In January, I asked one of my clients whether she had made any New Year’s Resolutions and she said that

she did not have a resolution but did have a word for the New Year, which was “balance.” When it comes to running and exercising, I think balance is the perfect word. Runners and walkers tend to do the same exercise all the time which can lead to over use injuries. There is a phrase going around now which describes what we want to accomplish and that phase is “muscle confusion”. We can continue to run and walk but one needs to add exercises that use different muscle groups. We also need to change our running and walking efforts on a regular basis. We should be doing a faster paced run or tempo run to pick up our daily speed. Better runners should be doing a speed workout on a track. Walkers should be doing some pick ups or surges a couple of days a week to push themselves a little harder.

The muscle confusion should come with some other workouts using different muscle groups. Core workouts, yoga, weight training or flexibility routines are ways of using supportive muscle groups to provide a balance to your running and walking. Triathletes run, swim and bike but they too should be doing some flexibility training to help prevent over use injuries.

The other area we need to seriously think about is our diet. We all are a study in chemistry so what works for the another person may not work for you. We need to find food groups and supplements that complement what we are trying to do. If you are trying to loose weight I think Weight Watchers does a very good job of telling you what and when to eat. If you are a triathlete or endurance athlete you need to make sure you get the right amount of nutrients to fuel your body. There are many different versions of energy drinks and endurance supplements to assist you in performing at your best. Gu products, Hammer products, Accelerade products and Cliff Bar products are some companies that make very good food products for the endurance athlete.

If you are running or walking more than four days a week, you should be rotating two pairs of shoes. If you are doing faster paced running, a light weight trainer would help in your workouts and be useful for races. Using two pairs of shoes will help keep more balance in your running.

Balance also means spending quality time with people and events that matter to you the most. Balanced exercise should help to make you a happier and healthier person.

How to Choose a Running Store

Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPed

Every runner who is serious about his or her sport, and wants to run comfortably and virtually pain-free, has no choice but to try to find the best running store in their city. And, there are certain things to look for to help you make your best decision.

The first thing that you want to find out is: “are they really interested in me or do they just want to make a sale?” The second, “are they knowledgeable and well-trained?” And third, “do they have any special training or additional credentials?”

Be pleasantly mindful that most running-related problems can be “cured” by a knowledgeable salesperson. And most running stores carry an array of products to positively supplement your shoes. Running shoes are your most important pieces of equipment, but they are not the final word on comfortable running or injury prevention. Until someone invents some type of contraption which custom-mold shoes to your feet, there will always be a place for products such as foot supports and protective socks. So, don’t necessarily be put off by a salesperson suggesting additional “accessories” along with your shoes - as long as he or she clearly explains the benefits of each. Be put off if they don’t offer options that may make your running experience better and more pain free.

So, how can you tell if a salesperson is well-trained and tuned into really helping you, personally? One of the first questions a proactive salesperson should ask is: “Ok, tell me what hurts, either during or after your run?” When I’m working with a runner I sometimes have to ask 4 or 5 times before issues arise. Don’t take pain as status quo for running. Make a list and bring it in. With the right advice, this simple interaction could offer you years of pain-free running.

Always bring your worn running shoes with you when purchasing new ones. They can reveal a myriad of information that will be helpful with your new purchase. The salesperson should analyze them and explain why they are, or are not, working for you. From abnormal wear patterns they may even be able to tell you what hurts. Along with being able to explain why they feel that you are having a problem, they should also explain why their suggested recommendations should provide relief.

Running shoes all work differently and are made to potentially help different biomechanical issues. Some work better than others for a specific problem. Some just work better than others. They also are all shaped differently. Always ask what other runners are experiencing with the shoes you are trying on. “What is their track record?” “Do you have many returned?” Be suspect if you are told that “they all work alike”, or “all features are the same, it’s just how this company does it”. Always ask to try on their best-sellers for your particular needs. They sell best for a reason.

If you are still having problems in the days or weeks following your new purchase, go back to your running store for re-evaluation. Sometimes you cannot be fixed on the first try. Or someone else in the store may see a different solution for you. If not, it may be time to try another store. If left occurring too long, your pain will probably develop into an injury, which will stop you in your tracks. Most of the time, this doesn’t have to happen. Keep running!

Is Ft. Desoto a dying race location? As we enter the 2012 racing season, I think it’s important for any athlete using the Ft. Desoto Park facilities to be clearly aware of the threat to future racing at the Park. This applies whether you are a tri-athlete ( there are at least six triathlons slated), a duathlete, or a runner. Recent budget cuts have required the Pinellas County Commission to make drastic changes in the costs to the public for Park use. While most of you may have heard about the $5.00 per car charge to use the Park now in effect, when in the past, access was free, I bet you’re not aware of the “road closing fee” required to be paid by your Race Di-rectors. The road fee is not new: the AMOUNT of the fee is. Prior to 2012, it was a $1,000 fee. Now that fee has been tripled to $3,000. In the past, at least with the RPM races (Escape, Top Gun, Suncoast, and Chilly Willy) the $.35 toll onto Ft. Desoto was paid by the race direc-tor for the athlete’s convenience. With the advent of the $5.00 per car charge, as well as the now oppressive road closure fee, the Race Directors cannot, in my opinion, afford to pick up these costs for the athletes. With the added $5.00 car charge, I can foresee fewer athletes being willing to pay the extra charges which may be required to be passed on to the athletes. An example of a race already in peril will be the Jr. Top Gun event; a free standing youth event that made no money for the Race Directors BEFORE these new charges were instituted. As of the writing of this piece, there is a single toll for taking the $5.00 per car fee; they do not take the sunpass; they do not take credit cards; and they are not equipped to handle much cash. Picture 1,200 athletes trying to get into the park between 5:30 and 6:30 am, as will be the case in April for Escape; picture how long and how backed up that traffic will be. And, don’t forget; the vast majority of those coming to race will be leaving before the Park regulars arrive for the day. Ef-forts thus far to obtain County agreement to not charge the per car fee for early morning events have been met with no interest. Similarly, a $3,000 road use fee, as exorbitant as that is, apparently is ok by Coun-ty standards. There is no place better suited for safe racing on the West Coast of Florida than Ft. Desoto Park. Please be willing to let your County rep-resentatives know how important access at a REASONABLE COST is to you.

That Smell Isn't You; It's Your Clothes! Did you know? Technical clothes that wick sweat can also whip up a powerful sweat-driven smell. Workout clothes are under constant attack from "funk", aka bacteria, starting with their very first use. Why? Technical fabrics are made from hollow fibers designed to channel moisture and heat away from your body. Body oils accumulate within synthetic fibers more easily than in natural ones. These body oils provide a welcome home to bacteria, and the bacteria are what actually cause your clothes to smell. And a hot-water wash? Well that just invigorates the little biota. So your clothes come out of the wash smelling fresh and clean, but as soon as you add heat and moisture, in other words, as soon as you start to sweat, the bacteria bloom and reactivate! That’s why you can sometimes smell like @#%$* within just a few minutes of exercise. Just remember, that smell isn’t you; it’s your clothes! You can do three things to help fight the funk! 1. Dry your clothes ASAP after working out.

Bacteria multiply in moist environments. 2. Wash with WIN or Penguin Brand detergents and air-dry.

Using WIN or Penguin Brand detergent helps reduce bacteria density in hollow fibers and creates a less bacteria-hospitable environment within the fabrics. Regular detergents actually block the fibers.

Odor-producing bacteria that live on synthetic fabrics are invigorated by heat, so don't machine dry, which adds extra heat and re-activates those stinky little biota.

3. Replace clothes after two years.

After two years, it is almost certain that bacteria will have established a permanent beachhead in any fabric.

Elasticity and other important fabric characteristics will also likely have deteriorated to the point of deserving replacement.

Rich Wills is the owner of FITniche, a group of 3 small community running stores located in North Tampa, Clearwater and Lakeland. You can replace your workout clothes at a FITniche near you.
