We acknowledge that God is the Provider and Florida Christian is His school, and He will sustain it using individuals as His instruments, whether School Board members, administrators, faculty members, parents, alumni, or friends. In this our 50th year, we have embarked on a capital fundraising campaign, SMAART21 (Students Maximizing Academic Achievement through Relationships and Technology) to fund the renovation of every one of the classrooms in the school. This renovation includes new classroom technology for students and faculty, campus-wide LED lighting, and new innovative furnishings to meet the needs of the modern school classroom. Our campaign is not all about fundraising; it is about building relationships with our students, our families, and our community to create a partnership that will allow the mission of our school, envisioned by our founders 50 years ago, to be sustained for many generations to come. In order for SMAART 21 to be a reality, we need everyone in the Patriot Nation to get involved and participate at some level. We can suggest a range of levels of participation, but our emphasize is on 100% participation. We are challenging our parents and alumni who are business owners to participate at a corporate level. We are challenging each individual family and friends of the school to participate at the level that they can, but in order to be successful, we need everyone to participate. The goal of the campaign is to fund the cost of both the physical updates and the technology updates on a per room cost basis, as well as a total project cost. Our goal is to identify individuals, families, and businesses who would sponsor multiple rooms, one room, or a portion of a room. We will honor all those who sponsor a room with a plaque of recognition. The cost per room is approximately $30,000. The physical updates are estimated at $21,500 per classroom, and the technology updates $8,500. FCS has engaged a professional fundraising company who specializes in raising funds for Christian organizations. This company tells us that a campaign designed to raise $1 million would be characterized by having at least one gift that will represents 15%–25% of the total raised (or 1 gift of $150,000 to $250,000), and the top ten gifts should make up at least half of the total raised ($400,000 – $500,000). They also emphasize the importance that everyone associated with the organization participate. I am asking each person within our FCS family to commit to pray for God’s hand of blessing on this project and seek God’s hand in all that is done. Our prayer commitment must be for His hand on this ministry so that our mission to the students and families at FCS can be accomplished and our faithfulness to the Gospel will result in building the kingdom of God here at FCS. I am also asking every person who is associated with FCS to make a personal or business commitment to be a part of funding SMAART21. Katie and I have by faith committed to sacrificially give to SMAART21 and we urge you to consider how you and your family or business can do the same. On Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 7:00p.m. the 50th Anniversary Gala will take place at the Rusty Pelican. This event is an opportunity to invite friends and family to join us in celebrating 50 years of Christian education at FCS and to participate in supporting our initiative to provide for beginning the next 50 years. Fall 2017

Florida Christian School exists because for 50 years we have trusted in the Lord to provide for the needs of His ministry.

We are challenging each individual family and friends of the school to

participate at the level that they can, but in order to be successful, we need everyone to participate.

Katie and I have by faith committed to sacrificially give to SMAART21 and we urge

you to consider how you and your family or business can do the same.

At FCS, every family contributes to the on-going improvements that are made each year on our campus during the summer through the School Improvement Fee. These improvements range from the interior of classrooms, offices, and common facilities to the exterior development and landscaping of our common areas on the campus.

This past summer, our staff was very busy and we were able to complete many projects throughout the short summer weeks. Many of the things that were accomplished can only be done in the summer when the buildings are not occupied and the number of people on campus is low. Once again this past summer, classrooms were painted, carpets and flooring were replaced or deep cleaned, and minor repairs were made on all those things that needed attention. In addition, the following projects were accomplished:

· All campus lighting, including classrooms, offices, gymnasium, hallway lighting, and parking lot lighting was replaced with cost-saving LED lighting fixtures and bulbs.*

· The main campus cafeteria dining area was completely renovated including new flooring, wall treatment, tables, seating, and décor.

· The main campus cafeteria rest rooms were completely renovated.

· The technology in each classroom was changed by eliminating the old Smart Boards, projectors, and television sets and replacing them with state of the art touch screen Mimio Boards.*

* These projects are not funded by the School Improvement Fee. They are part of theSMAART21 capital campaign and funding is dependent on the generous gifts of ourfamilies and friends toward the renovation of every classroom in the school which willinclude new flooring and furnishings in every classroom.

We thank each of our families for their commitment to FCS and all of those on our maintenance staff who worked hard all summer to make this a summer of significant improvements.

As the 50th year of FCS kicked off, students and faculty started much like they do every year: with the opportunity of engaging God during Spiritual Emphasis week. Back for the second consecutive year, Ken Freeman came all the way from San Antonio, Texas, to encourage and challenge the Patriot Nation from God’s Word. The week began with a challenge for students to evaluate their lives through the lenses of Scripture. Ken brought to light the reality that many believers can go about their walk comfortably and settled in their sin, but we are called to flee darkness and pursue righteousness. 1 John 1:9 tells us that “God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” if we willingly come before God to acknowledge our wrong. Students were already responding to the call and acknowledging their need for God on the first day. But as the week began to unfold, we were quickly met with reality that Hurricane Irma would impact the

community of South Florida. Although school was canceled at the end of day on Wednesday, it did not prevent God from engaging our students through our two chapel sessions. Countless students came forward for prayer, and many acknowledged their need for God by making a proclamation of faith. Students prayed for their broken relationships with parents and relatives; faculty prayed over students and their families. God moved undeniably in the hearts of students and faculty alike. And though the week did not turn out as planned, we have hope and assurance that God worked in FCS according to His greater plan. Please continue to pray for all of those who trusted Christ as their Savior, and ask that God would continue raise leaders within the student body who would be able to stand firm in their convictions and commitments to Jesus Christ.

Helping ChildrenCope with Disaster Federal Emergency

Management Agency

Children may respond to disaster by demonstrating increased anxiety or emotional and behavioral problems. Some younger children may return to earlier behavior patterns, such as bedwetting and separation anxiety. Older children may react to physical and emotional disruptions with aggression or withdrawal. Even children who have only indirect contact with the disaster may have unresolved feelings.

In most cases, such responses are temporary. As time passes, symptoms usually ease. However, high winds, sirens or other reminders of the emotions associated with the disaster may cause anxiety to return.

Children imitate the way adults cope with emergencies. They can detect adults’ uncertainty and grief. Adults can make disasters less traumatic for children by maintaining a sense of control over the situation. The most assistance you can provide a child is to be calm, honest, and caring.

A Child’s Reaction to Disaster by AgeBelow are some common physical and emotional reactions in children after a disaster or traumatic event:

BIRTH TO 2 YEARS - When children are pre-verbal and experience a trauma, they do not have the words to describe the event or their feelings. However, they can retain memories of particular sights, sounds, or smells. Infants may react to trauma by being irritable, crying more than usual, or wanting ot be held and cuddled. As children get older, their play may involve acting out elements of the traumatic event that occurred several years in the past and seemingly forgotten.

PRESCHOOL - 2 TO 6 YEARS - Preschool children often feel helpless and powerless in the face of an overwhelming event. Because of their age and small size, they lack the ability to protect themselves or others. As a result, they feel intense fear and insecurity. Preschoolers cannot grasp the concept of permanent loss. They see consequences as being reversible. In the weeks following a traumatic event, preschoolers’ play activities may involve aspects of the event. They may reenact the incident or the disaster over and over again.

SCHOOL AGE - 8 TO 10 YEARS - The school-age child has the ability to understand the permanence of loss. Some children become intensely preoccupied with the details of a traumatic event and want to talk about it continually. This preoccupation can interfere with the child’s concentration at school and academic performance may decline. School-age children may display a wide range of reactions - guilt, feelings of failure, anger that the event was not prevented, or fantasies of playing rescuer.

PRE-ADOLESCENCE TO ADOLESCENCE - 11 TO 18 YEARS - As children grow older, their responses begin to resemble adults’ reaction to trauma. They combine more childlike reactions with others that seem more consistent with adult reactions. Survival of trauma can be equated with a sense of immortality. A teenager may become involved in dangerous, risk-taking behavior, such as reckless driving or alcohol or drug use. In contrast, a teenager can become fearful of leaving home. Much of adolescence is focused on moving out into the world. After a trauma, the world can seem unsafe. A teenager may feel overwhelmed by intense emotions, and yet feel unable to discuss them with relatives.

PREPAREDNESS HELPS

FROM THE GUIDANCE & COUNSELING DEPARTMENTProvided by Janet Mattern - Director of Guidance Counseling

Preparing for disaster helps everyone in the family accept the fact that disaster can happen, and provides an opportunity to identify and collect the resources needed to meet basic needs after disaster. Preparedness includes:

• Talking about damage that may be caused by disasters that can strike in your area of the country.

• Deciding on a number to call and a place where the family will reunite if separated by a disaster.

• Pulling together supplies of basic items: food, water, battery, radio, flashlight, etc.

• Selecting valued personal items for each member of the family to take if you are required to leave your home. For a child, suich items may include a favorite ty, blanket or other item that the child uses as a source of comfort when upset.

• Safeguarding personal posses-sions with emotional importance such as photographs, family heir-looms, baby books, or other items that can’t be replaced. Be sure to include one or two items that your child is especially proud of.

Meeting the Child’s Emotional NeedsChildren usually take their lead in a situation by reading the emotions of adults. Adults should share their true feelings about the incident, but maintain a sense of calm for the child’s sense of well-being.

Listen to what the child is saying. If a young child is asking questions about the event, answer them simply without the elaboration needed for an older child or adult. If a child has difficulty expressing feelings, allow the child to draw a picture or tell a story of what happened.

Try to understand what is causing anxieties and fears. Be aware that following a disaster, children are most afraid that:

• The event will happen again• Someone will be killed• They will be separated from the family• They will be left alone

Reassure children with compassion and understanding.Suggestions to help:• Hug and touch your children.• Calmly and firmly provide factual information about the recent disaster.• Encourage your children to talk about their feelings. Be honest about your own.• Spend extra time with your children at bedtime.• Re-establish a schedule for work, play, meals and rest.• Involve your children by giving them specific chores to help them feel they are helping to restore family and community life.• Encourage your children to help develop a family disaster plan.• Make sure your children know what to do when they hear smoke detectors, fire alarms, and local community warning systems such as horns or sirens.• Praise and recognize responsible behavior.• Understand that your children will need to mourn their own losses.

You’ve tried to create a reassuring environment. If your children do not respond when you follow the suggestions listed above, seek help from an appropriate professional such as the child’s primary care physician, a mental health provider specializing in children’s needs or a member of the clergy.

ELEMENTARY NEWSSherril Nealey, Elementary Principal

September 11th is a significant day in our nation’s history and we commenmorate this day with special chapel services. While we are careful to relate the events of the terrorist attacks on Spetmeber 11, 2001, we seek to thank God for his protection and sovereignty. Our school has named this day “American Christian Heritage Day”. Although we were not in school on 9/11 this year due to Hurricane Irma, we were able to honor our nation during chapels on September 19th and 20th. The students sang patriotic songs and our Safety Patrols presented the colors of the flag and led the assembly in reciting the pledges. Our aim in commemorating this day is not only to proclaim our allegiance to our flag and nation, but also to acknowledge that America was founded upon Biblical principles and we seek to honor God and country. God Bless America!
