I must apologise that I will not be here in person – a long arranged wedding commitment ( not mine!!!) – but I hope you all have a good day. As well as the match, I am missing a sponsored lunch and match by the Wilmslow Half Marathon Committee. This Committee run a marvellous race based each year from the Rugby Club – this involves huge organisation with over 3500 runners. The Rugby members do their small bit on car parking and marshalling. This year the weather left it late and a cold drying wind helped us to park 600/700 cars in the ground, with a relatively happy groundsman, who is also on the Half Marathon Committee!! We are very grateful for their support today and thank them accordingly. Back to rugby and Altrincham Kersal. I was reading up on their history and I was overwhelmed with pages of information about their origins from 1897. It must have been a labour of love for whoever wrote it! Paraphrasing it down to a few lines!!! They were formed in a Deansgate Pub with pitches in Prestwich and decided to call themselves Kersal RUFC. They had a relatively nomadic existence around the area moving three times: Stretford in 1922 and Flixton in 1926, staying there until the early 1950’s. Major opponents in those days were Broughton Park, Preston GH, Sale and Manchester. I think, the first game against Wilmslow was in 1923 when Kersal won by 7 tries to 1. A move in 1952 ( I think ) to Timperley followed and they eventually settled at Stelfox Lane after toying with mergers with Manchester and Bowden. A couple of names sprang out as I was reading the tome, Pete Forrest, an old opponent ex Broughton Park and a referee nemesis of mine! and Pete Hughes. Those Wilmslow Veterans reading this today will remember him well! Kersal and latterly Altrincham Kersal have had a topsy rugby life with periods of quality then poor runs. Recently, against Wilmslow, their results are 5 wins and 2 losses. Wilmslow going up and down in the leagues followed by AK who dropped to our league this year. We had an exciting close game at AK before Christmas loosing 19-15 in a game that could have gone either way. AK are always well drilled and tenacious and I have been surprised by their position this year. Another surprise last week was their 29-43 loss at home to lowly Anselmians after easily beating them 20-33 away. Anselmians are our last game so we had better reassess our thinking on that game! Anyhow let us hope for an entertaining game today! The end of the season is a bit hectic. Following our successful work over the last few years in upgrading the infrastructure of the club to provide a good, warm and friendly experience as well as exciting rugby at all levels; we have been asked to hold various cups and finals from 3 Cheshire Senior Club Cup games to 4 Cheshire Schools Cup matches and, in May, 3 of the Raging Bull League finals plus a Junior Festival and other major events. I am proud we are doing this to promote Wilmslow, but I must especially thank Maurice Mimms, the Groundsman; Keith Booth, the Bar Steward and Barry Fisher, our Secretary for putting in sterling efforts to enable these functions to happen smoothly!!!!!! As this my final missive of the season, I hope all readers have been entertained by my musings on the RFU, leagues, professionalism etc. through the year and no doubt we will have more of the same next season!!!!!!!!!!

Good afternoon everybody and welcome to Wilmslow Rugby Club where we are entertaining our local

friends and rivals Altrincham Kersal RUFC. I must apologise that I will not be here in person – a long

arranged wedding commitment ( not mine!!!) – but I hope you all have a good day. As well as the

match, I am missing a sponsored lunch and match by the Wilmslow Half Marathon Committee. This

Committee run a marvellous race based each year from the Rugby Club – this involves huge organisation

with over 3500 runners. The Rugby members do their small bit on car parking and marshalling. This

their support today and thank them accordingly.

Back to rugby and Altrincham Kersal. I was reading up on their history and I was overwhelmed with

pages of information about their origins from 1897. It must have been a labour of love for whoever

wrote it! Paraphrasing it down to a few lines!!! They were formed in a Deansgate Pub with pitches in

Prestwich and decided to call themselves Kersal RUFC. They had a relatively nomadic existence around

the area moving three times: Stretford in 1922 and Flixton in 1926, staying there until the early 1950’s.

Veterans reading this today will remember him well!

Kersal and latterly Altrincham Kersal have had a topsy rugby life with periods of quality then poor runs.

Recently, against Wilmslow, their results are 5 wins and 2 losses. Wilmslow going up and down in the

The end of the season is a bit hectic. Following our successful work over the last few years in upgrading

the infrastructure of the club to provide a good, warm and friendly experience as well as exciting rugby

at all levels; we have been asked to hold various cups and finals from 3 Cheshire Senior Club Cup

Wilmslow RUFC is an open community

based club, offering a game to anyone

coming through the gates from the age of six upwards - with no

upper age limit.

Nevertheless, subscriptions and bar receipts are just not

sufficient to maintain the wonderful sports field we have here.

We, therefore,

acknowledge and thank all those individuals and

organisations, who have supported the club, the teams and

the players this season either by

sponsorship, advertising or

donation. Without them we just would

not be here.

Saturday 23rd. March 2013 North 1 West Wilmslow 29-0 Fleetwood Casting aside the mauling received at Leigh the week before, the Wolves convincingly won against the league’s basement club. They were never in any danger of making a banana skin of this game but it wasn’t their finest performance of the season, far from it. Four tries though were enough to take the maximum number of league points available. Coach Rick Jones was pleased with the outcome and that the side had been sufficiently motivated to hunt down the fourth try, when it would have been easier to have taken the foot off the pedal and to just coast home. But, he was disappointed by the way that the Wolves had allowed themselves to be dragged down into a shapeless niggle of an affair, particularly in the second half, when prop Jordan Ayrey had to leave the field with a recurrence of his shoulder problem and scrum half Andy Walker had to follow him with a painful looking bang on the knee. They were replaced by Mark Williams and Ollie Wilkinson. On the touchline though, Cheshire selector Dave Partington had enjoyed the way the Wolves were playing, commenting afterwards that they were always trying to do the right things, even though the execution was sometimes lacking. He seemed to concur with the opinion that this is a Wolves outfit, which if it can keep hold of most of its players and add a little more strength in depth next season has the potential to move up to the next level. Fleetwood will be moving back down after just one season to the North Lancs and Cumbrian League. Just one win in twenty four outings tells its own story. They will not have been the first club to find the step up to North 1 West rugby to be more demanding than expected. It happened to Kirkby Lonsdale but they bounced back up again after a season’s absence and have been much better prepared this time round. It also took Wilmslow not so long ago at least three attempts to adjust to this league. Fleetwood’s officials though were sanguine about the possibility of coming straight back up again, believing that it will take longer for their players to regain their confidence after the batterings they have received this season. For this game they had had to make ten changes from the side that had played Widnes the week before. The Wolves kicked off into the face of a stiff North Easterly. It wasn’t bringing any snow with it and it was dry but it was freezing cold. Several spectators, your correspondent included, found that the best place for relief from the biting wind was behind the goal line at the car park end of the ground, in front of a barrage of portaloos, erected for the following day’s Wilmslow Half Marathon. It’s possible that the Fleetwood players had also come to the same conclusion as they spent most of the first forty minutes deep in their own half. The Wolves weren’t quite purring like a finely tuned Mercedes during this period but they were certainly going through the gears as they tried to break down a spirited Fleetwood rear guard. It was ten minutes before a Bob MacCallum penalty gave his father on scoreboard duties anything to do. Moray MacCallum was still hanging the ‘3’ digit in place, when Wilmslow scored their first try, giving him something more to do. From the restart, scrum half Andy Walker had decided to put boot to ball but confounded everyone when the wind blew it backwards into the arms of Sam Cutts, today playing extremely well in the centre. Cutts decided to run and then to pass. Mike Black ran hard with it into the Fleetwood half before throwing an abominable pass in the general direction of Lawrence James’s boot laces on the right wing. Before the ball bounced, James gave it a good hoof and when it kindly sat up for him to collect twenty yards further on, he found himself with an easy run in under the posts. The visitors from Fleetwood were not amused but when you’re out of luck………………….. Rick Jones then got a Yellow Card for what looked like a verbal difference of opinion with referee Slater. The Wolves general dominance of proceedings though were not much affected by his absence but they still couldn’t put the final pieces together. A rare sortie into Wilmslow territory from, a stolen lineout, led to Fleetwood’s Ryan Riches having a chance to reduce the deficit and with the wind behind him, he should maybe have made more of the opportunity but he didn’t. Then on the stroke of half time, the Wolves won a good attacking lineout deep in Fleetwood territory. Black joined the line at pace and when he was held up just short, the ball was recycled for Walker to apply the coup de grace, burrowing low through a forest Fleetwood defenders’ legs. The Wolves could have been out of sight by half time and the expectation was that MacCallum would use the breeze to kick Wilmslow into good attacking positions so that the fun could really start. Up to a point, that’s what happened and a third try soon came along when the Wolves scrum pushed Fleetwood back over their own line for Walker to get the touchdown. What wasn’t on the script was that the visitors would start to disrupt the Wilmslow scrum and lineout and with the help of a series of penalties find the confidence and wherewithal to run the ball back at the Wolves defence. They may only have created one clear cut scoring opportunity but they most certainly bottled up the Wolves for long periods and forced them to defend with some urgency. Time was running out when a clean lineout win put MacCallum and the backs away in clear space. Ollie McCall joined the line and finding the Fleetwood defence absent, he just raced through the gap for try number four. Whether there would have been just as much space for McCall if the forwards hadn’t all got involved in the kind of mass brawl, which rugby players so enjoy, is open for conjecture. Referee Slater though was up with play and awarded the try, almost certainly oblivious to the skirmish that was going on behind him. Afterwards Jones picked out Sam Cutts for a really good showing in the centre and also commended the work of his fitness coach Craig Cooper, who although side lined from playing for most of the season, has enthusiastically kept the side’s physical conditioning up to the mark. It has shown in recent weeks.

Martin Hill sees Wilmslow High School complete a hat trick of wins in the Cheshire Schools Cup. The club’s floodlights were put to good use as Wilmslow hosted the county schools cup final. Lymm High School were first out of the blocks pressurising Wilmslow High School who had most of the early possession. First points from a penalty went to Lymm. WHS hit back with a sweeping backs move and wing Tom Duffy, who looked lively all evening, made a superb break down the right flank, beating three defenders. He was ackled 10m short of the line but there was excellent support at hand and quick ruck ball allowed full back Lewis Gallagher to take a pop ball in the centre and to change the angle for an excellent try. WHS then settled, playing well in patches, but not pushing on to play dominant multi phase rugby. A further try and an excellent long range goal from Wilf Noden gave WHS a 15-3 half time lead. Lymm started the second half by switching the kick to the lightly guarded right flank. WHS failed to deal with the bouncing ball and Lymm capitalised by securing a five metre scrum from which they got a forwards try. WHS then produced their best twenty minutes of fifteen man rugby, running in three tries. No.8 Simon Green, flanker Rory Hill and centre Elliott Rowe all made fine breaks. No. 10 Callum Westaway, showing sleight of hand and neat footwork dummied over from twenty metres out and skipper Simon Green ran sixty metres for the try of the match, to earn for himself the WHS rugby player of the season award. The cup secure at 35-8, WHS made a number of substitutions, rewarding the bench for their support during the season and in a fine gesture coach Matt Bebbington ensured the finishing fifteen were all in their final school year, so that they could finish their school rugby career altogether as a single age group. Unsurprisingly, the foot came of the pedal enabling Lymm to have the last word with a late score on the left flank. It seems that several of this year’s senior colts side will be available to the club next season. Conor McMurdock, Jordan Griffiths and harry Patch are likely to be joined by Jaimo Venables, Matt Burgess and Big Travis. Martin is confident that others will also be available when they return from university during holiday periods. Sadly though, prospects for a senior colts side next season are not good so those without school rugby will have to be directed towards the Developmentals and Ravens.

Next season’s WHS team should be OK. It has never been just as strong a year as their illustrious predecessors but it has been strengthened by the arrival of prop or back row Sam Lawton from Knutsford High School, who already plays for Cheshire and Sale Sharks U18, and fly half/centre Jake Dickinson from Tytherington High School. He has already featured in Cheshire and Welsh representative rugby. Add to these two, Dan Pym, a big front row player also selected for Cheshire and Irish Exiles U18.

The sixth form intake normally sees the arrival of some good players but unfortunately the usually reliable Bramhall High School hasn’t provided any rugby talent at year 12 this year and it’s understand it will be the same next year. WHS should be bolstered by the arrival (subject to exams) of Christian Taylor from Tytherington HS. Chris is currently the England U16 hooker and is also in the Sale Sharks academy. It is thought that he will be joined by Stockport Grammar's lock, Sam Haley, another in the Sale Sharks academy. The current WHS U16s have several decent players who should also be pushing for the 1st team squad. Finally, Jonathan Legget, who managed rugby at the school, is moving to a new role at MGS but there’s no news that coach Matt Bebbington will be stepping down.

Saturday 6th. April 2013 North 1 West Carlisle 40 - 25 Wilmslow

The Wolves were going to have to be at their very best if they were to turn over Carlisle on their own cabbage patch. The Cumbrians were still in with an outside chance of making the play offs for National 3 rugby next season should either of the two front runners slip up and that would be motivation enough. In football parlance, that’s equivalent to advancing from the Blue Square Premier to the Football League. As it was the Wolves had to travel without several of their first choice picks so the management took the opportunity to blood young aspirants in what they knew would be a serious test for them. In going down by four tries to three and four penalties to two, nobody could say that anyone let themselves down. Although after the opening minutes, they were always chasing the game, they managed to stay in touch and right up to the final play, they were still in with a

chance of taking something away for their efforts. Nevertheless, Carlisle aren’t lying in third place by accident and on the day it was clear to see the difference between a top of the table and mid table side. Carlisle were well prepared and organised and just had the edge when it mattered in most aspects of the game. In the scrum, they disturbed the Wilmslow heel more than once, in the ruck their forwards were just a bit more vigorous in attacking and stealing the ball. Although man for man smaller than their Wilmslow counterparts in the pack, they only lost one lineout all afternoon. Their handling and kicking out of hand, whilst not perfect, was more reliable than their visitors’ as was their ability to not throw the ball away when in possession. For all their undoubted promise, the Wolves have to advance to the Carlisle levels if they are to fulfil their potential. It will require hard work and practice both as a unit and individually to iron out costly errors and mistakes and to develop the skills and composure to consistently deliver when under pressure. In that respect rugby is no different from any other game. You have to put in the graft on the training pitch. It’s worth noting that this season the Wolves have a 100% winning record against the league’s bottom four sides, close to 50% against the next six, all mid table sides, but only six defeats to show for their efforts against the top three. With something like spring approaching at last, the Wolves got off to a flyer of a start. A fine break through the middle by Sam Cutts really deserved more than the ensuing penalty kicked from under the posts by Bob MacCallum. Moments later, MacCallum prodded the Wolves into good attacking territory, the forwards drove well from the lineout and when quick ball was crisply passed down the line, Angus Crawford, making his debut on the right wing, took his chance well. At this stage he must have thought that first team rugby would be easy. The home side though were decidedly unphased by this turn of events and an immediate response when the Wolves failed to deal with the restart gave Carlisle’s Glen Weightman his first successful kick of the afternoon. Five minutes later, an inaccurate Wolves clearance kick gave Weightman the chance to counter attack from half way and his pass put second row Ryan Feeney in for a try. Centre Rick Hughes then made a fine run for the Wolves which yielded nothing but moments later when Carlisle lost the ball in the Wilmslow half, Sam Cutts made another incisive run before making a perfectly timed his inside pass to Tom Rayner for the Wolves second try. There was no disguising though that the home side was building a head of steam, No. 8 Josh Holmes was becoming increasingly prominent with his powerful runs, and when they turned over a ruck close to the Wolves line, they were able after a couple of phases to stretch the defence for right winger Matt Minett to score. Twenty minutes played and Carlisle were now leading 17-15. For the next twenty minutes, the Wolves found it hard to get out of their own territory but paradoxically when they did it opened the way to Carlisle’s third try. A long booming kick by Weightman had the Wolves’ Crawford scrambling all over the place and Carlisle left winger Dan Holmes nipped in to take the ball and to run all the way to the line. Crawford could be excused if he now thought that first team rugby was possibly more difficult than he had initially thought. A further Weightman penalty had the home side 27-15 to the good at the break. The Wolves had their chances in the first quarter of the second period. There was another decent run from Crawford but their undoing was their inability to deliver the final pass sufficiently accurately to finish anything off. MacCallum’s second penalty was poor reward for some enterprising play and this was soon cancelled out by Weightman landing his third and fourth kicks as the home forwards started to get the ascendency. A late try from Mike Clifford when the Wolves profited from a loose ball briefly raised hopes but only ten minutes remained and time was running out when in the penultimate play of the game, Weightman put a penalty onto the Wolves line, they won the lineout, Holmes got away with what may have been a penalty offence and full back Damian Armstrong joined the line for the fourth try. The final scoreline was probably a fair reflection of what had been an entertaining game. Wolves coach Rick Jones recognised his side’s shortcomings. We just weren’t precise enough, he said, we made too many errors when we had chances and when we lost a few scrums and rucks that we shouldn’t have done, it was hard to get the ball back off them. There’s still plenty to work on. It’s still work in progress to make that difficult step forward.

Paul Sheridon wishes the Wolves every success in 2012-13

The Youngest Touch Judge (An)Gus Fiennes almost certainly became the youngest ever touch judge to officiate at a North 1 West League match. Fleetwood had arrived at The memorial Ground on 23rd. March without a touch judge and when the word went round the ground for a volunteer, eleven year old Gus stepped forward. He was down to watch the game and presumably to keep an eye on his father to ensure he didn’t exceed his medication allowance from the bar. The prospect of running the line was a far more attractive proposition and by all accounts, he got all the calls absolutely right. It’s been a year for young officials in this league. An eighteen year old, James Campbell, refereed Wirral against Carlisle back in February and fifteen year old Ross Higham is now completing his second season as Assistant Referee at Liverpool St. Helens. At the other end of the scale, Carlisle’s touch judge against Anselmians was a youthful 73 years young and his Anselmians counterpart 74. Keep it up, Gus. There’s a long way to go yet. Anselmians The final relegation spot of the season was filled by Anselmians on Easter Saturday, when they were sent down after two seasons as a result of a home defeat by Leigh. There were rumours, probably justified, that a benefactor had belatedly been forking out to get the Tongans or Fijians to play for them. Further evidence, if any were ever needed that bringing in a few players for cash just doesn’t work. Rugby isn’t like bringing in a couple of tradesmen when you need them to do a bit of joinery or plastering If a club is going to pay, then it has to be part of a properly thought out strategy. When will the lesson be properly learned? Who’s for the Midlands Once again it looks as though some club may have to drop into the Midlands next season. I don’t want to be alarmist about this but our status as a Northern Division club could easily come under the microscope if results elsewhere go against us. We’ve had it easy in the last few years with so many of our opponents in or around Manchester. Last season, we got away with it when Northwich volunteered to go into the Midlands. Stockport, coming down from National 2 North may have done us a favour by having already elected, I understand, to go into the Midlands but it might not be enough and we could well find ourselves to be next in line. Right now, Wigton and Broughton Park, providing they beat Eccles in their play off, will be returning to N1W after just a season away and Warrington look likely SLC1 winners. The problem then starts when you look at the clubs in danger of dropping out of National 3 North. Two of them are from the North West. Kendal and Birkenhead Park are both well adrift of eleventh placed Bradford and Bingley. Let us just hope that either Sale or LSH, which ever one it is, can win their play off against any one of Morley, Wheatley Hills, Cleckheaton or Sheffield. Failing that, we may have to re-acquaint ourselves with Whitchurch and Stoke and then dust off the map to locate the

likes of Barkers Butts, Berkswell & Balsall and Hereford. Heaven forbid! Showers at Last Dave Scanlon’s upload to the web site is euphoric about the showers, which he says now work properly. The £10K spent, courtesy of a 50% grant towards the cost from the RFU, has finally ensured that there’s now sufficient pressure to push the hot water through the system. If you’re keen to understand the technicalities, then speak to the installation expert Jimmy Toole but I guess it’s a bit like the pump that many of us have installed on the shower at home for exactly the same reason. Lack of water pressure! Dave says that the problem went back 40 years but he forgets that back then a shower was just a quick rinse after immersing yourself into a hot brown muddy coloured communal bath with your team mates and very popular that was to. A few of you reading this will remember a highlight of the vets’ season sometime back in the 1980s, when to celebrate the departure of a certain Dave Leslie to a new job in Holland, the team drank copious jugs of Black Velvet in the bath. The host club provided the Guinness and the champagne came from a certain Robin Thompson. When that ran out the event continued with jugs of plain Guinness. I digress. Dave Scanlon adds that it’s now time to enter Phase 2 of the club’s redevelopment plan with a description of some of the projects being considered. Penalties for Misconduct The Carlisle programme last weekend had plenty in it on the subject of good behavior by both players and spectators. This was in large part in response to an incident at the end of last season when a touch judge at their ground was injured and in the subsequent fracas an unfortunate individual had his jaw and cheek bone broken. Long standing Carlisle officials of exemplary repute were required to attend an RFU disciplinary hearing. The charge of permitting an unauthorised person to enter the playing enclosure was admitted and Carlisle was fined £100 plus costs plus VAT, various administrative requirements were demanded and there was a deduction of 10 league points suspended for two years. Players and spectators at Wilmslow, take note. Electronic Scoreboards These are slowly being introduced at our level. Last season, we saw one at Broughton Park, you can bet it’s the only one amongst SLC1 clubs, and last week saw the unveiling of a new one at Carlisle, sponsored apparently by Heineken. Turnover in Carlisle’s bar is over four times what we achieve here, which may influenced Heineken’s decision. The high turnover is due to a number of reasons, one of which is the apparent popularity of the club premises amongst Carlisle’s funeral directors for putting on funeral wakes. As a digression, we can add that the beer in their clubhouse is excellent, nearly as good in fact as the beer served here, and that Andy Vassell excelled himself in mixing lime based gin and tonics on the bus journey home.

A magic wand or the “dream team”?...Any event boasting twenty nine years of success, over 75,000 runners, one million miles run and with in excess of £1,000,000 raised for charitable causes must have the right formula ! And the formula? Select the right nuts and bolts then mix together with a generous helping of elbow grease!! Some of the numbers from this year’s race:

Race entry limit of 5,200 reached by January (ten weeks ahead of the race)

Over 400 marshals

Over 11,000 bottles for runners

Over 20,000 metres of police road closures

A full supporting team of UKA race officials, traffic police, duty police, emergency doctors, paramedics, ambulances with crews, St Johns Ambulance, Red Cross and associated First Aid Support.

Delivery and use of 75 portaloos

Hand delivery of advance race day warning notice to every surrounding house

Over a mile of crowd barriers

Posting and packing of 5200 race packs, with pre race day packing of 5200 athlete “goody” bags

Electronic “chip” timing for every runner at 10k, 10 miles race finish

Race day erection of start and finish gantry with briefing for over 400 marshals

Complete course clearance within hours of race day finish

Full collection of any remaining course litter complete by mid day on the day following the race The numbers only tell a small part of the success of the half marathon. The race has often featured as one of the top UK

races by readers of running magazine “Runners World” while having regularly incorporated the AAA English Half Marathon Championships. The race has been graced by current Olympians, ex Olympians and not forgetting Olympians in the making! But the true winners are the many charities that benefit from both the thousands of runners but also from the donations made by the race committee. Businesses can talk about corporate social responsibility and our Prime Minister about “big society” but any event that can manage to unite an entire community covering Macclesfield Borough Council, The British Red Cross, Wilmslow Police, Wilmslow Rugby Club, Wilmslow Running Club, Wilmslow Hockey Club, Wilmslow Lacrosse Club, Wilmslow Wayfarers Cricket Club, Wilmslow Ladies Circle and eight different Scouts, Guides and Brownies Groups most certainly has a winning formula. So who provides the elbow grease and the very necessary nuts and bolts to create the winning formula? The race committee meets from September onwards and is a completely autonomous committee comprising twelve serving members with representation from Wilmslow Running Club, Wilmslow Rugby Club and the Wilmslow Phoenix Club. With over 150 years of combined experience, it is little surprise that the nuts and bolts are still working like a well oiled machine! And the cog is ready to spring into action in readiness for 2014, as always with the aim to make the race slicker still each year. As always, the race committee is indebted to the continued support from sponsors “Waters”, “Etihad Airlines”, “Running Imp International” and the specialist running shop “Running Bear”.

Nick Bishop

As we get towards the end of another season, I thought I’d t nominate my high and low points of the year. Lows were our losses to Widnes and Leigh; 51 points against and nil for. The losses at Rochdale and Liverpool St.Helens were both hard to bear as both could have been won. The main high was the 25-24 win at Vale of Lune, which was possibly the first dent to their hopes of promotion. Another high was the the Cheshire Vase match at Sale. Although a loss by 35-29 it was a great performance. The main “high” though must be the team spirit. Despite the loss of our coach at Christmas, the Ricks, Hughes and Jones, and Craig Cooper have kept the guys together and brought some fine results, particularly the away win at Wirral. Although we took a bit of a beating away at Carlisle last week, the coach journey home was a pleasure with a large purchase from Tesco’s drink department and some songs, sadly, not of the rugby variety. The same coaching staff have agreed to continue for 2013-14, so I hope we can continue to improve, by keeping the players we have and accepting any players who may come to us. It would be good to see us pushing for promotion. Mention has been made elsewhere in the programme about four Wilmslow players in Cheshire’s under 20’s team that have reached the National semi-finals. Three have regularly appeared on the Wolves, which just goes to how important it is that clubs have a feeder system from their junior section. We are lucky to have an excellent rugby-playing school on

the doorstep but our juniors come from all sorts of school and some of them don’t play rugby at school. Sadly, our junior colts had to pull out of the Colts League in December. With only 18 players to call on at best, when they were all fit, there were frequently only 12 or 13 available come a Sunday. It just wasn’t possible to fulfil their fixtures despite all the efforts of the coaches. In their wisdom, the Raging Bull Colts League have fined the club £95.00 for the withdrawal, which seems harsh when the club really did its best to put out a team. Incidentally, captain of the side was Jeremy Sumner, son of former player, Giles, and great, great, great grandson of James Sumner, who played for the 1st XV in the 1880’s. James may even have played against Kersal in October 1898, a 9-0 win for Wilmslow. The very successful merger at Senior Colts level between Wilmslow and Kersal could well be a model for future years at these difficult age groups Finally, may I thank the half-marathon committee for sponsoring today’s game and welcome the representatives from the Hockey and Lacrosse clubs, who help make the annual half-marathon the great success it is.

The Wilmslow Half Marathon..The premier half marathon in the North West.

ALTRINCHAM KERSAL Our visitors today lie third in a three club cluster including Wilmslow and Leigh in which none of us can finish the season higher than seventh or lower than ninth in the table. So there’s not much at stake for either club apart from a bit of local pride and maybe a desire to complete their league programmes on a high note as we all start thinking about next season. Whatever happened last weekend though when AK were turned over at home by relegated Anselmians? To add to their discomfort Anselmians were reduced to fourteen players when Loa got a straight red card on fourteen minutes. In a rare match report on the Anselmians web site, their correspondent states that they have quite enough ability and strength to bounce straight back up again. The Saints try scorers on the day were Brocken, Mafi, Rowlands, Whorton and Tane who was quite simply outstanding on the day . Mason converted three from five and kicked a further four penalties .

Generally a good day at the office adds their correspondent. Unfortunately, no report has been posted on the AK web site and neither club has provided any stats to rugbyroundup.com so I have no details of the AK team and scorers. In recent times AK have been yo-yo-ing between Level 5 and Level 6. The levels, at least, are constant even though the league changes the name of the divisions fairly frequently. Back this season at Level 6, their record will not end up much different from ours. After beating the Wolves 19-15 back in December, they then went on a losing run of seven matches, which only ended on 9th. March, when Fleetwood were the visitors to Stelfox. They then won at Manchester, only Fleetwood and Anselmians haven’t, and followed that up with a home

win against Carlisle. Any win against Carlisle this season has been noteworthy. It’s worth adding that the losing run included both Sale and LSH and four games lost by six points or less. There were no hammerings amongst them so the spell probably looks worse than it really was. In any other year though seven losses on the trot would have had you deep in relegation mire but not this season, in which the bottom clubs have been a long way behind the rest. Remember last season, when in the penultimate game, Wilmslow were mathematically still in with a chance of relegation before finishing seventh and Broughton Park went down with 49 points

The D ir ty Dozen League

League N1W Forecasts

Sponsored by The Art i san Meat Company The first thing to say is that league points include the LSH v Sale match which took place on Thursday 28th. March. For those of you who

don’t know, it went to Sale by 20-14. Amongst the front runners Eagle Eye and Th’Howln Wolf got this one right but the Wizard and Nob

didn’t.

As for today, there are enough tricky ones for the punters to get wrong so results could have a significant bearing on the final league table.

Given that so much in this season’s league has already been decided there is the added riddle to solve as to which clubs will really be trying.

There could easily be some funny reults today and next week. On the face of it Anselmians should account for Manchester and if they beat us

in their last game and Kirkby lose theirs, they will have cause to rue the five point deduction incurred at the start of the season. You’d expect

Widnes to be too good for Kirkby Lonsdale but then again……… . Sale and LSH still have the title to sort out and I guess neither of them

will fancy a play off. This could go until the last weekend. I get the feeling that Vale have all but thrown in the towel and that Carlisle will be

keen to finish on a high note to establish their credentials as front runners for next season. Rochdale should see off luckless Fleetwood and

that leaves Wilmslow and Kersal. Anything could happen in this one.

Matches on 20th. April will be included but the last match scheduled for 27th. April when Leigh play Wirral but is the day after our dinner

when the prizes are due to be presented. The league administrator has ruled that it won’t count.

Saturday 23rd. March

It was bitterly cold at Vale of Lune, when Wirral arrived to hammer the last nails into Vale’s promotional coffin, if indeed they were needed. In quick succession, Vale have lost two games, both by a single point. Wirral with the wind behind them scored in the first minute through Craig Harvey to go 7-0 ahead and as half time approached Rob Pearl finished off a catch and drive. Andy Powers pulled one back for Vale, Ryan Stead restored Wirral’s advantage and then Nick Royle scored twice for Vale as they started to throw the ball around in the final quarter. The Wirral forwards though were not beaten and they worked their way up the field to earn a penalty which Harvey duly landed on 78 minutes to win the match 20-19. With a game in hand, Wirral look as though they could overhaul both Vale and Carlisle to finish in third place.

There were three tries apiece at Stelfox. AK led 12-0 at half time, Carlisle fought back to 12-12, each side then scored to tie it all up but AK got on top in the final minutes and a last minute of the game penalty by Rob Holloway won it for them and probably finished off any hopes that Carlisle may still have been nurturing for a play off place.

No surprises up in the Dales where Kirkby Lonsdale confirmed their continued interest in this league with a seven try 41-3 romp against Manchester.

Thursday 28th. March

Nathan Bailey, Steve Williams and Sam Stelmasek scored the three tries which sank LSH in this rearranged top of the table clash. It set up a tight run in as LSH’s lead was reduced to three points. It was a fine game with LSH enjoying the greater possession but coming up against a stoic Sale defence. Greg Smith scored a try to put LSH 7-5 ahead at half time but it wasn’t until Ian Stanley crossed in time added on that they got their second score and by then Sale were out of sight.

Saturday 30th. March

Anselmians’ fate was settled when Leigh were the visitors. It all depends on which Leigh side turns up on the day. This time they had Adam Dyson on the left wing scoring two early tries and No. 8 Calvin Crompton getting a third soon after. The Tongans got two tries back for the home side to make it 12-21 at half time but a third try for Dyson and a Jimmy Wilkinson drop goal tied it up for Leigh. What’s it about sides about to get relegated that their discipline goes to hell. Evidently, Anselmians tried plenty of the funny stuff to no avail, Fleetwood were niggly when they visited Wilmslow and all Manchester could offer when they visited us was a very firm upper cut to Adam Hewitt’s chin.

Not much at stake between Rochdale and Widnes. The home side were short of too many first choice players because of an Easter tour to Poland but that didn’t stop them scoring first, twice in fact to take an early 12-0 lead. Chris Atkin and Paul O’Connor scored before the break to level things up for Widnes and they then turned on their best display of the last two seasons to score five scintillating tries. Tough on a Rochdale side full of enthusiasm but ultimately well beaten.

Saturday 6th. April

Vale of Lune kept their fading chances of a play off place alive with a far from convincing win at Fleetwood. Relegated they may be but they weren’t in any mood to be humiliated and they made Vale work very hard for their win. The Fleet backrow of dave Fairbrother, Ainsley Pye and Dave Hart put in another sterling performance, half backs Tom Evans and Paul Bamber also made things as uncomfortable as they could for the visitors. After fifteen minutes of Vale pressure, Evans broke away to score for Fleetwood and it was only just before half time that prop Lee Acton forced himself over for the equalising score. A penalty from Evans then saw Fleetwood ahead at half time. They then went further ahead with a Fairbrother try from an Evans break early in the second half. Yet another Yellow Card for Fleetwood allowed James Hodder to reduce the deficit, Jimmy Moore then scored a try to put Vale in front for the first time and he then set up Andy Powers for the third try. Evans kicked another penalty for Fleet but the final word went to Lee Acton in the sixth minute of time added on, who ensured a bonus point for Vale.

All’s Well that Ends Well’ for LSH. Never has the phrase “a game of two halves” been more appropriate. After reaching half time with an untroubled 26-3 lead LSH just held on after an amazing Widnes fight back. That they did so in a torrid last ten minutes after such a disastrous first thirty, is in itself worthy of praise. In the first quarter Widnes hardly touched the ball as Greg Smith kick three penalties in the 5th, 11th and 15th minutes. The home side got on the board with a Kevin Leadbetter penalty after 23 minutes and were then only denied by a superb last man tackle from full back Ian Stanley. Widnes were then disrupted by a Yellow Card, allowing Jamie Clare to score from a scrum, followed by a 60m Matty Cunliffe break finished with a try by Sean Macklin. Despite another Yellow Card, Widnes really got going in the second half and inspired by Chris Atkin they ran in three tries in 12 minutes through Matty Smith, Atkin and Paul O’Connor. Smith got a penalty for LSH before Atkin again scored after breaking from midfield. With ten minutes to go, Widnes threw everything including the proverbial kitchen sink at LSH but it was a Smith penalty after 76 minutes which ensured Widnes had to score a try to save the day. LSH are now guaranteed a play off but they still have a tricky one against Wirral next week. At Heywood Road, a powerful opening half performance had Sale 41-0 ahead at half time against Kirkby Lonsdale. Ben Stelmaszek grabbed a hat-trick in the first ten minutes of the match, and the side went on to win 67-0, with the Stelmaszek brothers collecting just over 50% of the points scored.
