Welcome

Founded in 1904, Flackwell Heath Golf club is one of the senior clubs in buckinghamshire, with only four local clubs older.

It is also one of the most familiar courses in this part of the country - familiar indeed, to thousands who do not even know its name yet pass by it every working day as they journey along the M40. Those who risk briefly taking their eyes off the road, may catch a glimpse of players making their way up the par-5 seventh or the handsome, short eighth.

Flackwell Heath boasts a challenging course, and a clubhouse full of historic information, a sociable environment and

something for everyone. For visitors, The Club always provides a warm and friendly welcome, whether you wish to book for a simple lunch or a round of golf for 4. For our golfing members, there are plenty of competitions and roll-ups for all ages and abilities. We also offer a variety of social functions for both golfers and social members alike.

We provide facilities that a golfer would expect at a well-established club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing, with a club fitting service tailored to your requirments. Our Professional Staff also offer expert tuition in their state-of-the-art swing room and on the outdoor practice areas, giving

visitors and members the opportunity to begin or continue work on their game.

About the Course

tree lined fairways and small, fast, undulating greens define a course that offers a challenge to the professional and amateur golfer alike. the course measures 6142 yards from the white tees, 5839 yards from the yellow tees and 5300 yards from the red tees.

Sloping fairways are a major character of the course and influence a number of the holes, making each challenging yet interesting. Flackwell Heath is renowned for its tough par 3’s, with the third hole particularly challenging. Only 133yards, if you walk off with par you will be happy.

The long and challenging par 5 seventh, considered by many to be our signature hole, is the toughest on our card. The fairway slopes from left to right and each shot requires strategic placement. The raised green and tricky pin positions require tremendous accuracy and control.

In the summer the ball runs quickly down the fairways, and the best results come from being straight, and having good imagination around the greens, rather than trying to overpower the golf course.

With a modern irrigation system and excellent drainage, the course is rarely closed, and in winter temporary greens are almost unheard of.

We take pride in both the year-round condition of our course and in the pace and subtlety of our greens. Our annual Pro-Am event is one of the best supported events in the region, due to the excellent presentation of the course and its organisation.

History

it was the death of John unit in 1902, which effectively set in motion a chain of events that led to the foundation of Flackwell Heath Golf club. He was the owner of Minchins Farm, set above the mills of the wye Valley and within the Flackwell Heath area of cherry orchards. Minchins Farm, Flackwell Heath, was purchased in 1902 by three High wycombe businessmen, James Peace (gentlemen`s outfitter), arthur clarke (solicitor) and thomas thurlow (architect).

It was James Peace that suggested the land should be let for the development of a golf course; however, this was not successful so the partners decided to

go ahead with the plans themselves. By 1904 a nine-hole course had been developed to the design of James Sherlock, the professional of the Oxford University Club. On the 25th October of that year the Wycombe and Bourne End Golf Club was inaugurated.

The task of planning the second nine holes was given to the Club’s first Professional, John Turner, and these came into play in the spring of 1907. Alterations have been made over the years, some on the advice of Harry Colt in the 1920’s and in 1964 two new holes were designed by the course architect F. W. Hawtree – the present 15th and 16th. There are now on-going improvements

taking place, as recommended by professional golfer and television commentator, Ken Brown.

In the same year as the course was extended, Mr. H. Dickinson offered cups for both a ladies` and a gentlemen’s competition with the proviso that the club should become known as the Flackwell Heath Golf Club. This was agreed and ratified at that year’s Annual General Meeting.

Although the Club was initially a proprietary club, it was very much member-managed from the outset until 1920. At that time the land and clubhouse were purchased by the

members, with the first meeting of directors being held on 20th March 1920. George Hedley became the first President and the Secretary, C. Humphrey Roberts, took on the job of Managing Director. It would not be until 1984 that Mrs Betty Rowland would be elected the first lady director.

In 1920, the Club also saw rise to the Artisans’ Golfing Society, although their Clubhouse was not built until 1926. At the 2004 AGM, it was resolved that our Artisans would become Associate Members. With regard to the course itself, the golf correspondent and Walker Cup

player, Bernard Darwin (grandson of the naturalist Charles Darwin) described the course in 1923 as being divided into two classes, level holes at the top and hilly ones on the lower slopes and stated that:“…one admirable feature they have in common, is that they all have beautiful greens. The turf is true and velvety, neither too fast nor too slow, and the greens are all gently undulating, never flat to the point of dullness, nor steep to that of unfairness”.

We are still justly proud of our greens today.

In 1937 an article in Golf Illustrated observed that, “Flackwell Heath must be

counted on the short side but to me that does not matter. I would sooner play an interesting short lay-out than one which relies on yardage for its importance”.


Take the Course Tour

Hole 1 - carrington If the sight of people watching from the clubhouse window holds no fear for you, the first drive is a gentle opener. A copse front left of the tee then a strategically placed bunker and more trouble await a pulled drive. A straight drive should leave a medium short iron approach to a generous, receptive green guarded at the front by two bunkers. The green slopes back to front.

Hole 2 - Gorse A tough drive from the back tee which favours a fade to avoid a kick from the right to left sloping fairway. Anything missing the fairway will find you in the trees, which rarely gives you a shot. There is a narrow entrance to the green, well-guarded by two front bunkers. Once found, the green has gentle slopes.

Hole 3 - Punch bowl A pretty hole that can have a sting in its tail. The long green, sloping severely from back to front, makes club selection all important. The safe shot is to the left side of the green as the slopes usually give a kind bounce, but not if pulled too far left. Right is to be avoided, with slopes leading rapidly to trees and bushes.


Hole 4 - Spion kop A tempting drive across the valley for big hitters to go at the green but much rough awaits an errant drive. A safe drive onto the upslope of the fairway will leave a short iron, uphill approach. Club selection is crucial to avoid the front bunkers or a shot that skips through the back of the green. The slope of the green is from back to front making the putting tricky.

Hole 5 - world’s end Standing on the tee, the hole lies well below you, the view is excellent and a well struck blow is essential to make this par 3 green. Rough hillocks and bunkers may stop the ball bouncing back from the right side of the natural slopes but left side will always bounce away from the green. The green when you get there is relatively flat.

Hole 6 - barley Mow The first of the so-called “Railway holes”, the railway was removed years ago, needs a well struck tee shot down the left side as the slope will sweep the ball down to the right. The second shot should also favour the left as the contours will take the ball to the right, but be careful, the bank on the left can hold your ball leaving a tough hanging lie. The green generally slopes from back to front, with a number of testing contours.

Hole 7 - Railway The second “Railway hole”, a long tough par 5 sloping left to right all the way. The first and second shots should be kept left to use the slopes. The safer approach to the elevated green should also favour the left. The left to right sloping green takes skill to judge line and length.

Hole 8 - eagles Nest The uphill par 3 is daunting target to hit from the back tee. Anything left will need luck to be playable but the bail out right has enough bushes and trees to be feared. An ideal shot is right side of the green where the bounce will be helpful. One of the toughest greens, sloping right to left and off the front. A 3 here is always welcome.

Hole 9 - Plantation A tee shot to the right side is ideal as the slope right to left will sweep the ball towards the left rough. An uphill second, with the ball a little above your feet, to a generous green. Club selection is important to this gently sloping green.


Hole 10 - twins The back tee here with its corridor of trees to contend with can put fear into the heart of slicers. A well struck drive avoiding the right side and its slopes is required to set up the approach to this green which is well guarded at the front by bunkers left and right. The wind can often play a role in the club selection into this subtly contoured green.

Hole 11 - chalk Pit The long hitters can have a go at clearing the pit on the right to leave a level, visible short-iron approach. The alternative is to lay up short of the pit avoiding the risk, leaving a longer, blind uphill approach. Apart from the front, the green is quite flat.

Hole 12 - clubhouse This par 3 is a natural amphitheatre for the clubhouse and surrounds. Three bunkers surround the green to catch anything offline. Judgement of the distance is essential and the wind can play its part here. The green slopes from back to front. The path beyond the first tee, to the rear of the green, is out of bounds.

Hole 13 - Minchins Miss the fairway on either side and you will be blocked from going directly for the green with your second. From the fairway the approach shot is straightforward but the green has humps and hollows surrounding it that catch anything offline. The green slopes from back to front.

Hole 14 - big Slam The 14th is the shortest par 5 on the course. With tall trees down the left hand side of the fairway and the boundary of the course on right, an accurate tee shot is essential. A long drive down the left of the fairway will give the bigger hitters the opportunity to reach the green in two. The green is guarded by two bunkers that will gather any poor approach. If laying up, play to the left hand side of the fairway to avoid the bunker opposite. The green slopes from front to back.

Hole 15 - Juniper The fairway is generous on this slight dog-leg left but a well struck drive is essential if the green is to be attempted in two. The second shot over the valley to the raised green must be judged well for both direction and length. The green is guarded by a front left bunker and out of bounds to the right. The green slopes from back to front and off the right making putting a tough test. Take any 4 and run!


Hole 16 - Home turn The run home starts here with a short par 4. A cleverly positioned fairway bunker and a slope leading to bushes can catch any tee shot down the right, making the left half favourable off the tee. Just a short-iron approach, but three bunkers surround this green making it a small target. The green is bowl shaped giving some testing putts. A real birdie opportunity.

Hole 17 - Hard to Find Only the longest hitters can reach the green in two on this good par 5. A generous fairway to hit but trees await either side to catch those offline. A safe second, avoiding the two fairway bunkers, should set up a comfortable approach shot. Two bunkers front side of the green make this a narrow entrance and can catch a weak approach as easily as catching the big hitters’ second. The green slopes from right to left.

Hole 18 - Hedley The final drive must first clear the humps to make the fairway. The inevitable trees left and right make accuracy crucial in order to leave a straightforward approach. Correct club selection into this generous green is required. Anything long can disappear out of bounds into the car park. The green slopes off the front and back left.

At Flackwell Heath Golf Club we have a state-of-the-art swing studio with video analysis software – you can compare your technique to some of the best players in the world! The swing room is also equipped with a Flightscope ball-tracking device which allows you to see club face angles and ball speed, to name just a few of its capabilities. It is a fantastic piece of equipment and helps us to understand what your club does and how we can progress with you.

We are particularly keen in encouraging younger players and provide plenty of opportunity for them to learn and improve their golf skills. Every Saturday afternoon we have a series of children’s coaching sessions for the local community, tri-golf sessions for those aged 5-8years and then progression into sessions with normal clubs for those 8-16years.

Lessons are available in our swing studio, on the course or on one of our outdoor practice areas.

Practice Facilities

Flackwell Heath has a variety of practice facilities that are designed to help improve your game.

The Swing Studio is a dedicated tuition and practice facility aimed at providing members and visitors with a high-tech practice experience using Flightscope ball- tracking devise. This provides you with information such as swing speed, club face angle, launch angles and much more. The studio is also equipped with video analysis software that provides you with visual feedback and you can be compared with some of the world’s leading golfers.

We have two large grass practice tees running alongside to our 11th hole which is only a short walk from the clubhouse, enabling you to practice driving, fairway woods and iron play.

A chipping and pitching area situated next to the main car park is ideal for the golfer looking to perfect those saving shots around the greens. There is also a bunker situated next to the green to practice your sand saves.

There are 3 practice nets 50yards away from the first tee - ideal for a couple of swings before your round.

Finally, our last outdoor practice area is the putting green. Situated next to the clubhouse, it gives you the perfect opportunity to practice and get used to the fast and true greens here at Flackwell Heath.

Becoming a Member

Flackwell Heath Golf club offers a wide variety of memberships to appeal to all ages and standards.

Our most popular option is full seven-day individual membership, which is quite simply as it says, access to the course, clubhouse and its facilities seven days a week. We also offer five day individual membership where members can play Monday – Friday throughout the year (except Bank Holidays) with full use of the clubhouse and its facilities. There are also discounted memberships available for those who live overseas (absent from the country for a period of six months or more & must own a property abroad) or + 50 miles from the Club.

Our attractively priced Colt, Student and Intermediate categories welcome ages 18-35 and support those entering or leaving education or commencing full-time work. We also encourage and welcome children with a passion for golf, with our Cygnet and Junior memberships, available for children aged 5-17.

Official handicaps are required to enter competitions, however, if you do not have a handicap – don’t worry. We have plenty of willing members in our friendly roll-ups who will be able to help you submit three cards for this purpose.

We also offer social membership for non-golfers who wish to take full advantage of our clubhouse and benefits. Flackwell Heath has a wide range of functions throughout the year, including our popular Sunday Lunches with Music, Quiz Nights and Themed Evenings.


A strong Bridge Section features at the Club too. Flackwell Heath has successful ladies Bridge teams and a popular mixed Golf/Bridge team. A Duplicate Bridge night also takes place once a month for members and there is plenty of opportunity to learn.

The Club boasts good facilities, ample parking, practice facilities and excellent bar food and drink. All members are entitled to a 5% discount on food and 15% discount on drinks.

Membership for playing members is not automatic and all applicants have to go through an informal process, as is normal for most Private Members Clubs. This gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

If you have not played here before, why not contact the office or the Club Professional to arrange a round at an introductory rate. Our greens are widely recognised as some of the best in the County, and you may be pleasantly surprised by the rest of the course as well!

Members’ Golf

whether you are a competitive or social golfer, there is always plenty of time available to play to suit your personal requirement. Flackwell Heath offers extensive competitions, providing opportunities to achieve and improve a handicap, enjoy the company of members from this and other clubs, or just play socially with friends.

Flackwell Heath operates an informal tee booking system and encourages social golf where possible. Tee times are only in place for competitions, matches and society bookings, otherwise members can simply turn up and play the course at any time.

Entering a competition is simple and allows you to choose a time to suit you and play with members of all different standards. When competitions are not taking place, we have the roll ups which take place almost every day. Members meet approximately half an hour before their arranged group time and these are open to all members. These are an ideal way for new members to meet others and integrate into the Club.

Members’ Golf (continued)

MenThe Men’s Section at Flackwell Heath is extremely active, with regular individual and pairs competitions and knockouts throughout the year, and long standing matches with local Clubs from March-October. We also have our infamous home and away matches with the Club’s Artisan Section. As with the Ladies Section also, there are a number of events throughout the year for the members to enjoy. These include Captain’s Day and President’s Day and are always followed by a dinner dance with partners in the evening.

The Club offers three different teams to its male members; The Scratch Team - part of the Inter County Scratch League, and the Club Team play weekends, with the Midweek Team playing during the week. Away matches provide a low-cost way to play other courses, make new friends in the local area and, most importantly, the opportunity for you to represent the Club.

The Club is also represented in county competitions, participating in the Hillman Trophy, Champion Club, Club Foursomes Scratch and Club Foursomes Handicap.

Our Seniors Section welcomes all gentlemen over the age of 55. With regular midweek matches against other local clubs from April - September and monthly fun or competitive competitions this section also manages to meet frequently for roll-ups. The Seniors are a friendly group and readily welcome new members.

ladiesAnother busy section within the Club, the Ladies meet for an organised competition every Tuesday. There are also regular competitions for ‘Business Ladies’, with reserved tee times most Saturday mornings.

The Ladies participate in matches with other clubs both friendly and competitively from March to October and also enter county leagues over the summer and winter months. Like the men, getting involved in playing for the teams provide a great opportunity to experience other courses, meet other people and represent your Club.

The calendar is composed of regular stableford, medal and trophy competitions, as well as fun meetings and knockouts. July plays host to fun-themed Lady Captain’s Day with a meal in the evening and also an Invitation Day where ladies welcome guests from other clubs for a fun competition and meal afterwards.

The Senior Ladies Section (60years+) must not be forgotten, with their own matches and regular Thursday roll-up.

MixedThe Mixed Section meets for a fun competition every bank holiday Monday throughout the main golfing season and also for their Winter Texas Scramble competition at Christmas. Between April and September once a month on a Thursday, members meet for 12 holes of mixed greensomes. This is a sociable evening with a bite to eat afterwards. The section also has an active team, regularly playing against other clubs, and offers several trophy competitions during the year.

JuniorsFlackwell Heath welcomes juniors of all standards and thoroughly encourages boys and girls to utilise the Club and its facilities in order to achieve a love of golf. With the support of our professional staff and volunteers, we provide all juniors with a safe environment and positive experience every time they visit the Club.

We accept children from 5 years old into our Cygnets Section. Cygnets must be accompanied by an adult who is a member of the Club at all times. Group coaching lessons are also provided as part of the Cygnet membership.

Junior members are accepted between the ages of 12-17. As part of their membership, we offer group coaching lessons, regular competitions and use of the course and its facilities.

Flackwell Heath has recently seen the introduction of its ‘green tees’, specifically set up at the front of each fairway for Cygnet and Junior golfers who are new to the game and not quite capable of hitting from the tee boxes.

Academy Membership

this category of membership is to encourage new golfers, those returning to golf from a long break and nomadic golfers without an official handicap, who are looking to improve their game and eventually join Flackwell Heath as a Full or 5 Day member. academy membership can be taken up at any time for a 12-month period.

When joining as an Academy member you will initially be assessed by the Head Professional and shown all the benefits and features of the Academy and given the opportunity to discuss how to make the most of becoming an Academy member.

The other key features of the Academy membership are PGA Professional coaching once a month (1 initial assessment, 6 individual lessons, 4 group lessons and a final assessment on the course), unlimited access to the course at the discretion of the professional from Monday to Fridays and Sunday afternoons, with the exception of Bank Holidays, and full use of the clubhouse facilities and practice areas.

The Academy membership is an excellent way of integrating you into golf club membership whilst being taught how to play and learn about the rules and etiquette of golf.

Flackwell Heath boasts two function rooms. Firstly our Joe Smith Boardroom, named after a Past President of the Club, this room is ideal for intimate, private gatherings. Our Boardroom can sit twelve people comfortably around our

grand boardroom table or up to thirty people in a table layout to suit you.

Secondly, the Club offers a restaurant area/large function room with a private bar, boasting great views across the golf course. We can accommodate up to 120 people in our restaurant for a sit-down meal and 180 people standing, with limited seating, for a buffet. This room also has the flexibility of being divided into two areas, creating another light intimate area for smaller gatherings. Our room hire charges vary according to numbers and the type of event that is being held. Catering options are adaptable and we can offer anything from finger buffets to a specially catered for meal.

We are more than willing to assist you in the organisation of your event, with help from providing the right entertainment for the night, to arranging colour-coordinated napkins, balloons or flowers. Open Competitions

Flackwell Heath Golf club likes to provide golfers of all ages the opportunity to come and play its wonderful course.

We have six open competitions that run throughout the year, with a warm welcome on arrival, a fun and friendly competition followed by a meal afterwards; every participant is guaranteed a thoroughly enjoyable day.

To start the season we have our Men’s Open Competition held in May, moving on to June when we host our Ladies Open. The Ladies Open was introduced in 2010 and is increasing in support every year - it is one of the many highlights in our golfing calendar.

August presents our popular Senior Men’s (Over 55’s) Open, followed by our unique Parent & Child Open (playing for the Fox Salver) and then our Mixed Open, all of which are pairs competitions. Finally in August we have our Junior Open which is an individual medal round and is a qualifier for the National Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Competition.

Events may vary slightly throughout the year, however up-to-date information is available on the Club’s website, www.fhgc.co.uk, together with application forms should you wish to enter. Forms are also available from the office.

Green Fee Visitors are welcome anytime on weekdays and Sunday afternoons. Handicap certificates are not mandatory at Flackwell Heath, however we do prefer golfers to be of a good enough standard to play the course, so that you, and those around you, can enjoy your round without delay.

A well-stocked professional shop will be open on your arrival where you can purchase consumables and browse the clothing and golf equipment. Golf trollies, electric and pull, and buggies are available to hire. For keen golfers, and by prior arrangement, lessons are also available before you play.

Visitor green fee rates are available from our website, www.fhgc.co.uk as well as our dress code regulations, which we would appreciate you reading to ensure your visit with us runs smoothly. Flackwell Heath has implemented a dress code for visitors on the course and in the clubhouse and requires a smart casual standard of dress at all times.

Our clubhouse also welcomes visitors for a formal lunch or informal bite to eat. Whether you have played golf or not, our comfortable bar, lounge or restaurant areas await you. In the height of summer we also have our patio area which overlooks our putting area – fantastic on a sunny day. Our bar boasts a wide

selection of wines, spirits and beers, including guest bitters, and offers a wide selection of bar snacks. Our bar, lounge and restaurant areas offer you the chance to watch golfers tackle the first or twelfth holes whilst you relax and enjoy your time with us.

How to Find Us

APPROACHING FROM THE WEST (OXFORD):Leave M40 at junction 4 signposted High Wycombe (A40). At end of slip road take third exit off roundabout – A404 / Marlow Hill. At next roundabout take second exit - A404 / Marlow Hill. On dual carriageway (going downhill) bear to right, and after “U Turn” lane, take right hand filter lane (with traffic lights), and turn right across dual carriageway onto Daws Hill Lane, signposted to Flackwell Heath. Continue on Daws Hill Lane crossing over M40. Continue into Heath End Road. At mini-roundabout go straight onto the Straight Bit. After the Community Centre (on left) turn left into Common Road, past the post office (on right) and Barclays Bank

(on left). This road filters into Treadaway Road. The visitor’s entrance is a few hundred yards on the right.

Note: at Junction 3 of the M40 there is no exit from the North or entrance towards the North.

APPROACHING FROM THE EAST (LONDON):Leave M40 at junction 3, signposted High Wycombe (A40). At end of slip road take first exit off roundabout (A4094).At mini-roundabout take second exit into Boundary Road. At next mini-roundabout turn left into Treadaway Hill, up the hill and under the M40 Motorway. As you approach the top of the hill turn

left into Treadaway Road. The visitor’s entrance is two hundred yards on the left.

The nearest railway stations are High Wycombe or Beaconsfield (both approximately 4 miles).
