WELCOME TO CALTHORPE PARK

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Fleet Town is an unincorporated association, managed by a committee, currently comprising of the following individuals: Alec Grant, Richard Whittington, Harry Cannon, Darren Edwards, Sam Waters and Nathan Cookson.

Good afternoon and welcome to Calthorpe Park the home of Fleet Town F.C. for today’s Evo-Stik League South Division 1 South fixture. In particular the Committee, Players, Management and supporters of our visitors Street who have travelled up from Somerset. Our Boxing Day fixture against Thatcham Town attracted our best home attendance of the season which was really pleasing. However the manner of our second successive 2-1 defeat of The Christmas Holiday was certainly not at all pleasing. Again we played very well and dictated nearly all the match but somehow ended up trying to save the game with only 9 players on the pitch. Unfortunately, at this level young teams like us who try to play football are continually being disadvantaged by naïve officials who are bullied in to handing out Red and Yellow cards for innocuous challenges by experienced ex-pros who do it as part of their game. Very disappointing and not at all in the spirit of Christmas ! Anyway enough said its now on to today’s game against Street. They have just come up to play in the Southern League for the first time in their long history having spent over 50 of their previous years in The Western League. They have made an excellent start as well and currently lie in 7th place with 28 points from the 17 games they have played. Street will present a tough test for us but one we will be really up for as we try to end the bad spell we are currently on. As today is our last home match of the year we would like to really thank our supporters especially ‘The Fleet Massiv’ who have been absolutely fantastic and stuck with us throughout what has been a fairly difficult one at times. You are all very much appreciated. Let’s hope 2019 will be a better one ! Happy New Year to you all and hopefully we will see all our home supporters back here next Saturday for the home league game against Highworth Town. ‘Come on you Blues ‘

A Brief History of Street F.C.

Founded in 1880, Street Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in Somerset and was christened with the nickname “The Cobblers” due to a large shoe making history in the area. The club’s early years were fairly successful, winning the Somerset Senior League on four occasions before the end of the century, the first time being the 1882/83 season. The club also had early success in the Somerset Senior Cup as they lifted the trophy in 1898 and again 2 years later. After winning the Somerset Senior League again in 1909/10, and the Somerset Senior Cup the following year, the club made the decision to join the Western League.

With the Western League being put on hold in 1914 due to WW1, Street re-joined the league at the start of season 1919/20 in division 2. Unfortunately, the division was disbanded three years later so the club rejoined the Somerset Senior League, where they remained for the next eight years before re-joining the Western League for the 1930/31 season. The first season back in division 2 was none too successful, finishing 16th out of 17, but two years later Street were runners-up to Swindon Town Reserves - a feat they repeated in 1938 when finishing 2nd behind Weymouth - but in those days there was no automatic promotion from division 2 into division 1.

The following season the club had its finest hour by reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup away at Football League 3rd division south Ipswich Town, but sadly lost 7-0. After WW2 Street returned to the Western League 1st division and in season 1947/48 had a memorable campaign ending 3rd in the league and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the second time - after knocking out Yeovil Town 2-1 in front of a crowd of 5000 at the Victoria Field - where they were beaten 5-0 by Cheltenham Town.

The 1952/53 season saw the club finish runners-up in division 1, losing out to Barnstaple Town who had a 0.01 better goal average after the sides had finished level on 44 points. The club then went through a lean spell and was relegated to division 2 in 1955 and then re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960 when the Western League division 2 was again disbanded.

In the mid 1960’s the introduction of Tommy Wilson as manager saw the club’s fortunes rise again. At the same time, they left the Victoria Field and moved to the Turnpike Ground where they were crowned Somerset Senior League champions in 1964 - and again in 1966. In 1967 Street FC moved to their present home, the Tannery Ground, but times were lean and by 1992 they had dropped to division 3.

The appointment of Noel O’Hare as manager in 1993 saw an upturn in fortunes and successive promotions came in his first 2 seasons. At the end of the 1994/95 season Noel left and Simon White was appointed. Simon left after only 11 games of the season, but the club went on to gain promotion again and reached the final of the League Cup under the guidance of Ken Randall.

The following season Simon White returned and led the club to the Somerset Senior League championship title for a record 8th time - and back into the Western League after a 37-year absence. The following season flood-lights and a seated stand were both erected and the changing rooms were enlarged.

After guiding the club to 4th place and 3rd place finishes in the first two seasons, Simon again left the club mid-way through the 1999-2000 campaign. Neil Seymour and Julian Thresher took over the reins, followed by Gerry Pearson and then Alan Hooker, until Simon White was re-appointed at the start of the 2005/06 season and led the club to promotion to the Western League Premier Division at the first attempt.

Dan Badman took over in 2011/12 and the following season the team finishing 6th; and went one better in 2013/14 finishing 5th. Season 2015/16 saw the team finish 7th in the league and reach the last four of the Somerset Premier Cup, but at the end of the season Dan stepped down due to work commitments. The committee moved swiftly and appointed ex-Bitton, Bridgwater Town and Paulton Rovers manager Richard Fey to take over and season 2016/17 saw his side challenging all the way for the title with Bristol Manor Farm. In the end, however, the club had to settle for the runners-up spot for only the second time in the club’s history.

The 2017/18 campaign was the Club’s 50th season in the Western League - and was a truly momentous one too! Early results were a little indifferent, but starting on 12th September 2017, Richard Fey’s charges completed a sensational run of 26 consecutive league victories that eventually saw the team win the title by fifteen points (falling just one point short of the century) after winning 32 out of their 38 games and scoring 100 goals, thus earning a place in the Southern League for the first time in the Club’s history.

STREET F.C. PLAYER PROFILES

Tom Punchard (GK): Punchy is an experienced goalkeeper who has been with the club for over a decade. He’s vocal, commanding and, despite being well into his 30s, is one of the best shot-stoppers in the area.

Liam Kingston (GK): An extremely promising young goalkeeper signed from Weston Super Mare at the end of November 2018. He played in the Southern League for Bridgwater Town during season 2016/17, but more recently he has donned the gloves at Cheddar and

Shepton Mallet in the Western League.

Ben Amghar (DF): Captain and a club stalwart for many years, A commanding centre back who reads the game well and is a robust, no-nonsense tackler.

Josh Bennett (DF): Josh is a young defender who usually fills the right back role but can play anywhere across the back line. He joined during the 2016/17 campaign from Southern League Mangotsfield United.

Ross McErlain (DF): Ross re-joined the club from Shepton Mallet in November 2016 but has played for several other local sides during his career. He can fill various roles and is an extremely valuable member of the squad.

George Morris-Edwards (DF): A young central defender signed at the end of November 2018 from Weston Super Mare where he has made a couple of National League South appearances. He also played for Shepton Mallet in the Western League for a spell during the

2017/18 season. Lewis Tasker (DF): Lewis joined at the start of the 2016/17 season from Willand Rovers, “Task” possesses a great left foot, loves a set

piece and over the years he has gained a wealth of experience with several clubs in the south west at various levels. Leigh Bailey (DF/MF): Leigh returned to the Tannery during the summer of 2018 from Western League side Bridport. A tough-

tackling, no-nonsense player who has also played for Bridgwater Town and Chard Town since his first spell with the club.

Lewis Hogg (DF/MF): Lewis played for Bristol Rovers 1999-2003 and scored 3 goals, including a League Cup equaliser at Goodison Park. He was also captain for a spell. He then played 216 games for Bath City in the Conference before joining Gloucester City. He moved to Mangotsfield Utd before joining Street in Oct 2017.

Lewis Waldy (DF/MF): An excellent prospect at left back or in midfield who joined from Taunton Town. He scored the vital goal that clinched the title last season.

Aidan Chainey (MF): Aidan played for the Cobblers a few seasons ago and since re-joining in the summer of 2017 from Gillingham

Town he has made a big impression at the Tannery. A quality midfielder with excellent tackling ability and superb vision. Matt Hurley (MF): Matt is an extremely influential and athletic central midfielder with vision and distribution to match. Earlier in his

career he had a short spell at former Southern League side Bridgwater Town. Oscar Latas (MF): Oscar joined the club in October 2018 from Western League side Bridport after being on manager Rich Fey’s radar

for a while. He’s an attack-minded midfielder who scores his fair share of goals.

Jamie Short (MF): A real quality player with plenty of experience at Southern League level who joined the club during the summer of 2018 from Tiverton Town. He has also played for Taunton Town.

Ed Butcher (MF/FW): Ed joined the Cobblers during the summer of 2018 from Bridport but has also played for Chard Town. He’s a fast winger and good crosser of the ball - who also scores goals.

Craig Herrod (MF/FW): A pacey midfielder / striker who loves to dribble, “Herraldo” is in his second spell with the Cobblers. In-between times he played in the Southern League for Taunton Town and Bideford.

Dave O’Hare (MF/FW): An attacking midfielder with several goals to his name in recent seasons. “Chin” re-joined Street from Paulton Rovers towards the end of season 2015/16, but he has also played for Richard Fey when they were both with Bridgwater Town.

Harry Foster (FW): “Drink” scored goals for fun in the reserves during the 2016/17 season - and he chipped in with a double-figure haul for the first team in 2017/18 as he became something of a ‘Super Sub’!

Steve Murray (FW): The only way one can categorise ‘Scouse’ is as a ‘Goal Machine’ who is a threat to any defence due to his lightning pace, superb control and slick finishing. He bagged 41 goals during the 2015/16 campaign - including finding the net in 15

consecutive games, and 66 during the following two seasons.

Phil Ormrod (FW): A proven goalscorer who returned to the club during the summer of 2018 following spells at Gillingham Town and Dorchester Town.

STREET F.C. MANAGEMENT PROFILES

Richard Fey (Manager): ‘The Boss’ has accumulated a wealth of experience both on

and off the pitch and has managed at both Southern League Premier and Division

One levels, before taking the reins here at Street FC during the summer of 2016. The

rest is history!

Nathan Rudge (Assistant Manager/DF): ‘Rudgey’ is an immensely strong and

physically commanding centre back who, among others, spent 10 years at Tiverton

Town. He was manager at Chippenham Town a few seasons ago where he taught his

then assistant Rich Fey, absolutely nothing… allegedly…!!!

FLEET TOWN YOUTH

Unfortunately the youth team have just succumbed to their first league defeat of the season. The defeat was the in the home game against Guildford City and ultimately ended in a 4-0 reverse. The lad’s next game is home to Alton on Monday 7th January 2019. This is a must win game for them to keep pressure on at the top of the table. With Fleet Spurs and Camberley looking to pull away this is vital. The youth team play their home games at Calthorpe Park and if you are free the £4 entry fee is well worth it to see them play good passing football. You never know you may see a future star of the Fleet Town 1st team.

Fleet Town Ladies have made a solid start to their season in the Hampshire County Women’s League Division 2. The league is a large one of 13 teams of which a majority are in the Southern regions of the County. After four consecutive defeats the ladies have bounced back with a league victory against Fordingbridge Turks. The ladies won 2-1 and this has now moved them back up to 4th place in the league. This is a great achievement given the young age of the team. Fleet’s Ladies next home game is against Widbrook Reserves on Sunday 6th January 2019, kick off 2pm, all support gratefully received.
