New jobs, new lives

The Chinese philosopher Confucius said ‘Find a job you enjoy and

you’ll never work a day in your life’

Travel, team spirit, a personal challenge and great job satisfaction

- that’s everyday life after Flying Fish.

For some it’s a first career, while others are changing direction

later in life. If you don’t want to enter the rat-race or you’re trying

to escape from it, you are facing a problem we can solve.

Peter & Jane

Peter and Jane Craggs spent 30 years inland

in North Yorkshire, Peter as a dairy farmer

and Jane a business manager at NatWest.

“We decided when we hit 50 to make

changes,” recalls Jane. “We wanted a hobby

we could enjoy together when we retired

and thought learning to sail would be fun.”

“We enjoyed it so much we decided to take

it to a professional level,” explained Peter.

“I signed up for a Yachtmaster course with Flying Fish and Jane for Coastal Skipper.”

A year later, they were cruising the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, as skipper and

first mate on a private yacht. They are now just starting their fourth season out in the

BVI’s running a 46ft Catamaran called Heartbeat 111.

“We initially sailed monohulls - then progressed to catamarans which seem to be really

popular out here, explains Peter.

“They are certainly much easier to work on as you are not constantly running up and

down the steps in the companionway….”

“We’re combining our love of entertaining with our love of sailing – the perfect life,” says Jane.

Tasha

At 27 Natasha Wakefield discovered

windsurfing in the UK and after a few

months was completely hooked.

“By the end of the year I had decided that

my ambition was to become a windsurf

instructor and work overseas.”

Three months later, she ditched in her job

as an art gallery curator in Sussex and

joined a Windsurf Instructor Professional

Traineeship with Flying Fish in Sydney and

Greece. Tasha now enjoys endless summer,

teaching in Lefkas from April to September

and in Margarita from November to March.

“Working as a windsurf instructor is

everything that I thought it would be

and more. It’s so rewarding watching the

smiles on people’s faces as they progress

and enjoy windsurfing. My dream has

become reality – life is awesome!”

Gordon

Aged 22, Gordon Young from Scotland had always loved sailing and wanted to make his

passion his career.

Four years after completing a Yachtmaster course with Flying Fish he is captain of a 72ft

performance yacht based in the Med.

“I would definitely recommend working on yachts full time as I love it. You get to see some

of the world’s most beautiful places. The Galapagos, Tahiti and Croatia are my favourite

so far. I get to go sailing a lot and I enjoy the technical challenge of looking after such

a complicated boat. Also, no day is the same so there is no chance of getting bored.

The money is also very good and you should be able to save a large amount if you are sensible…..”

Dean

29 year Dean McCann had been based in London, working in corporate IT for four

years. He was finding the city lifestyle beginning to wear thin.

A keen recreational skier, Dean decided to ‘go pro’ and he enrolled on the Fish Ski

Instructor course, heading off for Vancouver and the mountains of Whistler & Blackcomb.

After graduating, Dean worked for the rest of the season as a ski instructor at the

Kosciusko Thredbo snow sports school in Australia.

Dean now balances his time between living in Holland, working back in IT and running

his own ski holiday company in Slovakia, Blue Snow Adventures, where he spends the

winter. “With more and more of my time being spent on Blue Snow, it looks like it

won’t be too long before I completely give up the desk job (again!)”

Dane

23 year old Dane Kearney grew up on Australia’s Gold Coast and has always

had a passion for watersports. He finished school, gained entry to university

and decided to defer his studies and plan a gap year. He trained as a dinghy

sailing instructor with Flying Fish and has now been teaching for the last

four years!

“I had two options. One was to go to uni and study and the other was to train

with Flying Fish and go for a job overseas, maybe in the Mediterranean,

teaching sailing. For me it was a pretty straightforward decision.”

He now divides his time between both hemispheres, teaching at high performance

RYA sailing centres in Greece and Sydney.

“My gap year(s) have been awesome. I’ve not only greatly improved my sailing

and instructing skills but also learnt so many life skills. I can’t say I’m ready to

give up the endless summer just yet, though Mum says I’m developing a bit of

a Pommie accent ....”

Nicky

Having finished her A-levels in England, Nicky Parmee was looking for a good reason to

spend a year in Australia before going to university.

She qualified as a dive instructor on a Flying Fish Traineeship in Sydney and spent the

next six months working on the Great Barrier Reef.

“While I was doing my degree I taught diving at the university and was lucky to get the

opportunity to work in Hawaii during one of my summer holidays. I spent four months

working out of Waikiki beach diving with the turtles, tiger sharks and seals.

“I tried working in an office after graduating, but nothing compares to the lifestyle of

working as an instructor. Four years on, I’m back in Sydney where the ocean starts at

the bottom of my road, the beach is where I do most of my business and I get to do a

sport that I love almost every day of the week.”

Flying Fish UK is based in Cowes and we love it. Flying

Fish has chosen the world’s best training locations – and

for sailing the Isle of Wight is certainly one of them.

Our yachts are berthed at Shepard’s Wharf, with direct

access to the Solent and the English Channel. The Solent

is a broad stretch of sheltered water between the Isle of

Wight and the mainland. It is the country’s busiest waterway,

with a complex tidal regime which offers a navigational

challenge to all who sail here.

Cowes has six yacht clubs and the most famous is the

world’s oldest: the Royal Yacht Squadron. In August all six

join forces to host the Cowes Week Regatta, one of the

world’s most exciting events for the recreational sailor.

Accommodation ashore with Flying Fish is at Point

Cottages, right beside the water with fine harbour views.

These three properties are simply but comfortably

furnished, with balconies, an enclosed courtyard and

a riverside terrace.

Across the courtyard you’ll find the Flying Fish training

rooms where we teach navigation theory, yacht

maintenance and safety courses.

In the summer this is a very active town, with a busy

calendar of sailing events. Out of season Cowes is quiet

but the Island offers surfing, bike trails, horse riding and

beautiful country walks. And all this is only two hours

from London by train and passenger ferry.

Join Flying Fish for a sailing course in Cowes and we

promise you an absolute adventure.

Welcome to Cowes

Sydney is home to the Flying Fish Sail Academy at MiddleHarbour Yacht Club. You know you’re at the right venue as thisis also the base for the Australian Olympic sailing team. WithFlying Fish you’ll soon be cruising past the Sydney OperaHouse and under the famous bridge.

Middle Harbour has an active racing scene. Newcomers willlearn the excitement of competition and experienced racers arealways in demand to join a crew.

Leave the harbour and the ocean sailing is magnificent. On aFlying Fish course you explore the New South Wales coast, heading south along the route of the Sydney Hobart race ornorth towards Seal Rocks and Coffs Harbour. Wind conditionsvary from warm north-easterly sea breezes to strong southerlybusters. This is offshore passage-making at its best. You willsee dolphins, maybe whales and, of course, flying fish.

While living ashore in Sydney you stay in our crew apartmentsat Queenscliff. They are simply furnished but well equipped –and just a few minutes walk from the surf beach at Manly.

Manly is Sydney’s premier beach resort, with great dining, entertainment and nightlife. What’s more it is only 15 minutesby high speed ferry to Circular Quay and all the attractions ofcentral Sydney.

In the winter month of August, we sail north to the tropicalWhitsunday Islands of Queensland for Hamilton Island Race Week.

Train as a professionalYachtmaster

flyingfishonline.com 13

It’s Sunday in the south of England. 15 would-be Yachtmasters

have travelled to Flying Fish at Cowes. The six women and nine

men range in ages from 18 to 53. Some are newcomers to

yachting, others are aiming to improve skills first learnt years ago.

They move into their new waterside home to start an adventure

that will see them sailing in the Solent, crossing the English

Channel to France, and gaining an impressive list of certificates.

Six weeks later 15 qualified Day Skippers are packing bags for a

flight to Sydney. The second part of their course is designed to

give them the skills to take command on offshore passages along

the East Australia coast.

Twice a year the programme also runs entirely from Cowes,

although UK Director Andy Hunt recommends the combined course

including Sydney. “Passage making in the Pacific beats the English

Channel,” he explains, “but if you want the quickest, best-value

route to Yachtmaster, you should train with Flying Fish in the UK.”

Whether UK or Australia-trained, at the end of Part 2 our

candidates have reached Coastal Skipper standard, with over

2,000 logged miles and all the experience needed to enter a

Yachtmaster Offshore assessment with confidence.

Next comes a choice – to go straight into Part 3 for final exams,

take time out to travel or, most exciting, join the crew training for

a Yachtmaster Ocean certificate.

Flying Fish Yachtmaster courses are designed to suit every sailor.

They all lead to a commercial qualification, issued either as an

Offshore certificate, for charter and sailing school work, or as an

Ocean certificate, for long distance deliveries.

Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Pro Traineeship – 14 weeks

Yachtmaster /Master of Yachts Ocean Traineeship – 18 weeks

Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Fast-track – 9 weeks

Yachtmaster Commercial – 12 weeks

We offer training and assessment for professional certificatesof competence from the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency(MCA) the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and YachtingAustralia (YA). Sunshine, travel, beautiful places and happy faces.

There are worldwide job opportunities for yacht captains andcrew, stewards and stewardesses, engineers, sailing instructors, delivery skippers and a range of related shore based staff insales, operations management and technical support.

Yachtmaster Offshore/Master of Yachts 200gt is the qualificationyou need as a professional yacht skipper and Flying Fishtraining is widely recognised as an excellent launch pad.

Superyachts, so called because they are bigger than 24m inlength, are magnificent with no expense spared and theirowners expect high standards of presentation and customerservice on board. There is currently a big demand for skilledand qualified crew on superyachts. Generally bigger yachtsmean more responsibility and better pay.

STCW 95 Basic Safety training is required by all crew workingon a superyacht. If you’re looking to step on board as adeckhand, you should also have an RYA Powerboat level 2certificate for driving tenders, a marine radio operator’s licenseand a Competent Crew certificate.

Superyacht officers including captain, mate and officer of the watch all require Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts 200gtcertification to start.

Mediterranean flotilla skipper is a great option for newlyqualified Yachtmasters and charter skipper and mate/hostessis ideal for couples. Yacht delivery skippers can earn goodmoney and yacht instructors are much in demand at RYAsailing schools around the world.

Before you start training, prepare a CV/resume with thequalifications you expect to achieve. Apply for jobs advertisedon flyingfishonline.com and start networking as soon as youbegin your course.

Launch your career on yachts and superyachts

For more information about jobs and careers on yachts and superyachts check out flyingfishonline.com

Superyacht crew positions are well paid and you havevirtually no living expenses to worry about. The bigger theboat the better the starting salary: Deckhand: $30,000–45,000 a year, First mate: $48,000–80,000 a year, Captain: $60,000–150,000 a year.

Mediterranean flotilla work is less well paid but the lifestyleis great. You will earn £120–180 a week as a flotilla skipper.Delivery skippers earn $3,000–5,000 a month plus travelcosts to and from the delivery.

A couple working together on a busy charter boat in theCaribbean will have joint earnings in the range $50,000–80,000 a year, and you can expect to add to this with tips.

38 year old professional Rugby League player Gary Christie hung

up his boots and donned a pair of deckies when he signed up for

a Yachtmaster Traineeship with Flying Fish.

“I was looking to re-train for a career in the sailing industry and

wanted to combine the Yachtmaster qualification with a trip to Oz,

so Flying Fish provided the perfect solution.”

He sailed through his exams and the online careers service at

Flying Fish set up some interviews for him. He was offered several

jobs in the industry and went straight into work as a flotilla

skipper in the Sporades Islands, Greece.

Once the Med season was over Gary did a delivery to the

Caribbean then started checking the jobs at flyingfishonline.com.

The one that caught his eye was back in the UK, working for

Flying Fish no less. He went on to complete two years teaching

and racing out of Cowes which ‘was great fun with great people

and an important learning curve’.

Ready for a new challenge, and looking for some winter sunshine,

Gary decided to enter the luxury charter market and quickly

landed a job as skipper on a stunning Oyster 655 with girlfriend

and fellow Fish graduate, Dee Hudson.

“The greatest challenge was learning how to fix all the systems on

board a large luxury yacht. There’s no help when you are 1000

miles out to sea! You start off thinking you’re never going to learn

it all and then one day you realise that you know the yacht pretty

well. That’s a really fulfilling experience - it’s also when you decide

to go bigger and the learning curve starts all over again…”

Now he spends his summers in the Med and winters in the

Caribbean, and has plenty of time and some great locations to

indulge his great passion for kitesurfing.

“I’ve been working in the sailing industry now for four years and

have seen some beautiful places. My favourite cruising area is

Montenegro and Croatia because of the many secluded

anchorages and beautiful scenery.

“Another great aspect of this lifestyle is that you make a lot of

friends doing the same kind of thing and get to meet up in

different places all over the world. One friend Rupert, who is

actually an ex-student of mine from Flying Fish, keeps popping up

in the most unlikely of places. The funniest was when I walked in

to a bar in Antigua and he was playing the piano!”

The basics of windsurfing can be mastered in just a few hours.

After a day or two of good instruction you will be confident

in light winds. The buzz comes soon after, when you get the

board planing at high speed. Flying Fish guarantees to train you

up to a personal best and to show you how to become an

effective instructor.

Just you, your surf board and the wave. Once mastered, there is

nothing to equal surfing. To some it is the thrill of cutting back

into the barrel of a tubing wave. To others it is simply sitting

astride the board watching the dolphins and the sunrise with

the dawn patrol.

Scuba diving is one of those rare occupations in which you get

paid to do something you love in some of the most beautiful

places in the world. It’s a lifestyle most people can only dream

about - and Flying Fish will help you turn the dream into reality.

19 year old James Furnell from Chepstow spent his gap year onthe beach, getting paid to windsurf.

“After windsurfing on holiday I thought it would be fun tobecome an instructor during my gap year. The Flying Fish coursein Sydney was particularly appealing as it gave me the chance todo much more than just windsurf.

I had maybe four week’s windsurfing experience when I joinedthe course, although several people in my group had neverwindsurfed before and still passed. It doesn’t matter if you don’thave any experience, although I would recommend you try thesport first to make sure you like it!

Living in Manly was awesome. We were really close to the Fishcentre where we were training, it was only a 15 minute ferry rideto Sydney city centre and a short walk to one of the top surfingbeaches in Sydney. The people I was staying with were also reallycool, there was a great mix of people from gappers like me tofolk considering a career change after working in the City for afew years.

Windsurfing around Sydney Harbour was amazing. Learning todrive a powerboat past the Sydney Opera House and under SydneyHarbour Bridge and then having lunch opposite the Opera Houseon our own beach are moments I don't think I will ever forget.

Obviously the qualification was valuable to my CV and employabilitybut the experience of windsurfing and surfing every day with abrilliant group of people in one of the greatest cities in the worldhas to really be the most valuable thing I gained.

After I qualified, I applied for a job through the Flying Fishwebsite, and immediately received an email asking me to cometo an interview. I was offered the job with Mark Warner as awindsurfing instructor and given a choice of where I wanted to go.

Having spent a brilliant summer in Greece, I have come back tothe UK to read Economics at the University of Birmingham.

Next summer I plan to work in Egypt or Vass as a windsurfinginstructor - or start an internship in the City. I think theinternship may have to wait for another year!”

Bart Barczynski grew up in Toronto where he

started skiing at 15. He realised that the better

he got the more he enjoyed it and by the

time he entered university he was a qualified

instructor. After graduation Bart moved to

Whistler to work with Flying Fish training partner, YES Tours.

“I spent three seasons training new ski pros,” he explains, “and I

decided that this was to be my career.” Bart is now a Senior Level 4

Examiner and General Manager for Intrawest, the company that

employs all instructors at Whistler Blackcomb. As well as running

instructor courses, he is responsible for recruiting a team of 1,400 staff.

Flying Fish candidates who have a work visa are guaranteed an

interview to join Bart’s team - and every year many of them make

the grade.

Bart described what he looks for when he’s hiring. “Teaching is

first about enthusiasm,” he said, “and then it’s about technical

ability. The passion that you bring to your lessons will make or

break your career. You need a sense of humour, good stamina and

great communication skills.”

Bart insists that to be a success you must keep on learning yourself.

“The best advice I can give to anyone making a career on the

mountain is to keep your love of the sport alive. If you are always

aiming for the next level, that rubs off on your students. Your

enthusiasm is the best possible motivator, and that will make you

a really great coach.”

Many graduates stay on after the early-season courses to join the

professionals working for Whistler Mountain. Others work their way

across Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia and Spain before heading

to the USA and Japan or down to Australia and New Zealand.

Wages for ski and snowboard range from $11 an hour in

Whistler to $1,700 a month in Japan. In North America your

wage packet will be small but you can expect good tips. In

Europe you may be paid as little as ¤125 a week as a ski rep

for Mark Warner or Neilson (accommodation and food provided)

or ¤20–40 an hour working for a ski school.

Page 34: Flying Fish brochure

At the age of 32, Kate Gray decided she desperately needed acareer break. She worked in the marine industry in Scotlandand wanted to get a few more qualifications to further her career.

“After a lot of research, I decided to use Flying Fish to achievethese goals over a four month timeframe. However, when I sawthey also offered a Ski Instructor Course in Whistler throughtheir partnership with Yes Tours, I decided two more monthswouldn’t hurt!

I arrived in Vancouver in late November and had an amazingfirst day in the most spectacular mountains I’ve ever experienced.Under the watchful eyes of the instructors we were sized up interms of stance, dedication, attitude, flair, confidence andgear. And for our ability to shake off impressive face-plants,edge clips and wipe-outs without embarrassment …

Thanks to incredible teaching and support, we quickly foundwe had the confidence and skills to tackle not just thetechniques of skiing but more importantly the dynamics of teaching and presenting to groups of people.

Evening workshops and extra guided skiing days are alwaysavailable. The instructor exam weeks are tough but so worththe effort. When your name is called and you haul yourexhausted body up to receive your qualification at the endof the week – it’s the greatest feeling of pride.

There are lots of other activities too, such assnowmobiling, ziptrek, games nights and local walks.Creekside is a great base for the course with agood variety of bars, restaurants, shops andservices. The gondola takes you straight up to the slopes every morning without hugequeues – it really is a breathtaking commute!

The facilities and atmosphere are incrediblethroughout your time in Whistler and yousometimes have to pinch yourself (or one of your many bruises) to remind yourself youaren’t actually dreaming.

I look back on my time in Whistler as the best decision I havemade in years. I will definitely be back to do more in the future.”
