Seeing a confluence of opportunities andthe ability to bring both technical knowhowand economies of scale — with reducedcosts — world gaseous fuel vehiclesequipment leader Landi Renzo early this

year established LandiRenzo USA as its ninthsubsidiary company outsideof Italy.

“We believe we canoffer an important contribu-tion by giving the United

States the chance to take practical andeconomical benefits,” said Andrea Landi, president of Landi Renzo USA.

Andrea Landi is the son of parentcompany president Stefano Landi, who ishimself the son of founder Renzo Landi.

He has established the new companyin Torrance (Los Angeles), in a 22,000square-foot (2,040 square-meter) facility, nearly three quarters of which is dedicatedto the installation of alternative fuelsystems on site.

Although most of Landi Renzo’s worldbusiness is in bi-fuel vehicles, Landi RenzoUSA will accommodate market demandwith dedicated-CNG offerings, AndreaLandi says. He expects prices to comedown (American aftermarket conversionsare thought to be the world’s costliest) with

increased volumes, he told F&F. “We’re going to bring the economies

of scale” necessary to make gaseous fuelvehicles more economical, Landi RenzoUSA sales and marketing VP Matt Weisssaid in Las Vegas last month.

There the company unveiled avariable-PSI electronic regulator for CNG,and indicated that its first U.S. offeringcould be a fuel system for a cargo van.

American interest in clean fuels, “par-

ticularly natural gas,” is at an all-time high, said Landi Renzo CEO Claudio Carnevale.

“As in other cases, our group decidedto play a key role,” Carnevale said.

“The time is now,” says Weiss. Landi Renzo’s other international

subsidiaries are located in India, Poland,Holland, Brazil, China, Pakistan, Rumania, and Venezuela.

In addition to Fiat’s many models, including the Doblo here, Landi Renzo’slist of OEM customers for NGVs andpropane-LPG vehicle includes Chery(China), General Motors, Hyundai, Nissan,Peugeot-Citröen, Renault, Suzuki, Toyota-Daihatsu, and Volkswagen.

And, since the last world show,NGV2008 in Rio de Janeiro, Landi Renzoacquired Italy’sLovato, theworld’s numberthree player, bringing a strong position inareas including the former Soviet Union.

BBRRCC FFuueellMMaakkeerrMTM/BRC comes to NGV2010Roma aspart of a far bigger entity, as its parentFuel Systems Solutions has purchasedCanada’s FuelMaker after also acquiringTomasetto Achille of Argentina. And, theLos Angeles-based Impco Technologiesunit of FSS is again promoting, and assid-uously certifying, gaseous fuel systems forvehicles in the U.S.

The BRC FuelMaker name is nowbeing applied across a range of compres-sors from Phill home fuelers for singlevehicles to vehicle refueling appliances(VRAs) to fully accessorized, transit fleet-capable units.

Production, including the small com-pressors formerly made in Canada, isbeing shifted to a new plant in Cherasco,in northwest Italy, with new productionlines to be up and running January 2011,says sales director Mario Pirraglia.

Another BRC goal? “Make Phill more

affordable and available to all who desirehome refueling.” New parts suppliers arepart of the equation, Pirraglia says.

BRC FuelMaker has also beefed upservice, with small compressors supportedby Impco in Santa Ana (Los Angeles),California.

GESI, California’s Gas EquipmentSystems, Inc. has been named the

exclusive U.S. distributor of large BRCFuelMaker compressors. TomasettoAchille is handling South America sales.

BRC FuelMaker is at Stands A2 andE18. Parent FSS also owns Italy’s Zavoli(Stand E8).

Pirraglia will detail the evolution ofFuelMaker to BRC FuelMaker at theFueling Infrastructure session Thursday.

According to a letter ofintent, fuel is to be acquired from Gasrecof the UK, Rolande commercial directorPeter Hendrickx told F&F here Tuesday.

The truck is owned by Chr. VermeerTransport of Dongen, The Netherlands, which Rolande says stepped up as the first“to collect experience with a truck runningon LBG in the daily transport service.”

The LBG vehicle can run more than1,200 kilometers – 745 miles – on a singlefill. “We managed to overcome the typicalproblem [range] when using CNG astransport fuel in trucks,” Rolande says.

CCAAPP ffoorr HHAAMM VVoollvvoossFollowing tests on a Mercedes Axor enginelasting a year, the UK’s Clean Air Poweron Monday reported a £200,000 deal tosupply its Genesis Edge brand dual-fuel

systems for ten LNG-fueled Volvo FM13tractors operated bySpanish LNG distrib-utor HAM. Savingscould amount to£1,000 per monthper truck, CAP said.

CCzzeecchh RReeppuubblliicc FFoorrggeess AAhheeaaddThere were some 1,800 NGVs in the Czech Republic at the end of2009, including 270 buses, and 23 public CNG fueling stations, upfrom nine public stations supporting just 250 NGVs in 2004, reportsPavel Novák, NGV manager with the Czech Gas Association. The biggestjump, 600 vehicles including 55 buses, took place from 2008 to 2009.

“Over the past five years, the averageannual growth in CNG consumption in theCzech Republic has been 25.1%,” Novaktold F&F. He credits a 2005 governmentresolution which “helped to professional-ize the approaches taken.”

The Czech Gas Association is preparing the fourth edition of theProspects for the Development and Use of CNG in Transport annualinternational conference, aka Czech NGV 2011, to be held in PragueFebruary 9-10, 2011. Besides CzGA (Stand F31), Czech exhibitors hereinclude Vítkovice Cylinders (B24), which is part of a 30-company industri-al group, and Chart Ferox (E27), for LNG systems.

VVeerrssuuss GGaassPoland’s Versus Gas is at Stand F24promoting a line of sequential gasinjection hardware for natural gas andpropane-LPG vehicles. Thecompany began assembly of gassystems, using mostly Italian compo-

nentry, in1991, andby 2005 wasbringing itsown designsto market.

Versusgained ISO9001 recognition in 2008.

Products today range from EC110R-approved engine control units to

wiring harnesses and fuses. Versus, which is a member

of IANGV, is promoting a newtechnical support service too.

Stako Enters CNGLongtime propane-LPG fuel tank supplierStako, of Slupsk, Poland is at its customerBRC’s Stand A2 promoting a new line oflightweight CNG cylinders. Stako has 200-bar/3,000-psi Type III and Type IV tanks, carbon fiber-wrapped, which it is offering tovehicle upfitters.

BRC is an obvious target, as arecurrent propane fuel container customersLandi Renzo (C10) and Tartarini (C18),says commercial director Arek Kubasik.

“We make everything from scratch,”he says of the new CNG cylinders, including aluminum liners (from tubestock)for the Stako Type III and HDPE plasticliners for the Stako Type IV tanks.

The lightweight fuel vessels are alsoaimed at bus manufacturers. Poland is thelargest busbuilder in Europe, Kubasiksays, producing some 4,500 vehicles lastyear. As interest in CNG grows, “we are ina good place with this product,” he told F&F.
