1. The first number of the deck gauge is the gauge of the fluted top sheet. Second number is the gauge of the flat bottom sheet2. “Q” is the allowable diaphragm shear capacity in pounds per linear foot.3. “F” is the flexibility factor.

1. Maximum deck span is 12 feet.2. Maximum trench header width is 36 inches.3. Concrete fill is 2-1/2 inches minimum above top of deck flutes.4. FC = Flexibility factor for concrete. FT = Flexibility factor for trench.5. For decks with trench headers, ∆w is equal to the calculated Deflection of the trench added to the Deflection of the concrete outside of the trench.

General Notes

The following notes apply to the allowable total load tables and/or to the allowable superimposed load & diaphragm shear tables. 1. Arc spot or arc seam (puddle) welds shall have an

effective fusion area, to supporting members, equivalent to at least 3/8” by 1” long or 1/2” in diameter. 2. Spacing of marginal welds to members parallel to the flutes: (a) Arc spot (puddle) welds to members, such as chords, and to collector elements, such as struts or ties, shall have a spacing in feet equal to 32,000 (t) /v, where: t = Uncoated steel thickness of fluted deck in inches. (see ICC report for “t”) v = Actual diaphragm shear at marginal supports or actual shear transferred to collector (at struts or ties) in pounds per foot. (b) Fillet welds to members, such as diaphragm chords, shall have a spacing in feet equal to 480 Iw/v, where: lw = Length of weld in inches (not less than 1 1/2” v = Actual diaphragm shear to be transferred to chords in pounds per foot. (c) Fillet welds attaching the diaphragm to

struts, ties or other collector elements shall have a spacing, in feet, equal to 300 Iw/v where:

v = Actual diaphragm shear to be transferred to the collector element, in pounds per foot.

(d) In no case shall any weld spacing exceed 3’0”. 3. Attachments at interior lines of shear transfer, perpendicular to deck corrugations: (a) The shear transfer from a diaphragm to interior

ties or strut lines, perpendicular to deck corrugations, shall not exceed the shear values indicated in the tables. Two lines of puddle welds may be used to develop the actual shear transfer to these collector elements.

4. The minimum 28-day compressive strength for structural concrete shall be 3000 psi and the density as indicated in the tables or as required for fire rating. The minimum depth of concrete shall be 2” over the top flange and it is to be reinforced with a minimum 6 x 6 W1.4 x W1.4 welded wire fabric. The reinforcement shall be placed near the center of the fill, over the top flange. If fill exceeds 3 1/4” thick the reinforcement area must equal 0.00075 times the depth of fill over top of deck, each way.

5. All decks with structural concrete fill may be considered rigid diaphragms, f<1.0, unless otherwise noted.

6. Shoring calculations are based on the deck profile supporting the dead load of concrete, plus either:

(a) a 20 psf uniform construction load, or (b) a 150 lb. concentrated live load for flexure. The dead load Deflection is limited to L/180, but not to exceed 3/4”. 7. Total Slab Thickness: is the nominal total slab depth, measured from the bottom flange of the rib to the top of

the concrete. This applies to all allowable superimposed load and diaphragm shear tables. 8. For all cellular profiles, the first number of the gauge designation (20/20) refers to beam section (corrugated

profile). The second number (20/20) refers to the pan section (flat plate).

9. Seam attachment for composite floor deck to be minimum button punch @ 36” O.C.

10. Typical floor deck manufacturing tolerances: Panel length: +/- 1/2” Thickness: Not less than 95% of the design base metal thickness Panel cover width: -3/8”, + 3/4” Panel camber/sweep: 1/4” in 10’ length Panel end out of square: 1/8” per foot of panel width

Comments on Extraordinary Conditions

A. Positive Bending Reinforcement The deck profile in a composite slab design is the positive bending reinforcement for the slab and must be expected to last the life of the structure. To ensure the integrity of the structure, ASC Steel Deck recommends specifying ASTM A653, G-60 as the minimally acceptable finish.

B. Parking Structures The following conditions are to be considered when using steel deck in a parking structure. 1. All slabs are to be designed as continuous spans with negative reinforcement placed over each support. Alternatively, the steel deck may be used as a concrete form with reinforcement as required. 2. Additional reinforcing is to be included to minimize cracking caused by temperature differential and to provide load distribution. 3. The minimally acceptable galvanized coating is G-90, as per ASTM A653. 4. In corrosive environments, the top surface of the slab is to be sealed and the bottom surface of the steel deck is to receive a field applied finish paint.

C. Vibratory Load Vibratory Loads, e.g., mechanical equipment and forklifts are detrimental to the mechanical bond between the deck and concrete. Additional reinforcing steel, designed by the structural engineer, may be required.

D. Point Load To determine the required deck type and concrete for a point load condition, an equivalent uniform load for a simple span is calculated. Example: 1. 10’0” Span 2. 400 # Point Load at Mid-Span 3. 50 PSF Uniform Floor Load Determine total equivalent uniform superimposed load. A. Maximum Moment from Point Load: M=PL/4=400(10)/4=1000 ft. Ibs. B. Equivalent Uniform Load: W=M(8) =1000(8) = 80 PSF C. Total Equivalent Superimposed Load: 50 + 80 = 130 PSF * Note: Select deck type, concrete type and thickness with a 130 PSF allowable super- imposed load capacity and span length of 10’0”. Provide distribution steel as required. E. Cantilevers

Steel deck used in a cantilevered condition acts solely as a permanent form. The length of the cantilever may be determined using the section properties of the steel deck profile. Negative reinforcement, designed by the structural engineer, is to be added over the support to prevent cracking of the slab.

F. 1% Venting Steel decking used in composite construction should be vented when the slab may be exposed to water, post construction. The vented steel deck will allow the dissipation of residual water vapor. The venting may be produced using punched hole or vent tabs. Contact ASC for more specific information per the specific profile.

The above Selection Table is based on following criteria:

1. Normal weight concrete (150 pcf).

2. Horizontal and vertical Deflection is limited to 1/4” maximum for concrete dead load

3. Design stress is limited to 20 ksi for concrete dead load temporarily increased by one-third for the construction live load of 20 psf.

4. Pour Stop Selection Table does not consider the effect of the performance, Deflection, or rotation of the pour stop support which may

include both the supporting composite deck and/or the frame.

5. Vertical leg return lip is recommended for type 16 and lighter.

6. This selection is not meant to replace the judgement of experienced Structural Engineers and shall be considered as a reference only.
