GlennonDavidDodd,1948‐1991
GlennDoddwas,for10ofthe15yearsthathewasinmosquitocontrol,theAssistantDirectorofIndianRiverMosquitoControlDistrict, inVeroBeach,Florida. Tothosewhoknewhimwell,
and for those who did not knowhim, he was much more than anassistant director. He was thespiritualleaderformosquitocon‐trol in themosquito control pro‐fession.Hewasthe irsttorecog‐nizethatmosquitocontrolhadtoget into the employee trainingbusiness. Glenn was the forcethatgotitstarted.Hecalleduponhis substantial intellect, his col‐leagues, especially Jim RobinsonofPascoCountyMosquitoControlDistrict and Bill Opp, then with
HRS/DACSandnowretiredfromLeeCountyMosquitoControlDistrict,hisotherfriends,andhisfuturefriendstoorganizeandpresentseveral“courses”inVeroBeachduringthefallof1984.The six courses taught that year were more appropriatelycalledgroupdiscussionsandtheywereaboutavarietyoftop‐ics of interest tomosquito control such as surveillance, larvi‐cides, adulticides, applicationequipmentandcomputers. Theparticipants were principally the directors and biologists ofFloridaprogramswhosataroundinasemicircleinvariouslo‐cationsand“talkedaboutthings.”What started as a simple idea has blossomed into one of thelargestand,arguably,thebestsetsoftrainingcoursesformos‐quitocontrolintheworldtoday.Thisyearover25coursesareoffered, from a half‐day to several days in length. Each year,thoseofusontheDoddShortCourseCommitteeaskourselvesifGlennwouldbepleasedwithwhatwearedoinginhisname.

WethinkGlennwouldbeproudofthisyear’sofferings.Nam‐ingthecoursesforGlenn,afterhissuddenandtragicdeathin1991,wasnotsimplyagestureof thanksandrecognitionofGlenn’scontributions.HisnamebecameaconstantremindertousofthehighidealsthatGlennpersoni ied. Wehopeyouindthatthe2013DoddShortCoursesdescribedinthisbro‐churemeetyourtrainingneedsandexpectations.TheDoddShortCourseCommitteealwaysislookingforideasfor new courses and for enthusiastic and hard‐workingcourse coordinators and instructors to participate. COURSEDESCRIPTION:AnelementarycourseontheuseoftheESRI,ArcGISDesktopforthosewhoareinterestedinArcGIStoassistintheautomation,analysis,andvisualizationofmosqui‐tocontrolspeci icdatasetssuchasmosquitotrapcounts,land‐ingratecounts,larvalcounts,rainfallmeasurements,andsen‐tinel chicken seroconversions. Datasets will be investigatedusing conceptsandprocedures suchasAnalysisTools,ModelBuilder,PythonScripting,ArcToolbox, SpatialAnalysis,Tem‐poralDatasets,DataConversion, andGeodatabases.
