One of the best things about dressing for spring is that we have the chance to carry over a few of our favorite fall pieces to a new season. Even better is that in the spring, we have the opportunity to indulge in trends galore. And this year, styles are especially fun and delicious, because there’s hardly

a look that isn’t on-trend. From laces and sheers to camoufl age and utilitarian-inspired looks, if you already own it, or see on the racks in a consignment shop, boutique or

department store, you’re probably going to look like you know what’s going on in the world of fashion. On a recent Sunday afternoon, when the breeze was nice and the skies clear, four models played dress up and told color stories—fashion stories wearing envy-invoking spring looks. There’s really no need to be jealous, though; every chic look the models are wearing came from a locally owned store. Go forth, shop, and be fabulous.

An Earth Day Toast

Gone are the days when eco-friendly meant hemp necklaces, rope sandals and patchouli oil. These days, an eco-chick is sexy and cool, fl irty and fun all while being conscientious of the environment. From cosmetics to clothing, handbags to housewares, more and more of today’s fashions go beyond fads

and acknowledge labor practices and carbon footprints. A lot of designers are even being creative with recycling materials and repurposing goods already in existence. On April 22, dress yourself up, and let’s all make a toast to Mama Earth. She deserves it. (She does have her own day after all.)

It’s that time of year once again: graduation! After four years of going to class every day—or at least diligently pretending—you seniors are ready take the next step. Before you start the next chapter of your life, we suggest you celebrate this special day in style. As you

march down that aisle, work it like a runway. Stand on the stage, collect your hard-won diploma, and wink to the crowd. They won’t know it,

but under that cap and gown you are sporting a little something extra. A pair of shiny cuff links or sexy stilettos will take your graduation getup to the next level. From all of us at the Jackson Free Press: Congratulations, graduates! Go out into the world and do great things and—of course—look FLY while doing them!

The best gifts for new moms are not necessarily cute little outfi ts or monogrammed bibs. Although most moms love opening tiny trea-

sures at baby showers, the fi rst few weeks of a baby’s life is usually a blur of more practical concerns than coordinated socks and onesies. Here are some useful gifts to help the

new mom in your life. • Diaper delivery. It is easy for a new-born baby to run through dozens of diapers and wipes before a mom even has time to take out the trash, let alone think about get-ting out of the house with a newborn to stock up on basic necessities. Before you stop by to meet the new baby, give your friend a call or a

text to see if you can pick up a package of her preferred brand of diapers, wipes or diaper cream on your way. It might not be the most personal gift, but your friend will appreciate the gesture when she doesn’t run out of dia-pers in the middle of the night. • Healthy fast food. It can be extremely hard for a new mom to even think about pre-paring meals for her family, especially right after delivering a baby. Save your friend the time and stress of meal-making by bringing by a healthy alternative to take-out food. Bring easily freezable foods to eat later if your friend already has a meal plan for that par-ticular day. Be certain to ask about dietary restrictions of your friend and her family, es-pecially if she is breastfeeding and is avoiding certain foods.

• Helping hands. Even if you’re oper-ating on a tight budget, you can give your friend the meaningful gift of your time. Ask your friend when you can come by to help her start a load of laundry, wash the dishes, take out the trash, write thank-you notes or mow the lawn. These basic necessities can be overwhelming for new moms, who may feel tired and hormonal. A short gift of your time

gives the new mom in your life a welcome respite from worry and can allow her extra time to rest or to enjoy her baby.

• Rest and relaxation. If your friend has a particularly fussy baby, she may not be get-ting the recovery time or sleep that she needs to function well, especially once her husband has to go back to work or her mom has to leave after helping out for a few weeks. Offer to take the baby on a stroll around the neigh-borhood or just to rock the baby in another room while your friend takes a much needed nap or soaks in the tub without worrying about her baby. • Gift cards. You may not be able to re-sist purchasing a tangible gift for your friend. If not, think about purchasing a gift card for your friend. Babies can be expensive, and a gift card to a local retailer such as Rainbow Whole Foods Cooperative Grocery or your favorite children’s consignment shop can help your friend stock up on baby clothes, baby gear or healthy food without breaking her budget. Or think about getting her a gift card to Lemuria Books, since babies might outgrow the cute tiny outfi ts, but nobody ever outgrows classic children’s books.

I get the boss man to see things my way, I will compromise and spend my weekends at The Rez. So why don’t you bring your blanket and join me? I’ll bring the fashion magazines!

A few weeks ago, some of our Twitter friends suggested we dedicate a FLY page to Doctor Who. He’s a cultural icon who has the ability to travel through space and time in his phone-booth time machine, the TARDIS. The Doctor’s mission is to battle injustice

and right wrongs. When near death he can regenerate his body thus explaining his many fashion trends throughout the history of the show. This doctor gets our FLY stamp of approval. Catch “Doctor Who” at 9 p.m. Saturdays on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

Why is it that we default to neckties when we think of gifts for Father’s Day? (Hey, I’m guilty, too!) This guide will help you shop for the things Dad really wants. I assure you that none of these items will

leave him saying, “Well sweetheart, it’s the thought that counts.”

believe that they are more “in” now than ever. When the temps reach 100 degrees daily, of course girls are still busting out their bikinis! Here’s a tip: Take advantage of the retail swimsuit season and score a new one from the sale rack.

Keep Kids Safe in the Waterby LaShanda Phillips

The American Red Cross says drowning is the second leading cause of unin-

tentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14. It is vital to always supervise your children while around or in water. Though swimming is fun and benefi cial, it can be dangerous unless you take the proper precautions. Use these tips to keep your child safe while having fun in the water:• Enroll your kids in age-appropriate swim classes. According to Rita Goldberg, author of “I Love to Swim!” (Launch Pad Publish-ing, 2010, $19.95), the best age to start teaching your kids to swim is between the ages of 6 months and 12 months. • Do not prohibit your children from go-ing near water. Instead, calmly teach them important techniques like fl oating on their backs, which is the most important survival skill of all according to Goldberg.• Swim in designated areas that are super-vised by lifeguards. • Although lifeguards may be present, par-ents should still actively watch and interact with their children.• Establish rules and set restrictions based on your child’s abilities. • Never leave a child unattended near the water. Use the buddy system. • Teach your child to always ask permission before entering water. • Prevent unsupervised access to a pool by choosing one with high barriers that enclose the entrance. Keep tempting and colorful pool toys out of sight.• Children should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets when in or around wa-ter, but do not rely on these alone.• Keep a fi rst-aid kit, a cell phone, and reaching and throwing equipment nearby whenever you are near a pool or beach. • Enroll in some safety courses such as CPR or fi rst aid to know how to prevent and re-spond should an emergency occur.• Check the water fi rst if a child goes miss-ing near water. Seconds can mean the differ-ence between survival and brain damage to your child—or death.• Know when to call 9-1-1. SOURCES: WWW.REDCROSS.ORG AND WWW.ILOVETOSWIMTHEBOOK.COM.

Often for special occasions, we’ll fi nd the perfect dress but forget the acces-sories. Once again, y’all are in luck because jewelry is my thing. Where

Karma Day$ by Meredith W. Sullivan

If there is something you’d like to see on our FLY page, tell us on Twitter @FlyJFP.

I believe in karma. You know, the theory that when you do good things, good will come back to you. I do enough “good shopping” (to stimulate our economy, of course!) to call July 29 and 30 my “good karma days.” Offi cially known as Mississippi’s 2011 Sales Tax Holiday, our great state has given us 48 hours with no sales tax

on articles of clothing or footwear less than $100. Now that, my friends, is FLY. For complete information on the 2011 Sales Tax Holiday and a list of eligible and non-eligible items, visit dor.ms.gov/secondsalestaxholiday.

Extended Hours for Sistersby Dustin Cardon

The Smith Robert-son Museum and Cultural Center,

528 Bloom St, Jack-son, is extending its Freedom’s Sisters ex-hibit to Aug. 22. The museum has also extended the deadline to Aug. 22 on an essay contest open to students in

grades 4 through 8. Writers should explain who their favorite Freedom’s Sister—or any influential person—is and why. They can also tell what they are doing to continue the Free-dom Sisters’ legacy. First prize is a $5,000 U.S. savings bond, second prize is a $2,500 savings bond, and third place wins a $1,000 bond. The Freedom’s Sisters exhibit, where this photo shoot was set, focuses on 20 women who, through their efforts, brought liberty and justice to African Americans. Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeod Bethune, Septima Poinsette Clark, Fannie Lou Hammer, Dorothy Height, Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks and 13 other women leaders are featured. Hours for the exhibit are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays. Ticket prices are $4.50 for regular admission; senior tickets $3; $1.50 for children under 18. Call the museum at 601-960-1457.

Ida B. Wells is one of Freedom’s Sisters.
