ENW 333 Introduction This week’s English News Weekly podcast explores a decision by the British government to impose a tax on all drinks being sold in the UK. The idea behind the new tax was after the UK became concerned about an increase in child obesity levels. The new tax has been imposed on any drink that contains sugar, with the hope that the increased price will reduce youngsters drinking sodas in particular. What are the ramifications? Has the decision been universally welcomed?
English News Weekly will try to explain all…

333 Sugar Tax to Tackle Obesity 1
From this month the UK has joined other countries such as France, Norway, UAE and Sri Lanka in imposing a 1: salt/sugar/fat tax on drinks. From April 2018 any drink sold in the UK with more than 8g of sugar per 100ml will have a 24p tax imposed. For drinks with 5g of sugar the tax levy is 18p whilst any drink under 5g has no extra tax. The proposal was first introduced by former UK Prime Minister David Cameron in 2: 1996/2006/2016 with the hope of reducing child obesity levels.
2
The new sugar tax comes on the back of news that the UK now has the highest levels of obesity in 3: Western/Eastern/Central Europe. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) annual report on health around the world found that 26.95% of Britons had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above. The report also named and shamed 4: four/five/six other countries with rising obesity problems; the USA, Hungary, New Zealand and Mexico.
3
The OECD’s Health-at-a-Glance report was damning for Western European countries as it showed that obesity levels were up across the 5: continent/region/landmass. However it was the UK which has the most to worry as the report indicated that obesity levels had grown by a staggering 92% since 1990. This rising level of child obesity in particular was the main catalyst for the new sugar tax, or the 6: Fizzy/Sweet/Soft Drinks Industry Levy to give it is full name.
4 The country with the highest levels of obesity in Europe was Hungary which had levels of 28.5% of people with a higher BMI of 30. Perhaps surprisingly the country with the lowest levels in Europe was Romania with just 7.9% of the population recorded as 7: obese/fat/overweight. Next was Italy with 10.3%, the Netherlands with 11.4% and Bulgaria with 11.5%. The location with the highest percentage of BMI in the world was American Samoa, a group of islands in the 8: Pacific/Atlatntic/Indian Ocean. The OECD report showed that an incredible 74.6% of the population was overweight.
5 In response to the UK’s decision to impose the sugar tax, companies have already reduced sugar levels in their drinks. The biggest selling soda brand in the world, 9: Coca-Cola/Pepsi/Dr Pepper, announced the introduction of three new sugar-reduced drinks in the UK to try to beat the new sugar tax. It is the first time in history that the company has released three new products at the same time said Coca-Cola UK boss Jon Woods. He admitted to the Daily Telegraph 10: website/newspaper/TV station, “This is a sign of things to come.”
