The squad’s newcomers include 6-5 jun-ior guard Alante Fenner (transfer fromSavannah State University), 6-6 juniorforward Samson Nnaji (Indian River StateCollege), 6-5 junior swingman FilippBurnashov (Walters State CommunityCollege), 6-8 junior center Kenneth Jack-son (Brunswick Community College andMullins High product), 6-4 freshmanswingman Nick Talko (Lely High Schoolin Naples, Fla.), and 6-4 freshman guardBrandon Parker (Sumter High School).

“I am cautiously optimistic heading intothe season opener,” Edwards said. “I likeour perimeter players and I think we arepoised to have a good year defensively, but we are still trying to identify an in-side game.

“Our returning freshmen – now sopho-more – all played a lot last year and Ilook for them to provide scoring from theoutside. We have strength and muscleinside, but not an excess of height. Thatstrength should aid us in rebounding, butwe are still working on fundamentals inthe paint. The rebounding stats will be akey. Last year we funneled our defensethrough recording steals, but this yearwe want to concentrate on reboundingthe other team’s misses.

Along the same lines, we want to lowerour field goal percentage defense num-ber from 45 percent to the lower 40’s orupper 30’s. This concentration has paiddividends in the pre-season and now wewill see how it works when the regular-season lights are on.”

The Francis Marion University men’s bas-ketball team will open its 2015-16 cam-paign on Friday (Nov. 13) when the Patri-ots play host to Catawba College in theannual Peach Belt Conference-South At-lantic Conference Challenge.

The contest will tip-off at the unusual timeof 11:30 a.m. in the Smith University Cen-ter. Daily admission will be $8 for adultsand $5 for students. Francis Marion willface Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7:30 p.m.on Saturday.

FMU head coach Gary Edwards is enter-ing his 10th year at Francis Marion andhis 32nd year as a college head coachwith a 512-381 mark. For the 2015-16campaign, he welcomes back sixlettermen – including three starters – fromlast year’s 13-15 squad that that tied forfifth in the Peach Belt Conference’s EastDivision standings. Last year’s recordwas belied by the fact that eight confer-ence losses were by five points or less.

The returnees are led by 2015 PBC Fresh-man of the Year Detrek Browning, whoaveraged 17.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, and3.7 assists per game last season. In to-tal, four freshmen, all of whom return thisyear as sophomores, accounted for 51.4percent of the team’s offense in 2014-15.

A 6-2 guard, Browning was the second-leading freshmen scorer in NCAA DivisionII and ranked among the Top 10 in theconference for scoring, assists (103),steals (71), and free throw percentage(82.3). His theft total was a new Patriotsingle-season record.

Also returning is 6-4 sophomoreswingman Mike Davis Jr. (11.0 ppg, 3.2rpg), 6-7 sophomore forward JudahAlexander (5.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg), 6-1 sopho-more swingman A.J. Jackson (7.3 ppg,2.4 rpg), 6-3 senior forward David Jerome(4.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg), and 6-3 junior forwardAlex Bryant (0.9 ppg, 1.3 rpg). All of theaforementioned players started at leastseven contests last season.

The Patriots also re-gain the services of6-7 senior forward Mykel Harris. Harrisaveraged 8.3 points and 4.3 reboundingduring the 2013-14 season, but did notplay last year.

2015-16 SEASON OUTLOOK

Edwards said his probable starting line-up is still fluid, but Friday’s five may in-clude Browning and Davis in thebackcourt, Harris and Alexander at theforward spots, and Jackson in the post.Fenner, who averaged 9.2 points pergame last year for the Division I Tigers, will spell Browning at the point position, but may also see time alongside Brown-ing in the backcourt. Edwards also saidthat Jackson may be the squad’s topoutside shooter and will certainly seetime in a regular rotation as will Jeromeand Bryant.

Talko will miss this week’s contest ashe recovers from an injury, whileBurnashov and Nnaji are still waiting tobe cleared to play by the NCAA.Edwards is counting on all three for regu-lar contributions and said that Talko hasthe potential to follow Browning as theconference’s top freshman.

“Nick is a tough player who shoots theball well and most importantly under-stands how to play the game.” The coachalso commented on the defensive workdone by Parker in the pre-season andthat the local product will see some min-utes this season.

“One of the early keys to our successwill be to stay healthy. We have notmade any major changes in our ap-proach. We are progressing with the fun-damentals of basketball and will keepbuilding. This is a good group of youngmen and they have worked hard in thepre-season.”

Francis Marion’s 2015-16 schedule in-cludes 15 home dates, including five ofthe squad’s first eight contests being inthe Smith University Center. The Patri-ots open PBC play on Dec. 17 at theUniversity of Montevallo.

The slate also includes a Dec. 30 exhi-bition game with the South CarolinaGamecocks in Colonial Life Area.

FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY CAMPUS

Francis Marion University, founded in 1970, prides itself on providing astrong liberal arts education.

Named for Revolutionary War hero, General Francis Marion, who wasnicknamed the “Swamp Fox” for using the South Carolina terrain to out-fox the British, the University enrolls nearly 4,000 students. The Univer-sity offers a broad range of undergraduate degrees and a select numberof graduate programs in serving the needs of communities, businessesand industries of the Pee Dee region. Francis Marion is the only stateuniversity serving the Pee Dee region, and many of its students are the first in their families to go to college.

The campus features modern classroom buildings, laboratories and residencefacilities to provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for students. Thecampus also features a number of recreational facilities that are available for useby students, faculty, staff and alumni, and for use in intramural and intercollegiateathletic competition.

Most buildings have been constructedor renovated since 1970. Facilities areequipped with ramps, and those ofmore than one story are equipped withelevators. Though each building hasits own unique design, all are plannedfor architectural harmony.

The campus facilities include: Wallace House (President’s Home), J. HowardStokes Administration Building (above photo), Office Services Building, FacilitiesManagement/Campus Police Building, Walter Douglas Smith University Center,The Edward S.
