Music Manifesto Aspirations for Schools

• To deliver 36 hours of curriculum music making to all children each year (key stage 1 to key stage 3) which gives every child, including those with special needs, access to a wide range of high quality live music experiences and a sound foundation in general musicianship which contributes to the wider aims of the curriculum.

• To have a musical production / concert each year which gives every child the opportunity to take part during their time at school.

• To be a Singing School / a Sing Up award holder (key stage 1 and 2)

Music Manifesto Aspirations for Schools• To give every child the opportunity to learn to play a

musical instrument (key stage 2 upwards). Where charges are in place to have a remissions policy to enable access for all children, including free access for looked after children. For schools with pupils at key stage 2 this includes the one year ‘wider opportunities’ sustained tuition programme for all pupils as well as strategies for those wishing to continue after this first year

• Working with other local schools, the music service and other providers to provide directly or to signpost opportunities for singing or playing in groups in a wide variety of styles to enable every young musician to pursue their musical interests out of school time and to receive recognition and accreditation for their achievements in their e-portfolio. Music and performing arts specialist schools will, in addition, provide a leading role.

Music Manifesto Aspirations for Schools

• Working with other local schools, the music service and the local authority to pass on / receive details of pupils’ musical skills, knowledge and interests to enable them to build on their prior achievements when transferring schools.

• To identify and nurture the most talented young musicians across all genres and styles and to enable those that wish to have a pathway to a career in music.

• To support all staff involved in contributing to young people’s music making in school with high quality continuing professional development.

• To ensure the best use of teaching spaces for music, and to consider the development of accommodation for music when improving school buildings, including major projects through Building Schools for the Future.

• To harness the power of children and young people’s music making, both in and out of school to enable them to become:– Successful learners, who enjoy learning, make progress

and achieve– Confident individuals, who are able to live safe, healthy

and fulfilling lives– Responsible citizens, who make a positive contribution to

society
