JO Software Engineering GmbH is a German vendor of professional software
systems for the administration of complex wide area, metropolitan area and access
networks. The company now has over 25 years' experience in the network
sector and since the end of 1998 has been concentrating on the development,
sales and marketing of cableScout®.
cableScout® is a documentation and information platform that has been developed
specifically for the management of telecommunications networks. It enables
all types of fibre optic and copper networks to be documented and efficiently
managed both on a physical, logical and virtual level, in other words, from the geo-
referenced position to the signal layer. cableScout® supports all relevant
technologies in the transmission and access sectors including SDH, PDH, xWDM,
xPON, Ethernet/IP, xDSL and FTTx.
It enables complete networks, together with all their associated buildings,
trenches, ducts, manholes, cables, connections, active and passive
components, signals and services, terminal devices, connectors and
sockets to be displayed.
Great emphasis is placed here on the geo-referenced, correct positioning,
scale and realistic representation of the objects, which is achieved both by a position-
related object list and by mapping the relationship of the objects relative to one another
(e.g.: cable>duct>trench).
Attributes and documents can be assigned arbitrarily to each of these objects. For example,
contracts, OTDR reports and invoicing information can be stored for every single fibre
in the network.

cableScout® is a modular system that can be equipped with its many functional modules
making it customisable to the requirements of each individual company.
The individual modules do not function alongside each other or even independently but their
combined strength lies in their ability to integrate and interoperate with each other.
Therefore all graphics including the geo-schematics, distributor view, connection view and
schematic plan are interconnected and update each other in background mode.
This seamless interaction between geographic, functional and logical information ensures a
comprehensive overview of the overall actual situation of the network at all times.
future-oriented
In order to the support users in their management of complex structures, cableScout® has a
wide range of network-specific and automated functions, graphs, reports and printouts.
These include route search via different transmission technologies, auto-routing of signals,
generation of work orders for technicians and installers, descriptive capacity and
utilisation analyses, end-to-end reporting of signals/routes, detailed customer reports and
multiple planning options for the physical and logical network level.
One specific feature to be highlighted in this context is the automated FTTx planning. This
unique functionality enables full and customised FTTH networks from POP/street
cabinet through to residential OTOs to be planned within a very short period and set up
automatically within the system.
It also issues itemised financial costings, descriptive work orders, building instructions,
splicing plans plus materials and/or parts lists. The planning data is easily transferred to the
active network by pressing the relevant key.

All network-related information is held centrally in a high-performance Oracle
Database and is then available for retrieval by the planning, construction, operations,
project management and financial control teams. The laborious browsing and editing
of documents in order to access the required information is no longer necessary
which very significantly reduces overall response time to queries. This delivers
a significant improvement in service quality and network availability is optimised –
both factors which ultimately have a positive effect on customer satisfaction.
However, the most important benefits of cableScout® from a cost perspective are
that existing network resources can be used more efficiently, operating costs can
be reduced over the long-term, unnecessary new investments can be avoided and
a faster system ROI can be ensured.
The unique selling point (USP) of cableScout® is that the software has been
developed in-house as bespoke software with a very high-performance graphics
functionality. Therefore there is no need to use complicated graphics programmes
such as AutoCAD, Visio, or GIS to display the full network. This independence
provides the user with crucial benefits in terms of functionality, learnability, ease
of use, operating costs and system speed.
The open database structure also enables a smooth integration into an existing
IT environment. For instance, Cable-Scout ® has interfaces to leading GIS systems
including ESRI, Smallworld, Bentley, Intergraph and Autodesk and can exchange
data or cards with them accordingly. A very interesting new interface to the
reflector system of FOC GmbH enables the monitoring of FTTx-/PON structures
from the main office directly to the ONT of the customer.
trust
We have over 250 German and international customers. Our customers can be found
amongst companies of all sizes and industry sectors. They include telecommunica-
tions companies (service providers/carriers), public utilities, energy, gas, oil and water
providers, cable-TV providers, airports, mining companies, highway administrations
and engineering practices.
Our reference sites include Vattenfall Europe Netcom, UPC Austria, E.on Westfalen-
Weser, EAG Oberösterreich, Schweizer UPC, Cablecom, Sankt Galler Stadtwerke,
EW Luzern, ESWE, VSEnet, Luxconnect, Tennet, Wingas, Stadtwerke Bremen,
Wasserwerke Zug, Überlandwerke Coburg, Stadtwerke Augsburg, LEWTelnet and
Schweizer Gas & Com.
Vattenfall Europe Netcom in Berlin has been a cableScout® user for many years.
The company administers a very large mixed network and complex SDH/PDH technology with cableScout®
WINGAS in Kassel has been using cableScout® since 2001 and administers about 8,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable in cableScout®.
Schweizer Cablecom has been a customer since 2004 and administers several million fibres with cableScout®.
You have read about some of the functions and benefits of cableScout® in this brochure.
However you will get the best impression of this software in a live presentation. This
could be held initially over the internet or at your company premises.
We will present all the product highlights and give detailed answers to your questions and
your requirements. Of course we will be pleased to advise you on the best possible
use and integration of our management system. We look forward to hearing from you.
