Board officers were elected at the May meeting of the Fletcher Place Neighborhood Association. They are: Jeff Miller, president; Greg Townsend, vice president; Doug Dilling, secretary; and David Edy, treasurer.

Executive SummaryFletcher Place is respected for its rich history, an ex-

pectation of excellence and a commitment to historical preservation. This is what gives Fletcher Place the vi-brancy of a city and the comfort of a community.

Fletcher Place is a place to call home. Residents en-joy their safe haven and the spirit of community that is continuously enhanced as everyone comes togeth-er to enjoy and support the various social events and the well-known Italian festival. Everyone feels wel-come and is anxious to be involved and give back as we work together to preserve the special heritage of Fletcher Place.

The plan’s recommendations are designed to guide development and redevelopment of Fletcher Place Neighborhood. As a continuous gateway, Fletcher Place will link together residential neighborhoods and become the social heart of downtown. As a result of our unique geographic location, we will incorporate

“A Little Off Center” as our defining slogan when com-pared to surrounding neighborhoods and districts.

Mission Statement for Fletcher Place Neighbor-hood of the City of Indianapolis

“Preservation, revitalization and the promotion of the neighborhood as a walkable community of the City of Indianapolis known as historic Fletcher Place, with the goal of creating a total urban community while maintaining a respect for the past.”

“Fletcher Place neighborhood shall promote a healthy and sustainable urban community by allow-ing appropriate redevelopment while reflecting on the preservation of the historical character and integrity of the neighborhood.”

By Jeff Miller For two hours on the

first Saturday in June, a group of neighborhood residents and a work crew provided by the city can-vassed the neighborhood on a mission: make it shine for the annual Italian Festi-val the next weekend. With bags over their shoulders and gloves on their hands, they walked down streets, alleyways and along the fence lines of the Interstate picking up anything they saw that nature didn’t pro-vide on its own.

Thanks to a dumpster provided by Keep India-

Neighborhood gets a face-liftnapolis Beautiful, even large brush and heavy trash items were disposed of. Each year it seems like the neighborhood is easier to clean up, which is a credit to everyone’s effort to pick up around their homes and make our neighborhood something to be proud of.

A special thanks to those who helped on the day of the cleanup. In addition to a dozen people from the city work crew, I was joined by many fellow residents and business owners: Robb Biddinger, Georgia Cravey, Keith Holdsworth, Jeff Miller, Rhonda Peffer, Ron

Reichel, Gerold and Mar-lina Schmid, Deb Tate, Bob West, and Todd Von Deylen. Special thanks to Jim Whit-timore who loaned his truck for picking up bags and debris. Also, thanks to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful for providing the supplies. As the summer months unfold, please continue to pitch in by tidying up the sidewalks and alleyway around your house. Every bit helps to keep our neighborhood looking clean and inviting and making it a healthy and safe place to live.

How about consider-ing becoming a block cap-tain in Keep Indianapolis Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Block program? It’s an on-going litter abatement program that empowers residents to beautify down to the very smallest neighborhood unit, the block. Founded by Lonnell “King Ro” Conley, Adopt-A-Block is in its eighth year.

There are 260 Adopt-A-Block coordinators in the city now, two in Fletcher Place: Robb Biddinger and Deb Tate. There’s room for more! Coordinators get a bucket, shovel, broom, heavy duty dustpan, litter grabber, trash bags, gloves, a resource guide, and door-hangers to reach out to neighbors. Blocks are scored at least three times a year, and those that main-tain an average score better than 2 (out of 4) get a flat of flowers the following spring. In addition, all blocks regardless of clean-liness score are eligible to receive free trees through KIB’s NeighborWoods pro-gram.

There are more perks too, but first you have to sign up. Contact KIB at 264-7555.

Lumen Christi Cath-olic School on Stevens Street is expanding. Holy Rosary Church recently purchased two buildings nearby on East Street and plans to lease one of them to Lumen Christi; the other will continue to be leased to a law firm. The buildings are two of three owned by the church and formerly used as dormi-tories for boys attending the Latin School, which

It was a fast and furious spring for bocce ball play-ers. The Italian Heritage Society has announced the winners of the Spring Bocce League Tournament, held on June 13 at Lacy Park during the Holy Rosary Italian Street Festival.

The 16 best teams were invited to play. Here are the four finalists and their placement:

• Paul and Michael Liberatore, first place

• Mark and Mike DeFabis, second place

• Gino Sgro and Vince DeFabis, third place

• Joe and John Defabis, fourth place

The summer league starts the week of July 6th. If you are interested in playing visit www.italian-heritage.org.

Bocce springleague concludes

By Julie DevineAnother year, another

dinner! It seems the residents of Fletcher Place have begun another tradition…the annual Progressive Dinner. Once again it was a success. This year’s dinner took place in the evening of May 16. The pleasant and beautiful night led to an evening packed with talking, laughing and meeting new residents. I just hope we did not scare anyway. After all, we are a lively bunch. Trying to pace oneself for each course was a task in itself. Since I am now acting as social chair for the neighborhood, I believe it was my responsibility to

taste every appetizer, entrée and d e s s e r t o f f e r e d . After all, if I have to wri te about the e v e n t , I need to be fully aware of all menu items. My responsibilities are overwhelming.

The cattle crawl began at 6 p.m. when all of 20 or so hungry residents strolled eagerly into the first host home of Jeff and Carolyn Miller. The Millers, along with help from Jennifer Wolfe, prepared a feast

of appetizers. The spread looked as good as it tasted. Appet izers inc luded delicious bacon wrapped dates that became my new addiction. Furthermore, there were skewers with melon, prosciutto and mozzarella cheese, along with plenty of fancy dips. Watch out Martha Stewart. Personally, I was eager to see the expansion of the Miller’s home. I was not let down. Their kitchen was beautiful, elegant and roomy. Now I know why

Neighbor: Matt Schif-fler, Fletcher Avenue

Year moved in: 2009Why did you choose

Fletcher Place? I moved from Boston to

Indianapolis after complet-ing my Ph.D. at Harvard in the fall of 2008. I had some other job offers, but when I visited, I liked Lilly and I liked Indianapolis.

Before I moved, I knew that Indianapolis was the capital of Indiana and that there was a car race here every year, but that was about it. I lived at Riley Towers for a few months, but when I bought a home, I wanted to live closer to Lilly. I found my 1873 home on Fletcher Avenue and moved to the neighborhood in January 2009

What do you value

about Fletcher Place?Fletcher Place is the most

“Boston like” neighborhood in Indianapolis. The neigh-borhood is historic and within walking distance of many of the city’s amenities. I also like the friendliness of the neighbors and the architecture.

What improvements would you like to see?

I’d like to have aneigh-borhood grocery store, and I wish there was some way to cut down on the motor-cycle noise.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I love baseball. I played in high school and I have been a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan which takes some patience right now. I also play on a Lilly softball team. I attempt to play the guitar (badly) and I read mostly chemistry stuff.

I am very competitive. I visited my parents’ home in Virginia Beach recently and played Guitar Hero with my brother and sister-in-law. They were really good, so when I got home I quickly purchased a Nintendo Wii and Guitar Hero so that I could work hard on my skills. When I think I can beat them, I’ll play them

again. When I first pur-chased the Wii and Guitar Hero, I could spend my time plastering the cracks in my old house or I could play Guitar Hero. I chose to play.

I am a research scientist in discovery chemistry at

Lilly. I seek to invent drug molecules, which involves working closely with biolo-gists to make sure the drugs go where they should in the body and that the drugs interact properly with their molecular targets.

Garden parties fun and educationalFletcher Place resi-

dents enjoyed two garden party events this spring, sponsored by the Garden Committee. The first was hosted by MaryAnn Petrosino on May 19. There were two master gardeners on hand who entertained gardening questions and provided great information as we toured MaryAnn’s yard. Our thanks to MaryAnn and Master Gardeners Steve Mayer and Boynton Robson for a very inter-esting evening.

The second garden party was hosted by Keith Holdsworth and David Edy on June 7. Keith, a landscape architect, pro-vided insights into his choices for plants and their placement in the yard. Thanks to Keith and David for a lovely evening in their yard and on their porch.

For information on the Garden Committee or to share your suggestions for garden events, contact Rhonda at [email protected].

Steve Mayer enters MaryAnn Petrosino’s garden through her vine-covered arbor, as others admire her vibrant irises. Steve teaches the Master Gardener program at Purdue Extension, Indianapolis.

Keith Holdsworth, a landscape architect, explains the plantings in his and David Edy’s (far right) yard.

they were anxious to help prepare appetizers. With a kitchen like that, I too would spend more time cooking.

Next course was my house. Dave Bertorello and I quietly departed and prepared for the group’s arrival. Luckily, I live a few houses down from the Millers. Last year Dave and I went Italian. This year, we went Mexican serving both chicken enchiladas and cheese and beans

enchiladas. To date, there w e r e n o complaints and no one got sick, so I would say it was a success.

The group progressed to dessert at the historic home of Tiffany and Tom Ellefson on the corner of Cincinnati and Lord Streets. Again, their home was only a few minutes away but

enough to burn away a few calories. Their home is adorable. The inside is just as beautiful and well kept as the outside. Could their yard and landscape be any more beautiful? Desserts included cake, fruit and ice cream. Everything was delicious and satisfied my sweet tooth. We spent the rest of the evening talking, laughing and enjoying the bottles of wine that seem to follow the group from home to home.

Everyone agreed it was another successful year. In fact many have expressed interest in hosting another dinner this year. We could shake things up a bit by having more than three host homes and/or picking a theme such as International, Hawaiian/Tropical, State Fair (deep fried salad? hum…), The Godfather, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Caddyshack, or Seinfeld. If you are interested in being a host please contact me at [email protected] and I will organize the event.

Next on the FP Social Agenda is the Ice Cream Social on July 17, 6 p.m., at Lacy Park. Bring a chair along with your sweet tooth.

Planters installed on Pine Street

It’s a wrap. In a creative use of the limited amount of open property in the neighborhood, Fletcher Place Develop-ment, LLC, has built Fletcher Place Terrace, which partly faces Fletcher Avenue and partly faces South College Avenue, wrapping in back of the old gas station and a few houses. The rental flats and townhomes will be ready for occupancy in late July, and the developer is talking to potential commer-cial tenants for the ground floor on the College Avenue side. The photos are before and after construction on College, just south of Fletcher.

The Fletcher Place Neighborhood Associa-tion, Inc. has installed large concrete planters at the south end of Pine Street. The purposes of the pots are to beautify a Fletcher Place streetscape and to provide a visual barrier at the dead end.

For years travelers have

sought a direct route from the Interstate ramp to points south along Virginia Avenue. But these motor-ists are thwarted at the last moment by the sidewalk that blocks Pine Street from intersecting with Virginia Avenue, College Avenue and Stevens Street. The pots are tall enough and

the plants in them are tall enough to provide an early warning that the street does not go through. Residents along the south end of Pine Street have already reported a lessening of lost traffic.

The pots and the flow-ers in them were funded by a grant from the Annie Casey Foundation.

The pots have been filled for the summer with cannas, sweet potato vine, coleus and zinnias. Mums will arrive in the fall and evergreens will be installed for the winter.

Chaos art gallery in the old Virginia Bank building, owned by Leah Keel, put on four great First Friday shows before closing in June. There’s a possibility she may locate in Fletcher Place again down the road.

Her Closet owner Tanikia Meeks announced she’ll be closing her shop (next to the Virginia Bank building) at the end of July.
