Pastoral Minister In our Gospel passage from Mark this weekend, we are presented with a dramatic and powerful encounter between Bartimaeus and Jesus. Bartimaeus is the only person in the Gospel of Mark who calls Jesus by name. As Jesus enters Jerusalem, Bartimaeus senses clearly in his spirit that Jesus is passing by. The crowd of people rebuke Bartimaeus and demand that he keeps quiet, as he is a disabled and socially isolated member of society. But even after being told to remain silent and unseen, Bartimaeus calls out with even greater intensity to Jesus, “Son of David, have pity on me!” (Mk 10:47) This is significant as it is the first time the title ‘Son of David’ has been applied to Jesus. This title points to Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises to His people, as the Messiah-King who would rule over Israel. It is the first time that Jesus allows a public proclamation of his Messianic identity. Up until this point it has been kept a secret, but as Jesus enters more deeply into the fulfillment of his suffering messianic mission, the time has come for it to be revealed.
Bartimaeus is not intimidated amid the crowd, as he faces a tough obstacle. He cries out with abandon to Jesus, whose presence he recognizes even more clearly than the apostles and crowd do. He knows that the surpassing healing and miraculous power that Jesus possesses with divine authority can truly change his life and circumstances. Bartimaeus has absolute faith that God can deliver and heal him through Jesus. He immediately springs up and responds with decisive faith to the call of Jesus. Jesus directly responds to his faith when he replies to Bartimaeus “Go your way, your faith has saved you.” (Mk 10:52) Bartimaeus responds with exuberance to the command of Jesus by throwing off his cloak, which symbolizes him leaving his old way of life, and begins to follow Jesus. His response reflects the heart of one who has been healed and restored by the miraculous power of God.
When you are faced with overwhelming conditions or challenges in your life do you cry out with full abandon to Jesus, believing with faith that He can answer your prayer? Imagine you are the blind man at the side of the road and Jesus is passing you by. What would you ask Him to do for you? What are you really longing for deep within your heart? I encourage you to take time in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the desires of your heart and the courage to cry out to Jesus. Whether it is for healing, mercy, a renewal of your faith, knowledge of the plans God has for your life or for your eyes to be opened anew to recognize

Mercy in Action UpdateThank you to all who supported the Mercy in Action Event! Christian Service and Religious Education teamed up to make 110 children’s comfort kits to comfort children who are ill or removed from their home. Thank you to Stacey and the Religious Formation teachers for sharing in this project! This year the project was divided into three phases. Our Crafter’s made the shells for 110 stuffed animals. We could not have done this without you. Our Religious Formation students stuffed the animals and made cards for the children. Our parishioners donated books and volunteers came to compile the comfort kits. A BIG thank you to all!!! Our parish is truly a community wanting to serve. I am so blessed to work with you. It was beautiful to see everyone come together to perform this act of service and mercy for our local community!
Turkey Sign-UpWe are hoping to distribute Thanksgiving dinners to our pantry clients again this year. They appreciate your generosity! We will have a sign up for turkey donations on
the weekend of October 27th and 28th. If you would like to donate a turkey, please stop by the sign-up table in the Gathering Space. Turkeys need to be brought in by Thursday, November 8. Thank you for your help to those in need.

St. CyprianTuition Assistance ProgramWe are now accepting requests for Catholic elementary school tuition assistance for the 2018/19 school year. The awards will be in the amount of $300 per child. Awards will be paid directly to the school upon verification of enrollment and parishioner status as of October 1st annually.
To qualify for a 2018/19 award, you must have been a registered parishioner at St. Cyprian Parish as of April 1, 2018. The definition of “good standing” will be determined by the Pastor or his delegate, but will focus on a parishioner’s commitment to the concepts of good stewardship of time, talent and treasure.

Stewardship Thoughts Today, Jesus professes in St. Mark’s Gospel, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah and the Letter to the Hebrews also indicate examples of Christ’s humility for us to model. In other words, glory in God’s Kingdom is not achieved through high status or rank, like the secular world proclaims, but through being a humble servant to all. This includes service to the poor among us. In a spirit of evangelization, expressed through stewardship, we strive to offer our time, talent, and treasure in thanksgiving to God to our parish and other worthy causes. Every parish community is always in need of readers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Parish Pastoral Council members, Finance Council members, Evangelization and Stewardship Committee members, and school volunteers, to name a few ways to in which we can serve God through the Church. God graces everyone with at least one unique gift to use to build up the Kingdom that no one else can do. To discover your gifts, attend a Called and Gifted seminar in your area.
