The face/doll is a Daruma. It is
a Japanese

was so committed to his vows thathe cut out his eyes to avoid distrac-

The Daruma is used at the begin-

has no pupils in his eyes. The per-
son committing paints in one eye
at the beginning of a commitment, and at the successful completion,
he colors in the other eye.

Presidents Message
I cant believe
Im your President
and Im writingthe Presidents
Message.
I have enjoyed
my time on the BSF Board as a
Trustee and then Vice President.
The opportunities I have had to
meet and work
with all the
Board members
have been a
most wonderful
experience. Now,
I look forwardto working for
you all as president. I want to
continue the programs that the
BSF Board has been working
on and start a few new ones all
aimed at making BSF a more
member and club orientedorganization.
I hope that in the future every
member of BSF will feel their
membership in BSF is just as
important as their membership
in their local club(s). In order
to accomplish this I wouldask all of you to communicate
with the BSF Ofcers and
Board and let us know how
you think we can better serve
you. You can contact me at
my new email address:
The following is an
interview with our
new President, George
Henderson.
Ed: How long have you been
working on bonsai?Geo:My rst exposure
with Bonsai occurred
on a birthday trip to
the Brooklyn Botanical
Gardens when I was 7. I
was immediately hooked
and have always goneout of my way to view a
bonsai collection.
Ed: About how many do you
have?
Geo: I have about 26 in various
stages of development. Im
sorry to say that since October
somebody has systematically
been stealing my trees. To date
they have stolen 11 of my better
trees and of course all the ones
in good pots.
Ed: When did you join yourrst club?
Geo: I tried to join some clubs
in California in the 70s but that
didnt work so well. I eventually
settled in Fort Lauderdale and
I ask all of you to
communicate with
the BSF Ofcers
and Board and let
us know how you
think we can better
serve you.

joined the Gold Coast Club in
1983.
Ed: What clubs do you belong
to?
Geo: I belong to Gold Coast
Bonsai Society, Lighthouse
Bonsai Society, Bonsai Society
of Miami, Treasure Coast
Bonsai Society and Chishiki-
Gawa Study Group
Ed: What ofces have youheld?
Geo: I have been everything
from laborer to President
Ed: Married?
Geo: Im married to the most
wonderful person in the world,
Eileen. She was just appointed,by Governor Jeb Bush, to be a
Circuit Court Judge in Broward
County. To be a Judge was a
life long ambition for Eileen so
we are both very happy.
Ed: Any Pets?
Geo: We have a great
Weimaraner named Grace.
Grace is very regal and runs the
house as the Queen she thinks
she is.
Ed: Where born?
Geo: Glen Cove, New YorkEd: Worked at?
Geo: I worked for the Bureau
of Alcohol Tobacco and
Firearms and retired as the
Resident Agent in Charge in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Ed: Future plans?
Geo: Im the President of the
Broward County Council of
Girl Scouts. I also serve on aFort Lauderdale City Advisory
Board, a Florida Bar Grievance
Committee, Girl Scouts
Legislative Network.
Ed: Biggest delight?
Geo: Retirement and Marriage.Ed: Biggest frustration?
Geo: I wish I had more artistic
abilities-although any artistic
ability would help
Ed: Any other hobbies?
Geo: I collect things and stuff.
Ed: Any thing else-of any
nature.
Geo: I want to be a really
good President and make BSF
a user-friendly organization
that provides needed goods
and services to all the clubs. Iam serious about what I said
about members feeling their
membership in BSF is of great
value. I want every member
to know that I am available
and would like their input as to
his or her needs, desires, andsuggestions for improving BSF.
BSF must meet their needs and
desires. I plan to do what it
takes to make that happen.

Be patient. The format may
change here and there, but I will
settle down with something decent. This is the convention issue with
lots of pictures, so there is not
much advice. I learn a lot by
reading magazines like Bonsai
Today, ABS, and BCI. I like the
centerfolds more than some of the
articles. I may not have a tree likethose, but little bits of ideas lodge
in my head and it helps me to deal
with unusual and ugly trees.
Now if you really want to see the
pictures let me know. If you send
me your email address I will Email
you a le in full color. You can
even print out the pages you want.
Even better. Now, the electronic
Email issue has links in it, and you
can go directly to the web from
your issue of Florida Bonsai-that
is neat. If you like, you can go to
a source on an issue, or to see our
advertisers sites. Click the addressand you go directly to that site.
(Just in case it occurs to someone-
dont tell me you clicked this
magazine with your nger and it
did not go to the web.)
Speaking of Center Folds, we have
one in this issue. Tear it out andhang it somewhere conspicuous.
Just slip it off the staples, dont
tear it. Pete Woods covers the
material so well I wont repeat it.

A challenge:
The next time you
have the privilege of
attending a conven-
tion visit the materialsstorage room. Look
around and try to
imagine that mess
being turned into
individual dramatic
works of art!
The convention had a
great array of Masters
Ernie Kuodid a remarkable job
on this Australian Pine mak-
ing one mistake at a time. His
explanation is that using power
tools you make 100 mistakes at a
time-your hands only one.
Suthin Sukosolvisitexplains
the why and how on this small
tree to a student.
Ben Okicame up with one
of his most creative transfor-
mations on this monster Bald
Cypress.
There is no way to express
the value and learning experi-
ence at these conventions

We have
some of the
worlds mostunique speci-
mens, and the
experts who
know this ma-
terial, and what
to do with it.
Jim Smithcontinues to
show us his
magic with
Willowleaf Ficus.
That #1 tree is about
the size of his arm. Jim
did this forest for a
demonstration.
Mary Madisonand
Buttonwoods-what
hasnt been said. What
trees! What talent!
This was Marys
Buttonwood workshop.
Lots of people went away
very happy, with a tree to
remember.
Mike Cartretthas been
all over the State and
Country showing people
how and why. Here he
demonstrates what can be
done to a Jabotakaba-it
was a unique solution. The
lucky bidder got this one in
the banquet auction.
NEVER underestimate the ingenuity and talent of
our own Florida Masters (In random order)

Then there isEd Trout.
Here is EdNo, Ben,
No, Edwell, they do
work well together.
These pictures are ofEds demonstration on an
enormous Pyracameles.
You can see-that is
a big one. This toomade a good auction
bonsai at the banquet.
Another good lesson
on what to do with a
complicated speci-
men. (I also learned
that the Pyracomelesvilmorinii is a hybrid
cross between Pyracantha and Osteomeles. Now you know too.)
Ed is one of the best artists in Florida. His efforts for BSF, the many
clubs throughout the State, and the Morikami Museum are outstanding.
Jim Vanlandingham,
signed on to assist JimSmith, and we saw and
learned a lot from Jim V. as
well. A great communica-
tor, and terric demonstrator
on his own, if your club has
not tried him for a program
your are missing a goodone.

Allen Carver,
stepped in cold turkey
for Jim Moody, who
was ill at the time, and could not do the
workshop. Here he is
giving advice on a very
strong Bucida Spinosa
in the workshop.
Dont forget that
name. You will see a
lot more of Allen. Heis a very talented, creative artist, and knows his trees. This group got a
good lesson on tempering your design and timing on a tree depending on
its characteristics, both botanical and structural.
Ernie Fernandezwas busy on the third
oor styling trees. No one told me he
was doing this. But, I heard the grinder
straining when I got off the elevator. When I went into the room, most of
what I saw looked like the picture below,
ground up wood everywhere. When I
looked up there he was styling an enor-
mous tree-or what was left of it.
See more of Ernie when you go to the
Fairchild Garden in October.
Information about the program sponsored annually by the Bonsai Soci-ety of Miami follows in this issue.
There is nothing more effective for learning about bonsai, acquiring
the materials and tools you need than attending conventions. If that
isn t enough, you get to make and meet good friendsand have fun.

put it back. Eat your hearts out.
Our inventory of exhibit class
bonsai is growing, and we contin-ue to look for contributions. We
have room for one or two loaners,
but we dont want to get overload-
ed with them.
Shortly, we should have the last
ve newly donated bonsai stands
erected. The contractor will begin
working on another project for themuseum. When he does he will
do the rock bonsai stands.
We are planning
another bonsai
retreat, probably
before the end of
the year. Next
month
we
will
provide more information.Likewise, we will tell you more
about the outstanding achieve-
ments of these two men in
the next issue.
Stop by, be our guest
expert. Provide us with
your opinion, critique the
bonsai.Or, we can enlist you,
we always have weeds to
pull, branches to prune,
trees to repot.
It is your exhibit.
From The Morikami
Things at the
Morikami Bonsai
exhibit are quiet.Of course if bonsai growing made
noise, you would hear the exhibit
ten miles away. Things are grow-
ing like crazy. Nothing like warm
rain and long days to make them
take off. Additionally, repotting is
the activity taking most of our time
these days.
With our new facilities, and a
jury rigged mist system,
we have been 0 for 15
repotting. All is going
well.
The BSF sign honoring
people who have donethe major lifting for BSF
has been revitalized.
Now it has two live honorees
on it, Dr. C. Eschenburg, and Tom
Zane. Both were honored at the
2003 BSF Convention Banquet.
Remarkable what they have done.
We will cover that in future inter-
views.
We now have two pieces of
equipment that should
turn everyone green. A
hydraulic lift table with a
very heavy duty turntable.
With this combination, one old geezer can pick
up any bonsai we have,
move it, and adjust the ta-
ble to the perfect level for
pruning the bonsaiand

An Introduction, Part 1
Collecting Workshop Material
By Gene Callahan
Jim Vanlandingham, Dave
Williams and myself took our
annual collecting trip to North
Florida the end of January,
2003. We do this every year,
but this year we were collecting
trees for the 2004 Conventionbeing held in Cape Canaveral.
The Bonsai Society of Brevard
and The Treasure Coast Bonsai
Society are jointly hosting the
convention. More information
will be published in the next
three issues of Florida Bonsai.
We took
Jims motor
home and van,
which worked
out great.
We normally
camp out or stay in
a motel. There was
ample room for the three of
us and we were warm for a
change. Jim did the cooking
and we had some great meals. We
stayed four days and went to the
Enchanted Forest, which consistsof thousands of stunted bald
cypress. A sight that makes Bonsai
enthusiasts green with envy. Of
course, its a federal landmark and
no collecting is allowed.
We arrived Monday afternoon,
set up the motor home, and went
scouting for trees. We knew what
was in the area,
and found what we
were looking for;
large Ti-Ti trees
and Hornbeams.
We returned to
the motor home,
by a river. At this
time of the year,
we were the only
campers.
The next
morning we
started collectingand what a haul. Ti-Ti 12 to
15 inches at the base, and
Hornbeam 4 to 6 inches!
These were the best trees we
have found in ve years of
collecting here. The trees will
have a year and a half toroot, bud, grow branches,
and acclimate to the area before
the Convention.
(Note: nd the beer can in these
pictures for scale/size)
Who would want a
big fat ol trunk like
that?
(Ed. I saw it rst!)

THE 2004 CONVENTION

August 200329
This will be the best material you
will nd at a Convention.
Mike Cartrett has always wanted a
large Ti-Ti;
these shoulmake him
want to tak
a workshop
instead of
conducting one. We have
enough trees for a
workshop for bothspecies and some for
the rafe.
The Ti-Ti is a
fabulous tree for
Bonsai. It has very
small leaves and deepgrooves in the bark. It is an
evergreen and can be grown
throughout Florida. Jim Moody
has a very large one that he has
had for years down in Jupiter.
Ive had some for ve years, and
Jim Van Landingham for almost
ten years. I don t know why it is
not more popular in the Bonsai
community, however, I bet after
this Convention they will be.
There are large and small leaf Ti-
Ti. The small leaf is common to
where we got these and the large
leaf is common in the Pan Handle
area.
The Hornbeams have great
muscling and spread at the base.
On all our previous trips, we never
got any that compare with these.
The Hornbeam also grows through
out Florida. This workshop
should be priority for
everyone.
While Dave and
I collected the
Hornbeams
Wednesday
afternoon,
Jim stayed
in the
van andpeeled the shrimp for supper. We
had shrimp and oysters that night.
There was no roughing it on this
trip.
We got back late on Thursday
evening and, as know, collectingthe trees was just the rst phase.
We now had to pot the trees. We
put them in my pond until the
potting operation on Friday.
The next morning we started
potting. It was the coldest morning
of the year at 26 degrees, and
stayed below freezing until almost
noon. Jim had a hood over his
head and all the clothes he could
nd. My wife said he looked like
an Eskimo. We did the potting in
