ROLLING STOCK STORAGE

One of the greatest challenges facing our industry over the coming years is storage. With over 7000 new vehicles entering service and a similar amount to replace, never has there been such a logistics challenge since the displacement of steam by new-fangled diesel and early electric traction.

Space for holding vehicles is at a premium, as is the availability of the logistics expertise to move them in what can be a complicated and specialised field.

Experience has taught us that there are three basic forms of storage, all of which that Hanson & Hall can provide and tailor as your need arises. All are easily adapted to suit the type of vehicles in storage.

Warm Storage Tepid Storage Cold Storage

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATIONFrom South Wales to the Scottish borders, Hanson & Hall has a network of storage locations, each uniquely equipped to handle your bespoke storage needs.

The integrity of your assets means a lot to us, therefore all of our sites…• Have 24/7 secure access by road or rail haulage• Provide undercover facilities and storage for components and interior fittings• Provide undercover facilities and welfare amenities for personnel working on site• Provide access to three phase power supplies, some with 25KV overhead supplies or DC

power supplies• Militantly secure by combinations of Palisade fencing, monitored CCTV, security gated

access, motion sensors, motion activated lighting, dog patrols and even natural prevention, such as rivers and marsh lands.

• Location specific on-site shunting locomotives, with shunting and mainline locomotives available for providing ETS supply and shunting provision.

TEPID STORAGEEverything you need to keep a rail vehicle in good order, short of full mainline running. Tailored to individual customer’s needs.Services include:

• Vehicles maintained according to a pre-agreed VMI, easily altered as need arises.• Enhancements offered based on experience of previous storage of similar fleet types.• Interior fittings protected in situ or removed to under cover dry storage area.• Machines powered where possible. Access to 25KV and DC power systems.• Provision of ETS supply to run HVAC on hauled coaches and Class 442• Provision of gel packs• Regular reporting of interior condition and arising mechanical defects• Maintenance actioned on arising repairs, addressing developing water ingress etc• Dehumidifiers can be supplied in the limited under cover area available at one of our storage locations• Under cover dry storage for spare parts, removed seating and documentation• Provision of locomotives for exercising braking, wheel bearings and air suspension systems• Adaptor couplings, barriers and translator vehicles or fitted locomotives to carry out regular short movements to slow bearing degradation and reduce brinelling.• All necessary maintenance records maintained and supplied to the customer• All RSL and ECM requirements managed

Tepid storage allows rapid deployment of vehicles to new customers, at a much-reduced return to service cost.

A Class 442 EMU receives tepid storage from a diesel locomotive. Batteries, HVAC and Auxiliaries are operative and ‘live’ on

the EMU.

WARM STORAGEWarm storage puts your rail vehicle on Hot Standby!

Ideal for a fleet in short or medium-term storage with a guaranteed new home, that will require rapid deployment and entry into revenue earning service.

This storage option is an extension of Tepid, that includes the regular mainline running of vehicles to ensure their consistent readiness for return to service. A reduced maintenance regime to reflect reduced mileages from normal service operation can be agreed, with the fleet positioned at one of our storage locations with rapid access to maintenance facilities. Warm Storage can easily be reduced to Tepid or Cold storage should the customers situation change. All running certification, RSL and fleet ECM requirements will also be managed. A warm storage programme will be allocated a dedicated pool of train drivers and WTT pathing, and if the fleet type requires, suitable locomotive types and shunting personnel.Any defects arising whilst in warm storage will be reported and can be repaired at the instruction of the customer.

COLD STORAGE

Cold storage is very much how it sounds.

Vehicles and components are parked in open secure storage with no further tasks undertaken until the customer requests it. Hanson & Hall recommends this option for a fleet that is most likely be disposed of within a short period of time. This is the most cost effective solution if that is the intention for the vehicles. Stock can be moved to a site for disposal with little additional work and certification required if the period of storage is short.

Not sure how long they will be stored for? This is normal for Hanson & Hall customers.

We can advise and consult with you, achieving the most cost-effective outcome. We understand rolling stock storage is a bit of a ’dark art’, therefore we can help you make the best decisions for preserving the life of your assets. Hanson & Hall can make any changes to a cold storage provision at short notice.

DISPOSALS Hanson & Hall have experience in both the disposal of passenger vehicles and freight wagons. Our disposal facilities can recycle 99% or more of an end of life vehicle, finding further use for plastic panelling, glass, seat cushions and carpets. These sites can combine a short period of cold storage, before a disposal is to take place allowing cost reduction and speedily reuse of components.

We will guarantee discretion to protect reputations, and ensure value add wherever possible. Providing all environmental certification prior to beginning any disposal programme.

We can also arrange:• Stripping, storage and logistics for all retained parts.• Facilitate the reuse of vehicles for alternative methods, potentially a reputational gain for the customer. • We have experience in providing end of life vehicles to emergency services training facilities, charities and

even reuse as hotel accommodation, as well as arranging the road transportation to the vehicles new home.• All end of life environmental certification and removal from RSL

99% Recycle Rate

Less than 1% of a vehicle will reach landfill.
