Wasatch Intermountain Fly Tying and Fly Fishing Expo 1

WELCOME TO THE THIRTEENTH ANNUALWASATCH FLY TYING AND FLY FISHING EXPO

The Wasatch Expo is a joint undertaking of fly tying and fly fishing non-profit fishing organiza-tions through northern Utah. These include chapters of Trout Unlimited including The Stonefly Society, lead sponsor (Salt Lake County), and the supporting TU Chapters including High Coun-try Fly Fishers (Summit and Wasatch Counties), Weber Basin Anglers (Weber County), Cache Anglers (Cache County). Also participating on the Expo organizing committee are the Salt Lake Chapter of Fly Fishers International and the Bountiful Great Western Fly Fishers Club.

The purpose of the Wasatch Expo is to provide a venue for fly fishers to see and purchase the latest in equipment offerings and services from fly fishing shops, guide services and outfitters. There are over 100 vendor booths this year. Vendors will be showing fly fishing equipment, fly tying supplies, fly fishing art, and countless other items. Fly casting ponds are provided to try your skill with a demo rod that several vendors will have at their booths.

In addition, the Expo provides a large number of on-the-water and classroom workshops on a wide range of topics taught by experts. You will find a schedule of these events on the following pages. These workshops cover places to fish, fly fishing techniques, fly casting instruction, fly tying instruction, and many other topics. The fly tying section of the Expo has nearly 80 tiers that will demonstrate their techniques and will share their knowledge with you.

The Wasatch Expo is managed and produced by a group of dedicated volunteers who represent their respective organizations. After covering the expenses for this event, any proceeds are allo-cated to the participating organizations listed above. These funds help to support the conserva-tion, education, and humanitarian efforts of their respective organizations. You can read more about those efforts on the last page of this program. Lastly, all of the organizations listed above have websites where you can learn more about their activities. We encourage you to visit their websites and to consider participating in their organizations.

We hope you enjoy this program and leave eager to try out your new equipment or new tech-niques. If you want to leave us any comments or suggestions, you can email me at [email protected]. We hope to produce an Expo each year that exceeds your expectations and, with your help, we will do so.

The following organizations have participated in various parts of the Wasatch Expo supplying volunteers to assist in plan-ning and executing the various parts of the Expo

STONE FLY SOCIETY, SALT LAKE. The Stonefly Society is a group of like-minded anglers that are concerned about con-serving fishing and aquatic habitat along Utah’s Wasatch Range. We enjoy sharing the love of fishing of all styles. As a chapter we support the following programs: Trout in the Classroom, Stonefly youth trout camp, Reel Recovery, Casting for Recovery, PHWFF, our main current project is the Mill Creek Restoration Project, we do river clean ups both as a club and in support of other local clubs. The money we make at the expo goes to support all of these worthy causes and we encourage you to join us for a meeting to learn what we are all about. PRESIDENT Scott Antonetti - [email protected]

HIGH COUNTY FLY FISHERS, PARK CITY. High Country Fly Fishers (TU Chapter 599) We are a conservation and community service oriented fishing club with members located throughout Summit and Wasatch Counties. HCFF conducts projects throughout the year including sponsoring seven Trout in the Classroom programs, willow planting around Strawberry Reservoir, supporting Project Healing Waters through fly tying, rod building, and fishing events, fly tying and fly fishing classes for kids and adults, and other community service projects. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Red Rock Brewery in Kimball Junction. Sign-up for our email on www.hcff.net. Old friends and new members are always welcome, so drop by for good conversation, interesting programs, and fishing stories. PRESIDENT Dave Allison, [email protected]

IN SIMPLE TERMS FLY TYING is the process of producing an artificial fly used by fly fishers to fool a fish into a false sense of security. Spend time with any of the Expo’s fly tiers and you will quick-ly see a grander perspective on the task. Attaching fur, feathers, floss and foam to a hook brings a connec-tion and joy to the pursuit which can only be felt by those who engage in the process. Those who take fly tying to the next level and then willingly contribute their knowledge to the fly fishing community merit rec-ognition. A special thank you to the expo’s fly tiers for their donation of time, expertise and personal financ-es to advance the art of fly tying. The expo would not have the same feel without your participation. A tip of the hat also goes out to Dave Gibson and the Great Western Fly Fishing Club for countless hours of orga-nizing and ensuring the fly tying aspect of the expos becomes a reality - your service is greatly appreciated.

Contest OverviewCompetitors will cast five rods for distance and one rod for accuracy. This contest is not designed to be an ACA style event, but to reflect the actual conditions found on the stream while casting to fish! The rods will consist of five 9 ft. 5 wt. rods -- one fiberglass, one bamboo and three graphite - all different models from various sponsoring manufacturers. The reels and lines are also provided by our sponsors. The fly caster must make one distance cast with each rod and the cast must fall within the pond to score. The caster will then choose one of the five rods, and cast to each of five targets beginning with the nearest. The target scores are 100 points inside the outer ring and 200 points inside the center ring. All casting must finish in 4 ½ minutes. Flies must be on the water when time expires to record a score.Distance scores are measured to the nearest ½ foot and recorded after each cast. Distance and accuracy scores are combined for a total score. The finals are limited to the highest qualifiers in the men’s and women’s divisions.
