Dear FLA Members and friends,

Since the beginning of the year, our membership has

increased by a significant 40%. There are 15 possible

compounding factors that has contributed to that growth. One

key factor is Singapore’s economical structure changes. The

word “reformasi” has not been applicable to Singapore in

recent years. But, what we are witnessing and going through

is the road of painful structural policies paved by bumpy

productivity drive.

It is a tough road ahead of us, but push hard and long enough to make it to the

highway of scalability. What makes the difference on the highway is how big your

engine is. In that regard, there is no doubt that franchising and licensing are the

big engines for scalability. This is why many business owners are outfitting their

business with franchise engines. But, as with all engines, running a franchise is

not without its own costs and a myriad of challenges such as marketing, branding

and human nature.

FLA Singapore has always existed to steer you down the highway, and this is why

we have various events such as the FLAsia Show in October to promote local

businesses on an international platform, The FLA Awards to recognize

outstanding franchise businesses and of course, the Fundamentals of Franchise

Management to guide and teach businesses how to expand intelligently. We have

also launched a coffee-table book and directory entitled the “Franchising &

Licensing Icons of Singapore”.

For expansion beyond our borders, we have overseas matchmaking missions and

tradeshows (Business Development), workshops and seminars (knowledge

development) and lastly, we are working on an exciting new project that will be

unveiled in 2016 to help businesses franchise.

comprehensive understanding on the

franchise industry in Singapore, FLA

launched a nation-wide franchise

retail survey (building up an extensive

database with over 17,000 retail

outlets) encompassing 100 shopping

malls, all existing MRT/LRT stations

and Bus interchanges in Singapore.

The sample size excludes stores that

are scattered across streets,

residential areas, hospitals, hotels,

office buildings, etc and also filtered

out the franchise brands and

produced analytic summaries that are

condensed in a concise and

comprehensive report.

FLA Singapore’s tips about franchising

Ever thought about franchising? Well of course you have, that’s why you are reading this article from our

monthly newsletter. Franchising is an excellent way for businesses to expand without the risks of starting

a self-owned outlet. This is because the franchisee will bear the costs of setting up the outlet and face the

risks involved. But in return, they get access to a pre-existing customer base and a strong brand that has

taken capital, marketing, effort and time to create and of course, the support of the franchisor.

This can seem like a daunting and intimidating task with risks for both sides. However, find the right

partner, and it could be very successful and profitable. Below you will find FLA Singapore’s tips about

franchising and licensing from our Chair, Donna Lee.

1.) Before venturing into franchising, business owners should ask themselves these questions

Is your business suitable for franchising?

Why franchise if you have enough capital to open an outlet on your own?

Is your current management team ready to support a franchise structure?

Are your operations and processes well documented?

Is your business easy to replicate or knock off?

How well protected is your brand and IP?

2.) Be picky

Just like dating and marriage, you should be extremely careful when it comes to choosing a franchisee. You

are after all, doing this to expand intelligently. Franchisees will be representing your brand and thus, have

the ability to destroy your reputation that took years to build up. Set up an interviewing process to weed out

the unsuitable ones and don’t be afraid to take the time to find the right match. It is well worth your time and

effort to ensure that the franchisee is an excellent fit so that both of you will prosper and be successful.

3.) How easy is it to replicate your system for success?

This was mentioned briefly in the interview with Asian Entrepreneur but I shall elaborate here. You should

take a step back and evaluate your business and its processes. Then, put yourself into potential

franchisees shoes and think about how easy it is for them to emulate your system for success. This is an

important factor that both sides do not normally consider but really should. Franchisors should keep in

mind that they are not merely selling their brand, product or service to entrepreneurs, they are selling their

system for success.

4.) Protect your brand and IP (Intellectual Property)

Franchising provides franchisees with access to your brand and IP which is your most valuable asset.

Your brand is your culture, beliefs, mission and how customers perceive you. This can be a big risk

because as mentioned before, a bad franchisee can tank your reputation and destroy the brand that you

have spent years building. Guidelines on brand usage should be clear, unambiguous and your approval

needed for any usage not covered under the guidelines.

5.) Location, location and location

Location in Singapore is important. Absurdly important. As a country, Singapore is great for setting up a

new business because the process is simple, efficient and swift, taking as little as one day to incorporate

a new company. Deciding on your location within Singapore is crucial. Ponder about whether your

business would suit the heart of the business district like the CBD or, would a residential area like Jurong

allow your business to thrive? This factor alone can make or break the business so choose wisely.

Place, our participants had an enriching experience that helped veterans augment their knowledge and franchising capability and equipping the

rest with the knowledge and ability to fulfil their franchising ambition.

knowledge about what is involved, some may decide not to go into franchising at all while others may try to

push on ahead regardless of the risks.

The Fundamentals of Franchise Management is FLA Singapore’s flagship workshop conducted with the

purpose of introducing businesses to the multiple disciplines involved in franchising their business. This is

to help businesses to gain knowledge and to have crystal clear understanding about how to intelligently

and rapidly expand their business both locally and overseas.

with International Enterprise Singapore.

The event was specifically for SME’s

who often found difficulty in getting

banks to finance them.

The different types of financing and

which one was more suitable for their

business models was also imparted to

the business owners which led to a

lively debate and discussion.

Many SMEs who attended were not sure of

the type of financing that were available to

them and had the impression that their

business had to be entirely self-funded.

International Enterprise (IE) Singapore,

actually has several newly implemented

programs and schemes to help local

businesses expand beyond Singapore’s small

domestic economy.

This assistance comes in the form of double

tax deductions which now covers salaries of

Singaporeans stationed overseas to create

more skilled jobs for Singaporeans overseas.

The funding support for SMEs through IE

Singapore’s grant schemes has also been

raised from 50% to 70%. Lastly, there will be

a new tax incentive called the International

Growth Scheme to help larger businesses

expand overseas while being anchored in

Singapore

Franchising and licensing in the furniture industry (19th August 2015)

Held in their secluded headquarters in the

heart of Sungei Kadut, Singapore’s furniture

industrial centre, attendees received a wealth

of knowledge about franchising their

business, protecting their intellectual property

and unorthodox means of financing through

crowdfunding.

The latest crowd-financing campaign

ended at 105% oversubscription from

38 investors with $100,000 raised in

21 days at an interest rate of 14% p.a.

FT Consulting commanding the attention of the speakers

Andrew from FT Consulting gave a brief but

informative talk about steps businesses needed

to take in order to be ready to franchise. Most

of the attendees were businesses who were

interested to take the plunge into franchising

and Andrew found himself bombarded with

questions both during and after his talk.

had an excellent sharing about intellectual

property in Singapore.

They gave penetrating insights into trademark

registration specifically about how crowded it

has become. They also shared about how

important it is to protect your own trademark

and brand.

MoolahSense is a crowd funding platform in

Singapore that provides a unique and creative

method for companies to acquire financing.

Most banks aren’t built to take risks and

therefore, they will reject loans to SME’s as

they are a higher risk than established

companies. MoolahSense allows SMEs and

newer companies to acquire financing from
