FLORIDA ARTIST GROUP, INC
PURPOSE The Florida Artist Group was Incorporated as a non-profit organization of practicing artists who had gained recognition nationally or state-wide and whose work would contribute significantly to its exhibitions. The purpose of the group is to stimulate attainment of the highest standards of creative art within the State of Florida.
ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM Since 1949, the Florida Artist Group has held a symposium and a member's exhibition each year in a different Florida city. Education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions and films.
In addition to the Symposium and Exhibition held in the Spring, area exhibitions and meetings are sponsored at other times in various places in the state. The nature of these meetings follows, in a small way, the character of the Spring meeting. They also serve to bring the members of the organization more closely together.
JURIED SHOWS The annual exhibition is juried for awards. The organization always brings in an eminent juror who is primarily associated with art administration, education or a painter or a sculptor of national repute. Past locations of exhibitions have included the Norton Museum, the Ringling Museum, the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami Metropolitan Museum and the Lowe Museum, University of South Florida, University of Florida, Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences and many other outstanding galleries and art centers

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE:
Saint Augustine and the Saint Auustine Art Associationwere great places to be as the 53 Symposium of the Florida Artist Group commenced. The exhibition was a visual delight, further enhanced by seeing FLAG members from all over Florida. I am always amazed at the rich history and superb talent that comprises this organization.
Space in the catalog is not sufficient to thank all of the people who made the symposium and exhibition such a success. Thanks to Karen Quinn, highly published writer and curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for judging our exhibition; Kay Burtin, Executive Director or the Saint Augustine Art Association for providing the exhibition with such a beautiful environment; Art Lillquist, Manager of the Page Edwards Gallery for his captivating talk on the early artists of Saint Augustine; Chair, Jean Troemel and the members of Area VI for hosting the symposium and exhibition and their untiring attention to every detail; the Lightner Museum for hosting guests of the 53r<1 Symposium; Cecily Hangen for the design and production of the catalog and to our many sponsors and supporters. A special thanks to Don Carmichael for his guidance as President.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the 54th Symposium and
Exhibition next year at ARTSERVE at Fort Lauderdale in 2004.
Robert York

JUROR'S STATEMENT:
I was honored to be invited to participate in this year's annual exhibition of the Florida Artist Group. It was an experience both stimulating and daunting. Judging one's contemporaries is never an easy task, but in this instance it was made most difficult because the quality of the work was so high, an observation I do not make lightly. In the end, my decisions were personal ones, with neither right nor wrong answers, indeed, at a different moment on a different day the results might have been different, too. I thank the artists and the organizers for allowing me to be a part of this celebration. The integrity and transcendence of the ordinary that we find in art has never been needed more.
