President’s Message By Sandy Sutton
Hello Everyone!
As we head into the fall months, our situation remains out of the normal, and we cannot predict when we will have our ordinary lives back. Who would have guessed that meeting several friends
for lunch, having Guild meetings at our school location, or vacationing in Europe, would be things we could not do in
September of 2020?
So let’s take advantage of the things that we can do! Please join our monthly Zoom Guild meetings. We are figuring out how to
do presentations, workshops, and Show & Tell.
More people are participating every month, and I encourage
everyone to join in. If you need help using the Zoom app, please contact someone on the Zoom committee to help you. Their contact information is included elsewhere in the newsletter, or
you can contact me directly at [email protected] regarding your specific issue. On meeting night, it is so
wonderful to see everyone’s smiling faces!
And our quilting world continues to adapt to these crazy times. If you have never been to the International Quilt Festival in
Houston, this is your year to see the wonderful quilts that are always displayed there. There will be a “virtual” show, meaning
you can go to their website and view the quilts. Other venues are doing the same. Some are even providing “virtual” vendors. We will provide information in the newsletter about these shows
when it becomes available.
In the meantime, continue completing UFO’s; you will be able to
share your work in the newsletter and at Show & Tell (directions on how to do that are enclosed in this newsletter). Get your Challenge finished – the deadline is quickly approaching! Drop
me a line letting me know how you are doing or how the Guild can be of more help to you in these crazy times. And most
importantly - STAY SAFE!
Your President,
Sandy Sutton

Coming Attractions—Program and Workshop Update:
For our September program we are excited to welcome Ann Shaw to speak to our
guild via Zoom. Ann's 34 years of experience as a college professor and her keen eye for design and color as well as a great sense of humor all combine to provide a
great program. Ann has an intuitive way of piecing in the style of Ruth Mc Dowell…. then she made this her own! This lecture presents an overview of Ann's approach to designing quilts and how differing choices can influence the look of a quilt. A
series of examples illustrate her design process, from creating a pattern to unusual fabric choices. She will be happy to answer questions from the audience during her
presentation.
Ann travels the globe giving lectures and teaching workshops including; Empty Spools Seminars (Asilomar), The Quilter's Hall of Fame & The Sister's Quilt Show. She's was also a featured guest of "The Quilt Show" hosted by Alex Anderson &
Ricky Tims.
Quilts have long been a part of Ann’s life. Fascinated by patchwork bed quilts when she was young, she came to discover the grace and elegance of Amish quilts, and
grew to admire the women who created America’s quilt traditions. Despite no sewing skills to speak of, Ann began making Cathedral Window quilts in the 1980s. She loved the idea that with folded muslin, bits of colorful patterned
fabric and a basic whip stitch one could create wonderful, elegant quilts. Eventually she began taking quilting classes and as her skill and passion for
quilting grew, she found enjoyment in seeing traditional blocks and quilting
techniques in different ways.
Ann was most intrigued by quilting that is derived from traditional piecing
techniques. She enjoys finding ways to stretch traditional blocks in ways that make them read as completely different patterns when combined a quilt. Ann has been
inspired by the work of Rhoda Cohen, Gwen Marston, Freddy Moran, Sylvia Einstein, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Cynthia England, Ruth McDowell and others
that offered her new insights into quilting.

October Program is Tracey Brookshier. Tracey's bold contemporary quilts, based on
pieced traditional blocks, have been featured in books and magazines in the US, the
UK, France, Australia and Japan.
She's a graduate of NCQC's Course on Judging Quilts and Wearable Art, Tracey has judged guild, county and state fair shows, in addition to Pacific International Quilt
Festival and Road to California. Tracey's lecture is;
Love Affair with Japan
Tracey will share her slides of the amazing Tokyo International Great Quilt Show. You'll see gorgeous quilts, and learn about Japanese quilting culture, which is very
different than ours. A trunk show of Tracey's quilts designed with Japanese and Asian-
inspired fabrics follows.

November Program is Rebecca Bryan of Bryan House Quilts. She loves to teach people how to make and design quilts. She is best known for the colorful and
geometric quilts she creates. Rebecca loves watching color and pattern come together in new and striking ways. Creating with fabric and color is somehow soothing and
energizing at the same time. Rebecca's trunk show and lecture will include Modern
Triangle Quilts.

Both the program and workshop for January are tentatively scheduled with Sylvia
Davis. More information when plans are confirmed.

Philanthropy
By Julia Renaud
On Behalf of the Philanthropy Committee
Hello Everyone! I sure hope you are doing ok with all the heat?
The Philanthropy Committee wants to thank everyone who came to our Non Sewing
Day at the Orange Quilt Bee, Wednesday August 19th. It was amazingly hot but again
our guild members continue to keep our philanthropy committee supplied with a huge
number of items: finished quilts, quilt tops, children pillowcases, adult pillowcases,
baby blankets and placemats.
Thank you to Lisa & Pebbles for letting our guild members use the sidewalk area
behind their shop to have our non-sew day.
Our next Non- Sewing Day is September 16th at 10am to 12 noon. If you would like
to stop by the OQB we will have prepared kits for you. Vicki Johns has been making so
many wonderful quilt kits for children and adults. Don’t miss out on making one!
There will also be pillow case kits, burpee kits, flannel baby blanket kits and quilt tops
to be quilted.
If you cannot come to our non-sewing day on August 19th, please contact Stephanie
Schneider at [email protected] for items that you have completed and would like us
to pick up or if you would like a kit or kits she will get them to you.
Every year we donate approx. 200 holiday placemats to the Irvine Senior Center.
Sharon Ludwig and Arlene Somerville have made some kits for the non-sew days for
you to pick up but if you can’t make it to our non-sew day they would love it if you
would make 2 placemats for the seniors from your stash. On the next page there will be
the instructions and pictures for making 2 different styles of placemats. We are closing
in on our goal of 200 placemats so I’m sure with your help we will make our goal in
September.
Please take care and please call Stephanie to get a philanthropy project or stop by the
OQB to get a kit.
Please remember to wear your mask at the OQB and we’ll see you on September
16th.
Thank you to Lisa and Pebble for the use of the
sewing room at The Orange Quilt Bee for our Philanthropy sew days.

Instructions for making Holiday Placemats for
the Irvine Senior Center
By Arlene Somerville and Sharon Ludwig
The Irvine Senior Center Meals on Wheels program needs Christmas placemats. Our goal is for approx.
200 placemats. We will have kits available at the OQB on August 19th from 10am to 12pm. If you cannot
make it to the OQB we are asking for you to make 2 placemats from your stash.
To make a placemat from your stash of Christmas fabric:
First, cut fabric for back and batting 13” x 19”. Finished size after trimming and binding should measure
12” x 18” or close to it!
Strip method: start with a piece of batting on top of the wrong side of backing fabric. Use any size
strips or combination of strips to sew with the flip & sew method, starting in center and working
outward.
Orphan Block Method: center on back & batting. Piece and frame with strips in a flip & sew method.
Front/back method: cut 2 pieces of fabric 13” x 19”, sandwich with batting, then machine quilt
together.
Binding: bind by machine or hand. Decorative stitch works well if sewing binding down on front.
If you have any questions or need Christmas fabric or batting – please contact Arlene Somerville:
Below you will find pictures of samples for the 3 methods to make a placemat.
Thank you for help.

Zoom
Zoom is a term that was once reserved for going fast or for
describing the motion of superheroes. Who knew we would be using the program
Zoom to communicate with one another!
If you didn’t have the opportunity to join in the Zoom Guild meeting on Monday,
August 10th, you missed a special treat! One of our members, Trudy Cleveland, gave
an outstanding presentation on photographing our quilts. Her presentation was full
of useful tips to help in taking successful pictures and how to store them for future
use and sharing.
A Zoom committee has been formed to assist you in joining and participating in the
next Zoom meeting. Please feel free to contact the committee if you have trouble
downloading the application.

Guild Banner Contest By Eileen Wintemute
YOUR BANNER HERE!
As you know by now, the guild is having a NEW BANNER CONTEST as part of our 35 year anniversary celebration. We are starting to get some people signed up for ban-
ners. Don’t miss out on your favorite season, holiday or month! Let us know now which you plan to make. Here are some ideas:
• Seasons – a different banner for each season would be nice • St. Valentine’s Day
• St. Patrick’s Day • Independence Day • Halloween
• Thanksgiving • December Holidays (ex: Christmas, Hanukkah)
Which one of these will you make?
Here are the contest details: • Make one or more Flying Geese Quilters Guild Banner(s).
• Each banner must be made to represent a season or a holiday. • One or more flying geese must be on the banner. • Banners must measure about 25”x 25”.
• The banner needs to have a 2 inch hanging sleeve and 2 - six inch long hang-ing tabs on the top.
• Banners must be quilted, i.e. three layers and stitched through all layers.
• Use whatever technique or fabric you wish. • At this time, entries are due at the January 2021 guild meeting.
• Winners will be selected by individuals yet to be named. • The number of winners will be based on the entries received. • Winners will receive the guild’s gratitude, admiration of your fellow guild
members and the pride that will come from seeing your creation displayed at guild events.
We are excited about the idea of having updated, more contemporary looking banners to represent our guild.
I’d love to hear from all of you out there making a banner. If you are making one, please send me an email (Eileen Wintemute, [email protected]) to let me know for what holiday or season.
Thanks and please stay safe and healthy! If you have banner related questions, please contact me (Eileen Wintemute, [email protected]) or Cindy Cooksey ([email protected]).

So, what have you been up to?
Diane Searer
Here are some pictures of a quilt I made.
The quilt is called “The Doctor Is In” and
I made it in 2
days & Mike
Qualls quilted it
with a double
heart motif in 1
day. It was for
a 14-year-old
softball team-
mate of my
granddaughter
who was hit by
a truck while
riding her bike.
She sustained
severe injuries
& was in ICU
for 7 days. She
is home now
but has a long
recovery ahead.
I thought this
cute hospital-themed fabric that I
bought years ago would make her smile.
My granddaughter & her dad (who had
been their softball coach at one time) de-
livered it to her when she got home.
1) A crocheted wrap I just finished.
2) I have been machine quilting a
fishing themed
art quilt. I just
finished the
machine
quilting. These
are two details
of the quilting.
The first is a
rocky area, and
the second is a
tree
overed hillside
with a distant
hill behind it.
Eileen Wintemute
I just finished a cute Mary Englebreit
wall hanging. I’ve had the panel for a
long time. I used fabrics from my stash
for borders, backing, & binding. I quilted
straight lines for the sashing & outer
border, free motion hearts for the inner
border, and clamshells for the panel
blocks. I didn’t do such a hot job on the
clamshells but it was good practice. The
quilting shows up well on the backing.
One more project done in my quest to
finish things!
