FLING THE TEACHER

WHAT? Creates multiple choice quizzes with a minimum of 15 questions. One wrong answer means the student has to start again meaning that it is useful for learning information. Hints are available to students (ask the expert, take away 2 wrong answers, see votes as to which might be the correct answer.)

WHERE? The ‘Fling the Teacher’ generator can be downloaded onto your computer for free from http://www.contentgenerator.net/forum/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=29.

It creates local html and swf files on your computer.

HOW?Click on the (create a new game) icon. You will then see a form where you can enter the

questions and answers. Click the red arrow to move on to the next question.

Save the questions as a text file on your

computer using . When you have entered 15

questions the icon will become active.

Review the set-up and then press . Your game will be created.

WHY? The game motivates students to repeat the questions until they get all the answers right. This is the only way that they can see the teacher being flung. This makes it a good tool for learning discrete pieces of information, or where repeated attempts would benefit the students. It could be used to:

answer multiple choice grammar questions (e.g. accuracy exam practice). activate background knowledge (e.g. the Internationalization of Food) and follow up

with questions about which information was the most interesting / surprising. learn / review information (e.g. nations and nationalities, past simple forms of verbs,

gerunds/infinitives, or vocabulary meanings).

WHERE?

The ‘Half a Min’ generator can be downloaded onto your computer for free from http://www.contentgenerator.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=452.

WHERE?

The ‘Jeopardy Labs’ game is free. You create the game online and are given two unique urls, one to access the game and the other to make further edits. The editing facility is password protected so only you can make changes. You can find ‘Jeopardy Labs’ at http://jeopardylabs.com.

HOW? Click on ‘start building’ on the home page. Enter a password and click ‘start building’. Enter a title for the quiz. Then enter five different categories across the top of the columns. Click on the boxes in the grid and create your questions.

Click ‘save’ on the main grid to save your game and create the unique urls for your game. You can always go back and edit your game (providing you’ve remembered the password.)

If you cannot see the bookmarks toolbar, you may need to enable it. It can usually be found under the ‘view’ menu of your browser. For Internet Explorer, you should right-click on the link and save it to your ‘favorites’. A message box will appear, warning you that you are adding a link that ‘may not be safe’. XTRANORMAL

Page 11: Fling the Teacher and Other Activites Joanne

WHAT? Create monologues and dialogues online in a range of different scenes and using different ‘actors’. You can control what the characters say, some of their movements and expressions, and even the camera angles as you create ‘movies’.

The characters read out what you type and there are a variety of voices to choose from. The only problem is that, as with all programs that read out what you type, the speech sounds a bit stilted.

WHERE? You can create your movies at http://www.xtranormal.com/. You need to create an account first. The completed movie is published online and a unique url will be created which you can share with your students or which they can share with you.

HOW? Choose a showpak and decide if you want to create a movie with one or two actors.

Each showpak contains several different locations and actors. You can select these at the bottom of the page.

Write the script that you want the actor(s) to say. Drag action icons into the script. These will allow you to direct the action.

Click action to preview your work. You will be able to keep editing after this. When you are happy with your movie, click ‘it’s a wrap’. A higher quality version of your movie will then be created and you will have a unique url to share the movie with others. Even at this stage, if you’re not happy, you can still go back and edit the movie.

WHY? The voices do not sound natural and this limits possible uses. However, you could use this to: practice listening to numbers, spelling of words, etc. have students prepare and film dialogues to practice a particular language point, or

to create an IELTS interview with their possible answers to set questions. have students write a paragraph on a topic and then create a movie for it do a dictogloss/grammar dictation. Students listen to a movie three times and note

down as much as they can, focusing on content words. Then they recreate the text using http://primarypad.com (or in the future possibly using google wave, as they have purchased the original etherpad.com.)

use the option of having actors look at the camera or away from the camera to talk about the importance of eye contact during a presentation
