The Francis Marion University softball teamwill open its 2015 campaign on Sunday(Feb. 1) when the Patriots play host tothe University of Mount Olive for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch isset for 1 p.m. at the FMU Softball Sta-dium.

General admission for the doubleheaderis $8 for adults and $5 for students (FMUstudents are admitted free with ID).

Francis Marion welcomes back 10letterwinners, including four position start-ers and one starting pitcher, from its 2014squad that finished 23-28 and tied for sev-enth in the PBC standings.

“The girls have done a great job during thepreseason and scrimmage games prepar-ing for Sunday,” said 11th-year FMU headcoach Stacey Vallee. “Our offense shouldbe one of our strengths. We have hit theball all over the place during our scrim-mages. One of the things we havestressed this year is to increase our on-base percentage and the players have re-sponded. We are asking them to be pa-tience at the plate and only swing atstrikes.”

“All of that starts at the top of the line-up.Sophomore Briana Barzola and junior col-lege transfer Sharee Blomquist are our twomain options to bat first.” Barzola occu-pied the lead-off position 33 times as afreshman in 2014 and ended the year bat-ting .286 with 17 runs scored and six sto-len bases. She was also named an NFCAScholar-Athlete. Blomquist hit .298 andhelped Scottsdale Community College toan appearance in the NJCAA Division IInational championship tournament.

Vallee will look to a group of players –among them junior Chessie Miller, sopho-more Danielle Myers, and junior collegetransfers Shannan Lopez and Mykah Nevin– to drive in runs. Myers had a successfulfreshman campaign, batting .231 with ahomer and eight runs batted in, while Milleris a Lake View High School product thatplayed in 18 contests last year and hit.188.

Lopez gained 2014 All-Conference honorsat Daytona State College, while batting

.269 with six doubles, five homers, and27 RBIs. Nevin Hit .248 with 10 RBIs lastseason at Florida State College at Jack-sonville.

Also among the Patriots returnees is se-nior right-handed pitcher Katie Carnes, who posted a 10-12 mark last seasonwith a 3.42 earned run average. Sheowns a 25-18 career mark with 223strikeouts in 284 innings pitched.

In addition to Carnes, freshman left-hander Kaitlin Munda and junior collegetransfer Shelby Kelley are also expected

to see time on the mound. Munda wasan All-Region performer at Kettle RunHigh School in Virginia. Kelley played in39 games last season at Florida StateCollege at Jacksonville, hitting .316 withtwo home runs and 23 RBIs and regis-tering a 4-0 pitching record with a 3.25earned run average.

Vallee pointed at Munda as the one whowill likely get the starting nod in Sunday’sfirst game. “In softball, batters don’t seelefties as often, so you get an advantagewith the ball coming in at a different angle.Kaitlin has been very poised during thepreseason and scrimmages, not show-ing any freshman jitters.

“Overall, I feel we have more pitchingdepth which in turn provides more options. All three will log innings. In addition, allthree can hit.”

Behind the plate receiving the pitches,Vallee will look to a quartet of players.

“We have four players, any of whom couldend up donning the catching gear: juniorTaylor Barrineau (.186, 5 HRs, 16 RBIs),Nevin, Lopez, and Myers. All are battlinghard for playing time. It will come downto who is hitting the best.”

Also returning for FMU are senior thirdbaseman Shelby Mathews (.252, 1 HR,21 RBIs), senior outfielder T.J. Fain(.195), junior second baseman KristenEnglish, sophomore outfielder MikalaBarnhart (.239), and sophomore BailyGarin (.250).

As for her positions starters, Vallee gavea probable outlook. “Freshman MadisonLowe-Gardner, a product of SocasteeHigh School, will battle Kelley for thestarting nod at first base, with Blomquistand English working at second base.Miller and Blomquist will vie for time atshortstop, with Mathews and Nevin play-ing the hot corner. In addition to catch-ing, Lopez can play either corner infieldposition or second base.”

The starting outfield will likely consist ofBarzola, Fain, Barnhart, or freshman ToriGaskins (Carolina Academy product).Myers has also been working in the out-field as well.

“I am happy with where our defense is,as the players have worked hard in thatarea during the preseason,” Valleeadded.
