Preview of Beloved Prey, a portable opera with koto. A lioness adopts a baby antelope; a mother antelope seeks to rescue her child. Set by Alexis Kandra, costumes and libretto by Cris Ryan and music by EtM Con Edison/FCCA Composer-in-Residence Kento Iwasaki. Performers: Sishel Claverie, Joy Tamayo, Hirona Amamiya, Maiko Hosoda, Iwasaki. Also featured is Moon Princess Song Cycle, performed by soprano-piano duo Sara Heaton & Akiko Sasaki.

Join International Juggling champion Greg Kennedy for an interactive workshop on juggling and creating beauty in motion. For ages 6 and up.

Greg Kennedy has just returned from five years of touring with Cirque du Soleil. Spherus is a nonverbal trio show that features International Juggling champion Greg Kennedy, complemented by two aerial acrobats. Greg’s structural shape creations appear in this show, along with dazzling artistry on trapeze, silks and spinning hoops.

The Moth StorySLAMMON, JAN 26, 7 PMTickets: $8

Open to anyone with a true story to share on the night’s posted theme: state lines and personal boundaries. When the doors open, storyteller hopefuls put their names in The Moth Hat. A half hour later, names are picked, and storytellers take the stage. Each person has just five minutes! Ten featured stories are scored by teams of judges selected from the audience who pick the StorySLAM winner. Sign up or just enjoy the show!

The Composers Collective Winter 2015 concert showcases new works written for Folie à Deux, a charismatic viola duo of Nora Krohn and Nick Revel. The Composers Collective is a diverse group of emerging composers drawn together by a common passion for composing new music to be heard and experienced by a live audience.

Celebrate the Year of the Ram with Asian dance and much more. Curated by Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou, this year's sampler will present demonstrations of dance from China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Mexico, Step from the U.S. and more.

Two great masters of calligraphy from two traditions, Mr. Chao-Lin Ting (102 years young) and Dr. Yoo Sung Lee, are both highly respected by the Chinese and Korean communities. This unique exhibition during the Lunar New Year will demonstrate the extraordinary essence of harmony between two great cultures in the Chinese Hsu-Fa and Korean Hangeul scripts. The beauty of writing welcomes harmony in the Year of the Ram!

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre presents the award-winning play, FILM CHINOIS, an atmospheric noir mystery set in 1940s China written by Singaporean playwright Damon Chua and directed by Kaipo Schwab.

DANCE:

Dancing Wind EARTH, WATER, FIRE, AND WINDFRI, FEB 20, 8 PM$15/$10 Members & Students

Dancing Wind is a cross-cultural project that explores traditional & contemporary choreography of Asian dance through an infusion of live world music from both Korean and Chinese traditions. Performed by Song Hee Lee, Korean dancer and choreographer, Ling Tang, Chinese dancer & educator. The live music group features Korean traditional musicians Rami Seo (gayakeum) and Minji Park (komungo), and Chinese traditional musicians Feifei Yang (ehru) and Jiaju Shen (pipa) joined by percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.

Welcome in the Year of the Ram with calligraphy workshops led by Chinese calligraphers, Mr. Chao-Lin Ting and Mr. James Shan (1PM) and Korean calligrapher Dr. Yoo Sung Lee (3PM). Learn basic calligraphy to write your New Year’s wishes in Chinese and Korean.

Six-time Grammy-nominated pianist Fred Hersch is a graceful soloist and sought-after accompanist, as well as the anchor of one of the greatest trios on the jazz scene today. With his impeccable technique, Hersch makes ballads sing sweetly and up-tempo tunes jump with pulse-quickening verve.

EastRiver EnsembleCAPTIVATING CHINESE MUSIC AND DANCE SAT, FEB 28

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP AT 1 PM$7/$4 Children/Free for members with tickets to 2:15pm show

Interplaying sounds and movements in traditional Chinese stagecraft, EastRiver Ensemble presents a program of folk dance, acrobatics stunts and a range of traditional and folk music with focus on the Dongbei and Hebei regions of north China, featuring the yangqin (dulcimer), the pipa (lute), flutes, fiddles and percussion.

PERFORMANCE AT 2:15 PM$13/$10 Members/$8 Children/$6 Member Children

EastRiver Ensemble introduces the history and effects of a range of instruments including erhu (fiddle), yangqin (dulcimer), pipa (lute) and percussion, that have come to characterize Chinese music as we know today. Presented in a mixed demo-narrative mode, the group illustrates how this music has evolved, how it was personally experienced in China, and how it continues to transform itself through their lives in New York City.

Asian Fan Dance WorkshopSAT, MAR 7, 2 PM$10/$8 Members & Children

Song Hee Lee, Korean dancer and Ling Tang, Chinese dancer will teach simple fan dance routines from both Korean and Chinese traditions. No dance experience necessary and all levels welcome. Bring your own folding fan or borrow one of ours.

CONCERT:

Momenta Quartet TAN DUN GHOST OPERASUN, MAR 8, 2 PM$15/$10 Members & Students

Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera (1994) is a five-movement work for string quartet and pipa, with water, metal, stone and paper. Inspired by childhood memories of the shamanistic “ghost operas” of Chinese peasant culture, it calls on the spirits of Bach, Shakespeare, ancient folk tradition, and earth/nature. The Momenta Quartet returns to Flushing Town Hall for this dramatic and theatrical performance, joined by virtuoso pipa player Zhou Yi.

Join members of the renowned Taylor 2 for an interactive dance workshop representing the wide range of athleticism, humor and emotion found in Paul Taylor's work. For ages 10 and up

Established in 1993 by Paul Taylor to ensure his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, Taylor 2 is modern dance unhindered by technical limitations. In selecting repertoire for Taylor 2, Mr. Taylor chooses dances that span the broad spectrum of his original work. This performance includes the sunny Aureole, and the serious The Uncommitted, with a brief intermission.

PUPPETRY WORKSHOP AT 1 PM$7/$4 Children/Free for members with tickets to 2:15pm show

Join the master puppeteers of Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia in an interactive puppetry workshop as they display various puppets from the production, discuss how they are constructed, demonstrate their manipulation methods, and then you get to be the puppeteer! For ages 5 and up.

Beloved stories by Eric Carle, retold on stage through fanciful puppets that teach as well as entertain. The triple-bill includes the wonderful story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar's metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly, the fanciful account of Little Cloud's travels through the sky, and the Mixed-Up Chameleon's discovery of his own unique nature.

The Queens Jazz Orchestra, conducted by NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath, plays a tribute concert to Tony Bennett and Ella Fitzgerald. These great jazz legends have all lived in the borough of Queens, and are all a part of the illustrious history of Queens Jazz.

Formed at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, The Balsam Chamber Ensemble is a scholarship-receiving ensemble, honoring Artur Balsam who was a Classical Pedagogue. The ensemble performs a wide range of repertoires from the Baroque period to 20th century, and provides a first-class chamber music experience. Funding is provided by the Balsam Foundation.

Performing Sacred COMMUNITY FORUMTUE, APR 21, 6:30 PM, FREE

Utilizing theater to stimulate group talk, New York Theatre of the Oppressed’s trained actors and mentors will work with LaGuardia Community College Humanities students to create a safe haven for community discussion. Issues to be discussed range from Islamic identity in post 9/11 America and various taboos affecting this community.

Formerly “Cultural Crossroads,” we’re mashing up 2 cultures on 1 stage with an open dance floor! Featuring MacTalla Mor, a Scottish band that won The Celtic Roots Traditional Music Award and Ayo Maak’s Jazz Pack, an ensemble of musicians led by Ayodele Maakheru who are exponents of the history of New Orleans Music. They’ll blend together with an impromptu jam in the last set.

10 hours of free jazz! The Third Annual Queens Jazz OverGround Spring Jazz Festival! Featuring performers from around the borough of Queens, from jazz legends to up-and-coming artists. The afternoon will also feature masterclasses by top Queens-based music educators, and performances by local middle and high school jazz ensembles, before evening performances in both the theater and gallery.

An uplifting cinematic exploration of music’s power to awaken the mind in people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This documentary focuses on “personalized music,” which uses interviews with friends and family to uncover specific pieces of music with the power to unlock memories in ways that prescription medication fails. Q&A and an iPod Drive will follow the screening.

WORKSHOP:

Experience Minhwa KOREAN TRADITIONAL FOLK ARTSUN, MAY 3, 1 PM$10/$8 Members & Children (materials included)

In this hands-on workshop, adult group (ages 12 and up) will make Da Po, a handkerchief used to teach drinking, while youth group (ages 5-12) learns how to paint one of the most well-known types of Minhwa, Tiger and Bird, which were believed to ward off evil spirits.

New York Classical Players – O’Neill’s InspirationSUN, MAY 3, 4 PM, FREE W/ RSVP ONLINE

The New York Classical Players’s highly successful 2014-2015 season comes to an end with Emmy Award winning violist Richard O’Neill featuring Schubert’s monumental romantic masterwork Arpeggione Sonata for Viola and Strings, and Bruch’s Double Concerto with violinist Siwoo Kim. The concert also features one of today’s outstanding composers, Jeeyoung Kim’s new piece commissioned by NYCP as well as pieces by Barber and Hugo Wolf.

Formerly “Cultural Crossroads,” we’re mashing up 2 cultures on 1 stage with an open dance floor! Featuring Mariachi Flor de Toloache, NYC’s first and only all female mariachi band and Yianni Papastefanou, traditional Greek singer and recording artist. They’ll blend together with an impromptu jam in the last set.

Join L’Illusion, Théâtre de Marionnettes from Quebec, for an interactive puppetry workshop, especially for young ones! For ages 4 and up. Materials provided.

An aquatic tale that moves between ancient myths and our modern era. This show takes toddlers from the wide open shores down to the very deepest part of the sea, where Ondin, a young fisherman, turns into a strange marine creature and discovers a fascinating world. Perfect for young ones, and adults will be enchanted, as well!

Discover the world of trainers, exercise riders, jockeys, saddle makers and others.

To help kick off Queens Pride week, Flushing Town Hall presents a program featuring established and up-and-coming performing artists who identify as LGBTQ and brings the event to the heart of the LGBTQ Community in Jackson Heights. Artists will be selected via an open call to performing artists of all disciplines, including music, dance, spoken word/poetry, theater, and performance art. Visit our website for details.
