Lori Bishop Greetings Volunteers,
This year has gone by fast. Here we are in the final two months and they are actually
my two favorite months! November 10th is the Veterans Day Parade and celebrations.
You won’t want to miss this parade and indoor ceremony. It is the 25th anniversary of
the Veterans Day Parade and I’ve been blessed to be a part of this for nearly that long.
It is also the 100th Anniversary of the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley. I encourage all of
you to attend the parade and come to the indoor ceremony at 11:00 am inside City Auditorium (Peace Memorial
Auditorium). We need you to come and show your support and thank those who have served and those who are
currently serving. My deepest thanks and gratitude go to the RSVP volunteers who have worked tirelessly in planning
and implementing this parade!
I love December! Christmas is my favorite holiday and I am so looking forward to shopping for my five adorable grandchildren! Our office hours are going to change in December so please read about that in this newsletter.
We are excited about some new and creative marketing strategies. K-State student intern, Victoria Unrein, has done an outstanding job. I hope you “like” our Flint Hills Volunteer Center Facebook page where we’ve shared her informative blogs. This newsletter was designed and prepared by Victoria and we’re so thankful to have her as a part of our team.
Special thanks also to our other K-State student intern, Nicolette Nemeth, for taking on the challenging task of getting our Veterans Day posters and essays ready for our judges. She’s also been a big help to us by doing those tedious clerical duties!
I will be taking some much-needed time off in November and December. I’ll be out of the office the week of Thanksgiving and again from December 15th – January 2nd. You’ll note that Aillene is going to be gone much of December and January. The office is closed the last week of December and open again on January 2, 2018.

RSVP Volunteers (55 and over) -- your name tags are ready! Please stop by the office to pick them up and ALWAYS wear them when you're out on a volunteer assignment! If you are not part of the RSVP and would like a name tag, please contact me and I can have one ready for you! Also, when volunteering for an organization especially ones that are on the weekly volunteer opportunities, please ALWAYS make a reference and say you are part of the Flint Hills Volunteer Center. We don't have much marketing around the area and that would help us promote the Volunteer Center tremendously!

Volunteer Spotlight On: Carol Ott
Meet Carol! Carol is one of our very dedicated volunteers. She’s an RSVP member who’s
actively involved in Friendship Meals (AKA Meals on Wheels), which is a program that the
Senior Center organizes, delivering fresh, hot meals to homebound individuals every day.
Carol explained that she’s not the type to sit around the house all day, so since she’s retired
she’s found satisfaction serving others through volunteering. In addition to Friendship
Meals, she’s also involved in Schools of Hope and Harvester’s Club as well as others. I had
the opportunity to follow Carol on
one of her Friendship Meal deliveries.
Caroline starts her route at 10:30 AM
every Monday morning. So we got
right to it and I met each of her
“regulars”; John, Janis, Betty, and
Donald. She told me a little bit about
each one of them and how sometimes
she makes treats for them in addition
to their meal. Thank you Carol for all
you do for Flint Hills Volunteer Center
and our community!
Aillene Aquino: Volunteer Coordinator
Hello Team!
I can’t believe fall is here! It’s been crazy around the office lately as we have a few things coming up in the next few weeks! We are swamped but thankful for the vol-unteer opportunities we were asked to help with to coordinate volunteers for the Chili 3K, on November 4th (We are still needing volunteers!) the poster and essay contest, the Veteran’s Day parade on November 10th (you wouldn’t want to miss this!), the Ladies Night Out on November 15th and the Festival of Tress Gala on No-vember 17th. November is one of my favorite months as I always associate it with
Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. With that, I would like to take this opportunity to salute all the Armed Forc-es and the families left behind and all the many who support each serviceman past and present this day. We will be forever grateful!
Also, as we are gearing up for Thanksgiving, I just want to take this time to let all of you know how thankful I am to be part of such a wonderful program and more blessed to work with caring, selfless and ready to help volunteers like you. I may not be able to tell you how much I appreciate you individually, but know I appreci-ate all your hard work, efforts and dedication not only to the program but to the people you help every day. It is such a wonderful community to belong to! THANK YOU!

YVC has been visiting with the resident at Via Christi Village. We have done game night and have done fall crafts. Our youth really enjoy their time visiting with the folks at Via Christi Village.

Coordinator
YVC has been very busy the past few months.
We started our construction grant off making 6 birdhouses that we took to Meadowlark Hills nursing home. The youth really worked hard on the birdhouses and enjoyed this project. In September youth helped at the Mini Maker Faire in Aggieville. They helped plan and build a “cardboard city” as well as build a playground with Imagination Playground. Another project that we did for the construction grant was restoring a desk for Habitat for Humanity. The youth got to be very hands on with this project, from picking paint colors to restoring the handles of the desk to their original color. The youth have gotten very good with working with drills and other tools.
In honor of September 11th we put cookie trays together and delivered them to Fire and Police departments.
The end of October has brought us to the annual YVC Youth Summit! This year the Summit was held in Kansas City. The youth had a great time sharing all about Man-hattan and their community with others from across the U.S. and Canada. They got to see and learn what other youth are doing in their communities and they are full of new ideas, and are excited to bring their ideas to our community! A very special Thank you to Com-munity 1st National Bank, Kon-za United Way, and K-State Credit Union for sponsoring
We are so excited to begin our fall
Schools of Hope mentoring program.
