 10-year commitment to children from underserved communities throughout New York City and central New York. Through character-building summer and year-round out-of-school time programs, Fiver empowers children to make ethical and healthy decisions, to become engaged citizens, and to succeed in school, careers, and life.

Dear friends,

The Fiver Children’s Foundation’s 10-year program is full of milestones, both big and small, which are marked by stuff. Our children count down the days until they receive their Fiver T-shirts at the end of each camp session. They impatiently await the ceremony in which they are awarded dog tags, simple necklaces that display the positive characteristics that constitute what it means to be a Fiver. Program graduates revel in the glow of receiving their hooded sweatshirts, emblazoned with the Fiver logo and their class year.

Even greater than this stuff is the meaning that it carries for each of our children. The Fiver T-shirt, which they sport proudly year round, lets them wear their commitment on their sleeves, shows that they made it through two weeks away from home at Camp Fiver, and affirms that they will continue to embody the spirit of Fiver in their home communities. A courageous dog tag symbolizes their first attempt at riding a horse, or the bravery it takes to complete a 4-day backpacking trip. The hooded sweatshirt that each Fiver graduate receives after ten years of programs represents ten years of learning, growing and working towards a successful adulthood, and all the joys and challenges that brings.

However basic these items may seem, the stuff and its symbolism are important to our children. With one hundred percent of Fiver children coming from families that qualify for free or reduced lunch, our children face challenges beyond the basic coming-of-age struggles. The average income for a Fiver family of four is $27,000. Our young people live in neighborhoods where poverty, high crime rates, struggling schools, and inadequate social support put them at risk of not reaching their full potential. Only 66% of their peers graduate high school.

For our children, Fiver’s programming spaces are a safe haven, a second home, an escape and a promise of a better future. With them year round for 10 consecutive years of commitment, Fiver immerses young people in a culture of positivity, surrounds them with diverse and inspiring role models, provides a safe space to express themselves and builds a platform from which they lead. Fiver programs are the reasons our graduates make healthy choices for themselves, feel compelled to help others, graduate high school and go on to college.

Thank you for reading this year’s Annual Report. This is your glimpse into a Fiver experience, complete with symbolic milestones and the stuff we are made of. Consider it your Fiver t-shirt for 2013. We hope you wear it proudly.

Fiverly,

THOMAS H. TUCKER CHRISTIE KOFounder and Chairman Executive Director

A MESSAGE FROM TOM AND CHRISTIE

Page 4: Fiver Children's Foundation 2013 Annual Report

Upon referral, 100% of Fiver participants qualify for free or reduced lunch. In coming from economically disadvantaged circumstances and marginalized communities, Fiver participants are more at risk of not completing high school, engaging in risky behaviors, and abandoning college and career goals than their affluent peers.

THE NEED

Poverty is linked with negative conditions, including substandard housing, inadequate nutrition, lack of access to health care, unsafe neighborhoods, and under-resourced schools.

These conditions put children and teens at greater risk for negative outcomes: poor academic achievement, school dropout, behavioral problems, and physical health problems.

Dropouts earn less than high school graduates and are twice as likely to live in poverty.

Facing complex challenges, 16-24 year olds from low income families are 7 times more likely to drop out than their higher- income peers.

Negative effects are compounded by the barriers children and families encounter when trying to access academic and economic resources.

THE CYCLE

Fiver takes its name from Richard Adam’s celebrated work of fiction Watership Down.

The novel focuses on the survival, leadership, and courage of a group of rabbits, led by the visionary rabbit Fiver, who set out to find a better way of life. Inspired by this story, Founder and Chairman of the Board Tom Tucker established the Foundation in 1998 to benefit children from economically disadvantaged circumstances. What began as a summer camp has evolved into a comprehensive, year-round youth development organization.

Program participants, known as Fivers, progress through ten years of developmentally appropriate program stages. Partner organizations refer children who are in need of a long-term intervention like Fiver in order to achieve their full potential.

OUR APPROACH

4 Qualified for free or reduced lunch (less than $40,000 for family of four)

4 Age 8 or 9 4 Affiliated with partnering school and community-based

organization in an at-risk neighborhood

We pledge 10 continuous years of comprehensive services and opportunities to our participants, from referral at 8 to graduation at 18. Through an intentional culture of support we build meaningful, long-term relationships with each child and their family.

We grow our youth’s mental and physical spirits through the joys of positive experiences and build the tools they need to face adversity and succeed academically.

Fiver serves all children within a family and provides a network for parents. Our programs are experiential, inquiry-based, youth driven and provided free of charge.

HEALTHY RISK TAKINGWe provide safe alternatives to risky behavior. Teens embark on team challenges on low and high ropes course elements, day-long canoe trips, and overnight backpacking trips in the wilderness.

COMMUNITY Children live together in cabins at Camp Fiver, participate in all-ages programming, and build relationships with positive adult role models.

Fiver’s 10 years of programs are broken into 4 developmentally appropriate stages. All programs take place at our office space in Manhattan; our residential summer program, Camp Fiver, in Poolville, NY; at partner organizations, and throughout New York City. Fiver programs build character through:

FIVER ALUMNIRecognizing that the Fiver spirit lives on beyond 10 years, Fiver hosts Alumni programs to support graduates in their post-high school success and actively engages alumni as role models for current Fiver participants. An annual Alumni Week in January features a banquet, career and education panels, and a public speaking workshop.
