reconstructing the in-jured man’s ear — deli-cate surgery that wouldlast deep into the night— Mardirossian met withthe man’s father.
“He was still in his run-ning clothes.”
Mardirossian ex-plained to the gentlemanthat he was concernedthat the man’s son had al-so suffered facial nervedamage, but that theywouldn’t know until “Idid testing on him thenext day.”
Sure enough, testingconfirmed that one of theinjured marathoner’s pri-mary facial nerves hadbeen transected.
Time was now of theessence.
“There’s a 72-hour win-dow in which to repairthat kind of damage,”Mardirossian explains.
Without the secondprocedure, the man’sforehead muscles wouldno longer function andhe’d look disfigured.Mardirossian surgicallyrepaired the nerve dam-age the following day(Wednesday) — althoughfull regeneration wouldtake months, even years,to occur.
Two years later, Mard-irossian reports the pa-tient — who has kept incontact with Mardirossianvia Facebook — says he’spleased with the resultsand his facial muscles arefunctioning properly.
So touched was Mard-irossian by the runner’sgratitude that he calledit “the best compliment Ihave ever received.”

The manhunt for sus-
pect Dzhokhar Tsarnaevconcluded two days laterlanded on his block.
“My wife, who waseight months pregnant atthe time, and I were liv-ing in Watertown. Every-thing was on lockdown. We couldn’t leave ourhouse. The police cap-tured Tsarnaev 50 yardsfrom our front door.”
Tsarnaev, who wasconvicted last week onall 30 charges, had suf-fered severe facial gun-shot wounds at the timeof his arrest.
He’d require imme-diate medical care — inMardirossian’s specialty.
“I was on call at oneof the two hospitals hecould have been takento,” Mardirossian says.
Tsarnaev was trans-ported to the other facil-ity.
Mardirossian assuresthat, had the need arisen,“Of course I would havetreated Tsarnaev to thebest of my abilities.”
That said, Mardiros-sian was pleased withlast week’s guilty verdictsand, as for sentencing, believes “Tsarnaev is anexample of true evil, so Ihope he gets what he hascoming to him.”
