It is a privilege to present the FNCCI National Excellence Awards 2070 not simply as a celebration of success but also as recognition of the efforts of the business sector through extremely challenging times.

My term as the President of FNCCI has been one of the greatest learning experiences. Even as I have endeavoured to lead the apex business body of the country, I am humbled by what I get to learn and experience through the incredible efforts of entrepreneurs far and wide, of all sizes and scales, of different age groups, and of extraordinary dreams and achievements. I have had the opportunity to understand what it really means to be an entrepreneur, not just through my experiences but through the collective understanding and practices of the business community of our country from the faraway mountains and terai to the centre of commerce in the capital.

The challenges are many, but not insurmountable. It is a time when we cannot simply use our intelligence, but must rely on wisdom. Because every choice we make today as entrepreneurs, as leaders, as citizens and as a nation will determine the future of the generations ahead. We must make meaningful choices today - choices that will steer Nepal onto the course of economic progress and a better life for her citizens. We need to address with absolute emphasis the energy, education, healthcare, infrastructure and tourism sectors. We need to put into place policies that allow business to grow and create jobs and opportunities. This is a world of plenty, we must work so that no child lacks a decent education, no woman dies during childbirth, no person dies of hunger and poverty, and no youngster has to stand in a queue for days to leave his country for work opportunity on foreign lands.

At FNCCI, we know that this is a time to keep success and failure – both - in perspective. It is time to make tough decisions but with integrity. Though times have been tough, we are today tougher as a nation. FNCCI is committed to creating an enabling environment for better business practices. We need to connect, reach out and give back even as we create a culture of excellence.

The Awards tonight is a way of honoring people and companies that have achieved success in their vision and goals besides having contributed to economic development. I am privileged to be a part of this success tonight and express my gratitude to all the participants, the awards organizing committee, and my heartfelt congratulations to the winners.

FNCCI National Excellence Awards is a tribute to celebrate the spirit of companies and individuals who constantly strive to improve and deliver outstanding outputs in products, services, work systems, structures and policies.

As a developing nation, we have to prioritize our focus on qualitative rather quantitative and work towards building quality into our systems and organisational structures so that we can compete not just nationally, but internationally also.

SME’s play a critical role in the economic transformation of a nation hence we need to work on developing the capacity of SME’s and support them and get them into the economic mainstream. With this in mind, we have introduced National Excellence Awards in small and medium business categories to recognise and encourage them.

With a trade deficit of 1:8 ratio this year, we need to find immediate measures to move from an import based economy to a manufacturing based one, and the only way we can do that is to focus on quality and adopt Total Quality Management Systems for widespread acceptance, growth and sustainability of our industries.

The objective of the Awards is not only just to recognise the winners but it also adds tremendous value to the participating companies by providing feedback reports from professional assessors. Moreover the winners also share their best practices by which all participants benefit.

I believe that with hard work, dedication, commitment and consistently working towards a process of continuous improvement, we can strive for excellence enhancing capacity of our Nepalese Industries, Products and Services so that we become globally competitive.

How is FNCCI promoting business and industry of the country?The sole objective for establishing FNCCI is to unite the private sector of Nepal for promoting business and industry, in the country, which in turn leas to the growth of the economy and prosperity of the people. FNCCI has been playing an instrumental role in this area and will continue doing so. If you look into the past activities of FNCCI, you would find that FNCCI has led the private sector through thick and thin. During the period of insurgency, when every government institution was in a kind of standstill, members of the FNCCI were active in running the economy and promoting the private sector. FNCCI has always been very vocal for establishing peace and rule of law in the country which ultimately helps grow our economy and promotes business. FNCCI tries to bring a unified voice of the private sector. We have been trying to forge common understanding among various stakeholders on the basic policy issues. This is because the environment of the policy instability adversely affected the business as well as the nation. We have not been able to reap benefits from our potentials.Take for example, FNCCI brought the leaders of the major political parties on one stage and got commitment from them in adopting common minimum economic agenda in hydropower development. We have asked our leaders to give priority to the economic agenda and we are happy that they are heeding, albeit slowly, to our request. We believe that this is a step forward to economic prosperity and promoting private sector in Nepal.FNCCI has been cooperating with Government of Nepal as well as our development partners. Likewise, FNCCI has established relationships with Nation Chambers and Federation in various countries has been working of the development of bilateral economic ties.

Do the priorities and agenda of the Federation change with the change in the executive committee?The objectives and goals of the FNCCI are described in the FNCCI charter itself. They cannot change with the change of guards. FNCCI has three basic principles: protection of the rights and interests of the business operators, development of economy and partnerships with other stakeholders. Our vision of “Leading the nation’s economic progress” and mission of “Facilitating Nepalese business to become globally competitive” are based on these three principles. However, the means to achieve these two overarching goals might differ from one leader to another. The change in FNCCI leadership brings changes in the term and priority, but not in substance. In substance, we remain committed to the growth of the economy and prosperity of the people. We believe in free market and competition. Without economic progress, other issues and problems facing the present day, Nepal cannot be served. What in your opinion are the challenges for FNCCI?The biggest challenge for the FNCCI is to provide better services to its members and the nation. Being a national apex body we represent the cross section of business. The secretarial interests of various groups as well as individual interest of a firm and company may not coincide with the overall interest of the community. This sometimes creates fissures among various section of the community. The challenge for the FNCCI is to get into a common view on issues and get agreements from various sections of the business community. Today the business is getting more and more integrated with the world economy. The development not only within the country but outside affects us. Prepare the Nepali private sector capabilities to meet challenges created by development within the country and outside is in my view the biggest challenge faced by the Nepali economy. Within the country, the challenge is mostly associated with the political instability and the divisions seen in the Nepali society. We are a microcosm of the bigger Nepali society and cannot be expected to exhibit trends, which are directly opposite to the national trends. But getting to commonly agreed course of action should be our priority.

How do you think events like FNCCI National Excellence Awards contribute towards creating a healthy business environment?FNCCI National Excellence Awards was established to recognise the enterprises which put into practice the methods and procedures at par with global standards. Choosing winners of the Excellence Awards is an elaborate process involving objective criteria in various aspects of business. Only the enterprises which have excelled in different aspects can win. Such awards allow us to celebrate success and honour the performers. The participants of the award and other enterprises can take lessons from the winners. This award also provides a platform to share experiences. We believe the winners of this award will have one more reason for sticking to these beliefs. While for others, I believe, it will motivate them to further work towards these practices. In this way, I believe, this award will ensure healthy competition, and encourage all of us to work towards enhancing the competitive strength of Nepali business enterprises.

In a time when the country is facing economic downturn and a sluggish economy, what message does this award hope to convey?I disagree that the economy is not encouraging, but I am aware that the environment as a whole is not so positive. Despite difficulties around, the private sector is doing really well. There are many companies in Nepal following best practices. However, it’s true that industrialisation in Nepal is very young, and there is much to improve. With this award we will be providing free management consultation, and companies will get to learn how to be competitive, how to properly manage division of labour, and much more.

What kind of participation do you anticipate this year?More Nepali companies who want to learn rather than win.

What would be some of the highlights of this event?The major highlights are the new categories that we have added. The newly added segments are Best Brand - People’s Choice Award, Business Person of the Year - Editors’ Choice Award, NRN Business Person of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Young Achievers Awards for male and female entrants.

How does a competition like this drive excellence in your opinion? The competition is not going to be about winning and losing. During the process of assessment, participants will get an opportunity to learn and share best practices.

What is the level of transparency in the awards assessment process?One of the biggest strengths of the awards in my opinion is transparency and credibility. The assessment team comprises of local as well as international professionals. The assessment process will be of international standards and only those delivering excellence will make their way through the awards. The different aspects that will be evaluated for the business include production process, management, productivity, quality and market.

A firm believer in quality products, services, people and lifestyle, Dinesh P. Chapagain has four decades of engineering, managerial and academic experience in the public and private sector. He has also been recognised as a World Quality Leader from the World Council for Total Quality and Excellence in Education, and is a recipient of the Presidential Excellence Award from Asia Pacific Quality Organisation. Chapagin, Member of Jury of the FNCCI National Excellence Awards 2070 shares his views on the status of quality in business in Nepal and the parameters of evaluation for the awards in a short interview. How do you define quality?Quality cannot be defined in static terms. It keeps changing with the course of time. To keep it simple, quality has been defined as ‘conformance to standards’, ‘value for money’, ‘conformance to requirements’, ‘customer satisfaction’ or good ‘craftsmanship’. In my opinion, all these and many other definitions are derived from only one thought process or perspective. Defining and understanding quality with only one dimension is not enough. The definition of quality varies as per who defines it, and also where and when. In other words, consumers, producers, suppliers and the government as a regulator... they all define it differently. I always like to say “Quality is a journey and not a destination”.

How do you evaluate the quality of business management and operations in Nepal?Previously, we had a monopoly market, or there was really no competition in business. Business used to operate under the protection of the government. No competition means there is no question of quality, as customers need to accept whatever is served or produced. In this lack of competition, quality has no meaning. The breakthrough happened in 1985, with the beginning of the open market economy. To understand it we can see the example in the aviation and banking sectors. Only businesses who can deliver quality could survive and grow.In the beginning, the national flag carrier NAC was the only option. Later the presence of private airlines like Everest, Necon, Buddha, Yeti was felt in the aviation business. Now, not only corporations, but the public and even the government are slowly inclined towards working for quality. Likewise, customers of banking services are also starting to enjoy better service with the operation of private commercial banks. To keep it short, business management has entered into a competitive environment now, and the meaning of quality is being understood by corporations as well as by the public.

How do you think the events like FNCCI National Excellence Awards can help to enhance quality in business sector? FNCCI National Excellence Awards is a process of communicating the importance

of parameters required for excelling in performance of any business. That is why it is called National Excellence Award. The parameters are developed on the basis of Total Quality Management, which is globally accepted management practice for empowering business organisations. The awarding ceremony may be a one-time event, held once a year, but educating the parameters of business performance excellence is a continuous process. The business organisation which is awarded the FNCCI Excellence Award excels in all these parameters and shows that it is not only enhancing the quality of its products and/or services but also has got the potential to sustainably grow in the future and continuously satisfy all its stakeholders -customers, employees, shareholders and government.

What are the major requisites to be a winner? All nine parameters or components depicted in the FNCCI Excellence Award have equal importance. Generally business organisations think that market share growth and ROI are the only important parameters to be a successful business. However, from the TQM concept, to be a successful business in the short term as well as in the long term, one needs to strive to excel in several factors like leadership, vision and long term strategic plan, appropriate working plan, standard process and work systems, collection and utilisation of management information, employee empowerment and satisfaction, customers satisfaction and relationship and growth of market share and profit. All these issues are included as nine parameters in the FNCCI National Excellence Award and the winner will be judged based on their performance on these nine parameters. All parameters are equally important to win the award.

Globally the median age is 27 and the demands of this generation will shape the world to come. Technology and innovation are bringing the world closer, business attributes are increasingly similar across nations, brands are being created every day and will compete on global levels – we in Nepal must be prepared for new choices at every corner. We cannot be far behind. Above all its time to understand individual liberty and freedom. It’s time to adopt free markets and policies. It’s time to work with a better conscience and personal responsibility. It’s time to foster wealth and raise a toast to those who take risks, create jobs, are tenacious and grow by learning from success and failure – the entrepreneurs and business leaders of Nepal.

There’s no road map to prosperity, happiness, success. No great achievement, no love story, no genius was ever achieved through a formula… nor is any spectacular life ever quantifiable. Each journey is searingly and deeply personal and meaningful. The inconvenient truth is that you just have to blaze your own trail, map your own journey and live with courage because that is probably the only voice in your heart that will take you out of mediocrity and pattern. You are the architect of the world you live in. Nobody can ever live your life… not the closest person in your life can live your pain or your dream. You have to decide what matters to you the most! And have the courage to own your magic, own your journey.

The FNCCI National Excellence Awards is a tribute to this very spirit of entrepreneurship in the country. Being a part of this Awards has been a privilege and I wish it continued success in the days ahead. My Congratulations to the winners and I hope it marks the beginnings of amazing journeys ahead.

Bhaskar raj rajkarnikar, senior Vice-PresidentChallenges: Instability and poor business environment are the major challenges. There are various disputes at different levels because of which conducive environment is not being created. Power crisis, policalisation of labour issues are just few problems to talk about.

FNCCI’s role: FNCCI is working with political parties to ensure all the parties have a common economic agenda and clear economic vision. There are some wrong practices within the business sector too and we are looking at these issues as well. FNCCI is trying to make a difference in the economic

sectors at the policy level. We are facing a number of problems and we are trying to resolve it in different ways... by working in close coordination with the government or maintaining healthy relationship with labour unions. We are also aware that there are not much positive results as of now, but things are happening slowly. Once the government sets a minimum economic agenda, many things will get on the right track.

Bhawani rana, Vice PresidentChallenges: FNCCI, as the entire economy, have to deal with many challenges. First and foremost, the business environment of the country has not improved. The government policies can be best described as unstable. Businessmen face the existential challenge every day. The challenge for FNCCI is to keep the morale of its members high. FNCCI represents a wide spectrum of business and the interests of its members are diverse and often conflicting. So getting to a unified voice of the private sector is the most critical challenge for FNCCI.

We look for the overall growth of the economy and also for a favourable business climate. Some of our own members

may find that our views are not exactly the same. But I think when we work for the interest of the community at large, the difference of various groups will fade away, what we have to do is to communicate our policies and views properly.

FNCCI’s role: We at FNCCI believe in business with social responsibility. We are not in the business of promoting any individual interest, but promoting the nation’s business interest. We work for the growth of the overall pie. We believe in partnership and work together with the stakeholders of the economy.

FNCCI National Excellence Awards: The biggest challenge for each one of us who ventures into business is to be competitive. Every day the competition is becoming fiercer and those who cannot compete are washed away. I see participation in the Excellence Awards as an effective tool to identify your strengths as well as shortcomings. It also allows you to benchmark against others as well as your own performance. The Awards is a good tool of celebrating success. It can also be used to upgrade the technology and management process of enterprises. Awards which are conferred after a transparent selection process based on solid open criteria do help in the improvement of the business climate. It is a tool of encouraging new world-class processes and procedures among our enterprises. It helps to build our competitive strength.

PashuPati Murarka, Vice-President Challenges: Lack of industrial challenge is the major challenge in the business sector today. There is inconsistency in definition of various laws and orders, and labour issue is another challenge. FNCCI’s role: FNCCI is lobbying at different levels but frequent change in the government makes it very difficult. At least Secretaries at the Ministries should not be transferred in short-term.

PradeeP jung Pandey, Vice-PresidentChallenges: The major challenge is lack of proper policies and laws. As the political instability continues to linger, there is no business environment. There have been no huge investments in recent times and competitiveness is decreasing than in the past. Low productivity is also the other issue to be looked at. FNCCI’s role: FNCCI is working towards identifying news sectors and promoting it. Besides, we are also working to boost investor confidence and create a business friendly environment.

Could you tell us something about Nimbus and your journey as an entrepreneur?Nimbus is a young and growing organisation that started its journey by importing consumer goods such as confectionary from India, gradually shifting into agribusiness. In a short span of 15 years the company has diversified into different sectors like manufacturing animal feed, Poly woven fabrics, chemicals, LPG Bottling and distribution, Investment Banking, Advisory and Trading and Distribution. We aim to be NRs 10 Billion company by 2015 adhering to the organisation’s mission of providing quality, innovative, cost efficient products and service to the market through a commitment to excellence, a dedicated workforce and the adaptation of leading technologies.

The journey so far has been a potpourri of successes and failures. Learning from mistakes and never giving up, studying new technologies and embracing it and always stepping in my customers’ shoes and analysing their point of view are some of the lessons that kept me going throughout this journey as an entrepreneur.

This is the second year that Nimbus has been associated with the FNNCI National Excellence Awards as its title sponsor, how did you decide that an awards sponsorship was a good strategic decision for Nimbus?Nimbus shares FNCCI’s aim of promoting business and industry while protecting the rights and interests of business and industrial communities. What about this award appeals to you most?Association with the FNCCI National Excellence Awards is a very personal decision for me. It is an honour and an inspiration for us to be associated with a par excellent group like FNCCI, which has been able to successfully create its own brand among the private sector with numerous excellent organizations under its umbrella. What metrics or objectives will you measure to help determine if this sponsorship is successful?The total viewership of this award and the gradual increment in the viewership since the commencement of FNCCI National Excellence Awards in 2001 will help us determine the success of this sponsorship.

How does the success of this awards impact your brand?Success of this award would imply being able to reach out to a larger mass of our customers and associates of our brand. We would be happy to be known as a young, dynamic and a futuristic company looking to expand and excel. Hence, I believe that the triumph of this award will have a positive impact on our brand.

What does success mean to your personally? Success to me is being able to take risks and use innovative measures to convert challenges into opportunities for my company and me. I always strive to live up to the expectations of my customers and stakeholders, and eventually contribute towards the economic growth of my organisation.

Charu Chadha Charu Chadha is the Consultant for the FNCCI National Excellence Awards 2070 and has contributed to key elements of this award’s enhancement - conceptualization, marketing and publicity and execution. She is the Editor at MEDIA 9 which produces Business 360 and World of Women (WOW) magazines. A strong proponent of free markets and liberty, Charu has over 20 years of experience in journalism, marketing communications and events. She has also worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker working with national and international media. Charu has travelled extensively and is invited on speaking assignments at various liberal forums and think tank gatherings. She was also associated briefly with the hospitality industry in Nepal.

Preeti Rajeshwori ShahCoordinator from the FNCCI secretariat of the sixth FNCCI National Excellence Award, Preeti Rajeshwori Shah, has been working as an officer with FNCCI since May 2012. Her area of responsibility includes coordinating and organising meetings, delegations and major events of FNCCI. She also assists with research including planning, coordinating and developing business plans for SMEs. Preeti has done her Master’s of Management in Tourism and Hospitality from Mahidol University International College, Thailand. She is also a lecturer at Silver Mountain School of Hotel Management. Prof. Dinesh P. ChapagainIndustrial Engineer by profession, Dinesh P. Chapagain is a firm believer of quality for overall performance excellence of nation, society, organisation and individual. After doing his first degree in Physics in Nepal, he did Mechanical Engineering in India, Masters degree in Industrial Engineering and Management in Thailand and Doctoral research in Productivity, Organisational Culture and Values in India. After serving two decades in public and private sector industries, from floor level engineer to Chief Executive Officer, he took another journey spanning two decades in academia providing consultancies, conducting studies and researches on various areas related to quality, productivity and competitiveness. He retired as a Professor of Management and Dean of the School of Engineering in Kathmandu University, Nepal. He has presented more than two dozen research papers on quality and productivity at various international conferences in 15 countries worldwide. Prof. Chapagain has authored, edited and translated nine books, two in English and seven in the Nepali language, all related to quality and productivity. Recipient of international awards like World Quality Leader award and Asia Pacific Quality Organisation’s Presidential Excellence award, Prof. Chapagain had been bestowed with national medals like TU Vice Chancellor Medal, Mahendra Vidya Bhusan and Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu. He is a life member of Nepal Engineers Association and Management Association of Nepal. Rameshwor KhanalRameshor Khanal is Professor at SAIM College where he teaches Accounting and Business Environment. Before taking up teaching as a full-time profession, he served the Nepal Government for nearly 31 years in a distinct career graph. He retired from government service in the position of Finance Secretary. He is widely involved in a number of social development and investment promotion activities particularly focusing on the upliftment of standards of public education and public library system, improving access to finance in rural areas, private equity fund administration, etc. He graduated from the Tribhuvan University and is a certified management accountant.

Prof. Subas KCProf. Subas KC is Dean of Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) for the last eight years, prior to which he was Director of Centre for Management Innovation (CEMI) at Nepal Administrative Staff College (NASC). Spanning over a period of three and a half decades, his career has involved professional services in the field of management development as a management educator, trainer, consultant and researcher. Roshan RathiRoshan Rathi, a Master in Business Administration by qualification from IIMM Pune (India), is a General Manager at London Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Qualifications (Nepal) and Managing Director at Skills to Earn Pvt. Ltd. Other than his full time profession he is also associated with various management colleges as adjunct faculty in teaching various management subjects. Currently he is pursuing his PhD. in Business Administration with major in Strategy and Innovation from Atlantic International University, Hawaii (USA). His passion for his country has brought him back to Nepal despite lucrative international opportunities. For Roshan, life without passion is meaningless. He likes to interact and train youth and helps them in developing their careers. He, thus, shares a keen interest in the education sector. He believes in establishing organisations which are system driven and focussed on doing quality business. Arun SharmaArun Sharma is presently a visiting faculty with the Kathmandu University of Management. Manohar B. ShresthaManohar B. Shrestha is a Civil/Structural Engineer with training in feasibility study, project appraisal and management development. Krishna Gyawali, Secretary, Ministry of IndustryWhat are the key challenges facing the economy?The key challenges being faced by the economy are the lack of policy implementation capability of the government and also the lack of policy implementation environment that exists outside of the government. Our policies are normally good, considered even “progressive” by the South Asian standards, but the government’s capability to implement them is weak. Also, the environment in which those policies are expected to be implemented is not supportive and conducive. This largely denotes the lack of supportive political stability and good governance in the country. Besides, some structural bottlenecks like the lack of basic infrastructural facilities such as energy, road, telecommunication, skilled human resources and knowledge base are also hindering the fast economic growth.

How is the government helping to address these issues? The government is trying to address these issues by focusing on the issues that can be resolved even amidst these trying circumstances such as improving the management systems in government, strengthening the systems capability, reforming the attitude and behavior of the government bureaucrats, etc. Also, it has also been making efforts to build a good rapport with the private sector to win their trust and support as they are the corollaries of government for ensuring economic growth. The government has been revising or re-drafting new laws as necessary, reforming policies, revitalising its institutions and re-crafting the employees’ attitude in favour of positive and optimistic thinking.

Pramila Acharya RijalChairperson, SAARC Chamber Women Entrepreneurs Council How can women entrepreneurship be enhanced through efforts of organisations like FNCCI?An organisation like FNCCI has a crucial role to play in enhancing women entrepreneurship. The first thing is that as an organisation it should have more representation of women. The representation has increased than in the past but still it is not enough. Secondly, the Federation should include business issues related to women and SMEs while lobbying with the government.

Samir Thapa, President , NYEFWhat are the resources necessary to promote youth entrepreneurship?The first thing is easy access to finance and the second one is proper working environment to develop the business of young entrepreneurs in terms of HR management, market, sustainability among others. If young entrepreneurs get easy access to finance and proper environment, it can uplift the existing business into next level of expertise.

What are the key areas NYEF is addressing in your tenure?Our key objective is to promote positive business thinking. At present we are working on three major projects. “Made In Nepal” campaign has already been a success and now we are working to promote Nepali products internationally by creating a larger market. We are taking this expo to the international level and at present we plans to take it to Malayasia and Qatar.

The other project is Young Entrepreneurs Summit and we are organising the summit on the SAARC level this year, where we expect the participation of around 400 youths with at least 10-15 from each SAARC member country. In next phase, we are organising the summit on the Asia Pacific level.

One of the biggest projects of NYEF is Nepal Young Business Forum (NYBF) under which we promote entrepreneurship development of under privileged and disadvantaged youth by developing their business ideas into viable enterprises. We are supporting 60 applicants this year and at present we are processing loans and appointing mentors for respective business ideas of the applicants.

IntroductionThe Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) instituted the FNCCI National Excellence Awards for the first time in the year 2001. The award is meant to promote performance excellence for sustainable growth and development of an institution. Besides recognising business excellence, the award is also meant to increase the understanding of the elements critical to attain the same. This is accomplished by promoting information sharing (strategies, managemet practices, etc) of successful performers and the benefits derived thereof.

The award is based on a comprehensive model focusing on the organistional practices and performances under nine different criteria, which are further divided into 31 sub-criteria. The award is not product or service specific. It rather recognises excellence in product/delivery standard through effective and well-defined work systems.

As the time changes, FNCCI believes thatthe importance of the Awards has increased.Domestic industries and SMEs should be encouraged through the award.Categorisation can be made on the basis of the nature of industries. The importance of human resources and customer service has increased.

In 2010, FNCCI decided to institute not only the FNCCI National Excellence Award but also FNCCI People Excellence and FNCCI Service Excellence awards. People Excellence Award recognises organisations that have excelled in developing

employees for business success. Service Excellence is based on a comprehensive model focusing on the organisational practices and performances under nine different criteria, which are further divided into 31 sub criteria.

The three type of core awards are:FNCCI National Excellence Award FNCCI People Excellence Award FNCCI Service Excellence Award

ParticipantsAny enterprise, registered and operating in Nepal is eligible to apply for the awards.

Mode of applicationEnterprises are required to submit an application form along with questionnaire (with appropriate supportive documents) in order to establish eligibility for the award. Site visit of eligible enterprises will be conducted to inspect and confirm the practices and results n responses to the award criteria for national excellences.

criteria For Fncci excellenceThe criteria for National Excellence provide an organisation with an integrated, result-oriented framework for implementing and assessing management practices and the result it is achieving. These criteria are much more than a set of rules for an award contest. The criteria are developed from the insights of organisations that are working to achieve organisational quality and business excellence. They represent valid practices for achieving business excellences.

The nine criteria categories are listed to show that all organisation actions should lead to excellence with organisational results and try to signify the relationship among categories:

Expectations from an award recipientAward recipients are required o share information on their successful performance, best practices and quality strategies with other Nepalese organisations. Recipients are not required to share proprietary information, even if such information was part of the award application.

Benefit of participation in the contestEach applicant with site visit gains an outside perspective on its business based on review by a team of professional experts. The results of this review are given in a feedback report, outlining strength and area for improvement based on the award criteria. Feedback reports may be used by companies as part of their strategic planning processes to focus on their customers and to improve productivity as well as to help energise and guide their organisational improvement programs.

Non-Disclosure and confidentialityNames of applicants, comments and scoring information developed during review of applications are regarded as proprietary by FNCCI and are kept confidential. Such information will be available only to those individuals directly involved in the assessment and administrative process. FNCCI will not release information on successful strategies of award recipients and other applicants without the written consent of the applicant. FNCCI will take reasonable action to ensure that applications and information and information therein are treated in strict confidence. However, FNCCI cannot be held responsible for any loss of confidentiality to a third party. PERFORMANCE 1: Take FiveComposer: Paul Desmond

Take Five is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed and made famous by the Dave Brubeck Quartert. This piece became one of the group’s best records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived. While Take Five is not the first jazz composition to use this meter, it is one of the first to achieve mainstream significance.

This evening’s time signature is in 5 and includes an improvisation section for the saxophone and keys in the middle.

Pranav Rajouria (18): Recently graduated from Woodstock School, Mussoorie. Taking a gap year before heading for undergraduate studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Played alto saxophone for the Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, Advanced Band, Advanced Orchestra, and Marching Band of the school. Has performed in and around Mussoorie, including Dehradun, as well as participating in Jazzmandu 2010.

Yuvash Vaidya (22): Started out learning the keyboards through performing in the underground scene. Learned under scholarship for a year at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory under Marcus Dengate. Has played with several groups like Con-Fusion, The SAY Project, What the Funk We'r Soul'D Out, Street Life Collective. Won the Jazzmandu Jazz for the Next Generation 2012 with Con-Fusion and continues to perform with them.

PERFORMANCE 2: ExcellenceIn this set, Salil Subedi in collaboration with Nikhil Tuladhar are performing an original musical piece dedicated for the event’s theme –excellence. Salil will draw us deep into the nature where the beginning of everything takes place. From the nature across its amazing journey of sound, awakens the human consciousness. The human takes his first steps from the wild into the civilized. Here at the border line of nature and culture, the human comes in contact with his dreams. The dreams find their beat. And in the rhythm of attaining this dream, the dreamer now embarks on a challenging journey ahead. This evening is presented the story in music of achievers, of dreams painted with the sound of the Didgeridoo, Murchungna, Djembe and other colourful instruments

Salil Subedi introduced the Didgeridoo in the mainstream Nepali Fusion Music genre over a decade ago. He further pioneered the application of this deep vibrating thousand years old wind instrument into live theatre and performance art genre. From the

remote mountains and Terai villages of Nepal to the Alps of Europe; from the far-flung Giant Steeps of Mongolia and along the Kailash Manasarovar plateau to the flood plains of Ganges and Brahmaputra, his talent continues to be invited all over the world. This artist who is also a writer, a thinker,

and a visual and performance culture worker brings us to reason how a simple creative tool can bring about a slow and steady wave of positive change.

Browsing through Salil’s work recollected in his dream project ‘Earthbeat Live’ reflects this motivating idea.

To unlearn the ‘given knowledge’ from the past and relearn the knowledge from the locals, from the nature, from the phenomenon and the surrounding around us is what Salil says is his key to unlock the path to such a creative and challenging journey.

Nikhil Tuladhar is a fame whose talent on the Rhythm and Percussion has not only been tasted and enjoyed by the thousands of roaring audiences but equally been absorbed and woven into the creative lives of the hundreds of students that he has made ready to ‘beat the big beat’ to the world! For more than a decade, Nikhil has embossed his name in the many musical events and albums transforming his art and science of rhythm through multiple genres of music that includes the Fusion, Jazz, Rock and to the Nepali audience’s delight, the Nepal Adhunik as well.

Nikhil bears with him a full sense of humor and that’s what gives him the full energy to keep connected to the world along with his music. Indeed, he has travelled the world across the continents spreading the existence of a fine quality and talent of a Nepali musician. Nikhil has played with almost all known musicians and bands at home and abroad and continues to make international musical collaborations. In recent times he is an active member of Upendra and Friends and Paleti ensemble and his involvement includes that with Trikaal, Rock Sitar, Nepathya, among many others.
