  • IT IS APPLIED IN THE FOLLOWINGBRANCHES OF INDUSTRY

    PURPOSE UD3�71 flaw detector is an ultrasonic gener�al�purpose flaw detector which is intended for:• manual non�destructive testing of products

    for detection of defects such as discontinu�ity and inhomogeneity of material in rawstock, finished items, in�process goods, wel�ded, soldered, bolt, riveted and other joints;

    • measurement of defects depth and depthcoordinates;

    • measurement of various items thickness atone�way access to them;

    • measurement of signals (reflected fromdefects) amplitudes ratio;

    • measurement of equivalent defects dimen�sions;

    • assessment of sound velocity in sundrymaterials.Flaw detector is able to test materials and

    products with sound velocity from 1500 m/s to12 000 m/s.

    UD3�71 ultrasonic flaw detector providesthe testing of weld joints and base materials, andalso thickness measurement of monometals,bimetals in correspondence with the regulatorydocuments requirements in various industrialsectors.

    UD3�71 FLAW DETECTOR ADVANTAGES

    bodies and water penetration corresponds toIР65; flaw detector is also resistant to ionizingradiation impact and is meant for operation inincreased humidity conditions.

    DAC mode is an alternative to TCG mode andenables to plot the curve which connects points (cor�responding to signals peaks) on the screen, and alsoto plot up to 2 additional curves which is the presetvalue dB distant from the base one. DAC mode alsoallows quick and convenient TCG curve plotting.

    • "REFLECTIONS MARKING" MODE

    • DAC AMPLITUDE CURVES MODE

    THREE GOING�OFF LEVELS: "ACCEPTANCE"; "REGISTRATION"; "SEARCH" are marked on flaw detector screen in

    "RED", "BLUE" and "GREEN" color. The colors of lightALARM by every gate correspond to them. Applicationof three�level gates makes it possible to estimate therisk of detected defects.

    • the sound alarm going�off level is set up byan operator by a specific gate.• the mode (when the preset level is transcend�ed or not) is set up by an operator for every gateindependently.

    When using three�level gates it is possible to reg�

    ister echo�signals at different levels relative to the

    acceptance level. It will permit to record echo�signals

    from developing defects and monitor defects in the

    program of testing results viewing what is necessary

    for carrying out ultrasonic testing (UST) of important

    objects. Three�level gates as well as convenient sound

    and light defect alarm system allow to assess the

    detected discontinuity dimensions quickly and qualita�

    tively.

    TCG level is set up in the point grid connectedby linear sections, i.e. it is possible to set sundryTCG curve forms � piecewise�linear, step etc. TCGlevel corresponds to the signal attenuation in thegiven point relative to the set gain value. This optionallows to test long�length items and items madefrom materials with great attenuation, it is also usedfor sensitivity setup when testing weld joints with wallthickness of more than 12 mm.

    • SPECIAL PROGRAM INTERFACE MODE

    This mode is applied for solving special�purpose

    tasks. For example, when testing various single�type

    parts or when the part has many testing area. For

    solving this task "Special program interface" system is

    used in UD3�71. The necessary standard setups and

    program interface of "Special program interface" enter

    flaw detector from PC. The input setups are protected

    from illegal change by NDT inspector (operator).

    Mode of connection to PC is essential for datatransmission from the flaw detector memory to thecomputer memory and vice�versa. It is used for trans�mitting "А�scans" and "B�scans" to PC for reportscreation on the basis of testing results or databases.

    If required, the user can input setups for specific test�ing types in flaw detector from PC via in�built USBport what considerably reduces the time of flawdetector preparation for testing execution.

    • MODE OF CONNECTION TO PC

    • MEASUREMENT OF EQUIVALENTDEFECTS DIMENSIONS (DGS DIAGRAMS)

    "Peak" mode is indispensable during small

    defects search, operation in unstable acoustic cou�

    pling conditions. Upon that, the current signal value is

    displayed on the screen concurrently with the max.

    signal envelope of all observable echo�signals (dis�

    played in red color). This mode is applied for max.

    echo�signal amplitude determination and conditional

    length estimation. It can be used for testing results

    registration both for rejected and in�order items, what

    will confirm the presence or absence of defects

    throughout the whole scanning perimeter.

    Thus, "Peak" mode application increases results

    reliability and reduces testing time.

    • "PEAK" MODE

    UD3�71 flaw detector distinctive feature is the

    measurement of equivalent defects dimensions.

    Using DGS diagrams UD3�71 flaw detector enab�

    les to measure equivalent defects dimensions in the

    range from 0,8 to 20,0 mm (equivalent defect diame�

    ter) with relevant error which does not exceed 15 %.

    Availability of the algorithm (built in flaw detector

    software) of automatic plotting of DGS diagrams for

    various probes types makes it possible to analyze the

    received data quickly and qualitatively and determine

    equivalent dimensions of the detected discontinuities

    with their further registration. To save the time which

    is used for the instruments setup, UD3�71 instrument

    software contains the function of automatic TCG curve

    plotting by DGS diagram plotted for a specific probe.

  • EXAMPLES OF THE FLAW DETECTORAPPLICATION IN THE AIRCRAFTINDUSTRY

    When carrying out routine maintenance of the

    fastener assemblies of undercarriage suspension of

    BOEING�737 aircraft, ultrasonic testing of parts is

    performed from the cylindrical surface with a special�

    purpose probe, which comprises several wedges with

    different refracted angles of transverse ultrasonic

    waves in the part under inspection, and a special�

    purpose small�sized probe with frequency of 5 MHz.

    Ultrasonic testing of the blades of "AВ" propel�

    lers for detection of surface and subsurface defects,

    such as fatigue cracks, mechanical damages, non�

    metallics and corrosion damages, is performed with

    the usage of P121�1,25�90�003(004) and P121�1,8�

    90�003(004) contact single crystal probes of surface

    wave having frequencies of 1,8 MHz and 1,25 MHz

    and wedge angles of 600 and 630, respectively. The

    whole screw surface is inspected in several stages by

    the areas ≈ 400 mm.

    Ultrasonic testing of the studs of "АB" and "CB"

    products bodies in operation during motor�bench

    tests and repair can be carried out without disman�

    tling of studs from the products.

    P111�5�К6�ММ�003(004) special�purpose

    small�sized ultrasonic contact probe was specially

    developed and produced for this purpose. An addi�

    tional bracket�holder of the probe allows the probe

    placement on the testing surface of studs without

    removing terminal caps, what enables the manhours

    reduction during routine maintenance.

    Ensounding of studs metal is performed with

    longitudinal ultrasonic waves. The equipment is set

    up using the enterprise calibration block made from

    18Х2Н4ВА grade steel. The block has testing reflec�

    tors of 1,0 mm, imitating the cracks located at vari�

    ous depth.

    • TESTING OF THE WALL THICKNESSOF HOLLOW COOLING BLADES:

    The testing of one of the most crucial elementsof the engine (stator and rotor blades of gas turbine)is the task of the increase of reliability and lifetime ofgas�turbine engines. They should survive high tem�perature for many hours without loosing its mechan�ical strength. First of all, it concerns the turbineblades they receive the flow of burning hot gases,heated to the temperature of more than 1600?K. Thecooling hollow of irregular shape is created for theblade to be operated under such conditions. The taskof wall thickness testing of hollow cooling bladesbecomes particularly urgent. P112�10�2?3�004 spe�cial probes with frequency of 10 МHz were developedfor this purpose, allowing the testing of wall thicknesson 1,5?6 mm blade area. At the same time, the wallthickness can be inspected from 0,6 mm to 4 mmboth from convex, and concave surfaces.
