We hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing break and are looking forward to the term ahead as much as we are. We welcome back Ms Debbie Taylor who has been on Long Service Leave for all of last term and our new teacher, Mrs Alison Hawkesford, who will be teaching Digital Technologies. Mrs Hawkesford comes to us from Hillcrest Primary School and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area and we are very happy to welcome her to the Mount Lawley community. I was privileged to attend the World Edulead Conference in Singapore for the first week of the holidays. Over 34 countries were represented and I met and spoke with many fantastic educators from across the globe. I participated in two masterclasses, one with Michael Fullan, the worldwide authority on educational reform and Carol Ann Tomlinson, the world expert on Differentiation and I learned so much and was completely inspired! What was really terrific was the affirmation that our school is certainly moving in the right direction with our whole school approach to learning through the differentiated process and incorporating play and investigations in the early years of schooling. There is certainly the research and the practice to support what we are doing as a school and we will continue to build on our capacity to drive school improvement and the holistic education of every child. I was also fortunate to meet and listen to Pasi Sahlberg, Lane Clark, Howie Knoff, and Tracey Takuhoma-Espinosa who all spoke about transforming and transcending education using thinking tools, reading ‘big’ and ‘small’ data and integrating brain based research and neuroscience. I dragged back a suitcase full of books and notebooks filled with new ideas and have been doing a lot of thinking and reflecting on not only education at Mount Lawley Primary School but also the education system as a whole. Lots of great food for thought! It was great to return for our school development day and work with the staff to further our learning around Differentiation and look at ways to further engage students. We are so lucky to have staff who are so motivated to work together and share their knowledge and expertise with each other and who are seeing the positive changes that differentiation and growth mindset is having on their students and in their classes. This journey is a long one, with both excitement and challenge in equal measure. It involves complex learning and planning with staff for the diverse range of students in our school. It was exciting to listen to the discussions and the solutions to some of the complexities staff shared with each other and the commitment to work on each new step along the journey. be based at Mount Lawley Primary School, with teachers in their classrooms and the Kindy teachers in the undercover area. The ten-minute interview will be kept strictly to time so that every parent has the opportunity to meet with the teacher and there will be a half hour break for teachers from 6pm-6.30pm before continuing to the end of the evening. We hope you will make the most of this opportunity to meet with the teacher and discuss the semester report. NAPLAN begins in Week 3 (14 May) for Years 3 and 5 and will go over a two-week period this year. The test is mostly online and we feel well prepared with our infrastructure to ensure the process goes smoothly. The Year 3 Writing is the only element that is on paper this year. With the new online NAPLAN, the questions are tailored to each individual student. As they complete NAPLAN, the test adjusts itself to suit how the child is answering the questions. The test also comes with ‘tools’ the students can manipulate, giving the test more of a familiar ‘game’ feel. The students have had a practice last term with the online test, as they did last year and are familiar with how it works. Please note, that as a school, we look at NAPLAN as data that informs our planning and practice. We don’t “teach to the test” as all teachers are teaching the appropriate curriculum in their classes, which covers the content and skills that NAPLAN measures. We don’t put the students under pressure to “perform” in any other way, other than their personal best and we don’t make it a big deal for the students. At this time of the year, the media will beg in to focus on NAPLAN and all the things associated with it – both the positive and the negative. We don’t focus on media reports, rather we focus on the students completing the test to the best of their ability, just as they would on any other assessment that their teacher would give to them. We anticipate the students will treat this as just another part of their school day and as such, we intend for NAPLAN to be as free from external pressure as we can make it. You can support this at home by keeping regular routines, ensuring they are sleeping well and coming to school after a breakfast that will help them sustain energy levels. We have some lovely events coming up this term – with some classes going out of the school on excursions, incursions for our upper primary students, our Performing Arts show, the Night of Eminence, Book Fair, class assemblies and the Kindy students sharing a special Mother’s Day experience next week with their families. Our in-school clubs will continue, along with before and after school activities. As always, I invite you to come and see me if you have any queries or concerns and my door is always open. Happy Term 2 everyone! See you in the playground.

~Ms Cavelle Monck, Principal

After school play 3.45pm

After school play in the playground is a lovely way to spend time with your friends and family and we welcome you to make use of the school grounds after school. However, with the weather cooling down and with this being a reporting term for teachers, we are going to finish all play at 3.45pm with the gates closing at this time. We would ask that you vacate the school to allow teachers to have quiet time to plan and write reports. A hand bell will sound at 3.45pm as a gentle way to remind you to finish your play and either move on to another park or go home. This will begin as of next Monday 6 May. Please support us with this as a school community. Parents are expected to fully supervise your child/ren after school and the students still need to abide by our school rules even after hours. They include:

Walk on grey, run on green

Sports equipment from the sports shed or surrounding classrooms is not to be used after school

The barrels in the Pre-primary play area must remain there

The Pre-primary equipment that is in the baskets outside the classrooms must not be used

Bikes/scooters/skateboards must not be ridden inside the school grounds Please note, students are allowed to climb the trees during recess and lunch times when they are supervised by staff. If your child climbs the trees after school, it is up to you as the parents to supervise how high they go and how they climb up and down. Thank you.

Dogs

A reminder that dogs are not allowed on the school site, whether they are on a leash or not and regardless of size. This week some of our junior primary students walked through dog poo in the playground, which was distressing for them and impacted on their school day. Under the Education Act dogs are not allowed on site unless they are a therapy or assistance dog.

Traffic

As we return to another term, please remember to follow the rules and the law regarding traffic movement and parking. PLEASE use the paths AROUND the school rather than walking through either the staff carpark at the front or back of the school. Also a reminder to not park on our neighbours’ lawns, especially on Second Avenue. Please don’t park in the “no parking” areas around the school, especially in the drive way of the Centenary Gates. Please park in the correct carparks or at Hamer Park to avoid parking fines and added stress for our residents. Please remember your manners and how we speak to our residents when parking. If you park on their verges or in their driveways, they have every right to politely ask you to refrain from doing so. It is very distressing to hear from our local residents that they are being sworn at or intimidated by members of our school community. We all know the pressures of life, and we are all busy and often need to be at different places before and after school however, there is no good reason for treating our residents poorly and as a school community we need to take responsibility for our actions. We look forward to hearing from our traffic committee soon as to some of the measures we will be introducing to assist with traffic movement; in the meantime, please do the right thing.

Night of Eminence

On Wednesday May 22 (Week 4), the Extension students will be sharing a Night of Eminence with the school community from 5.30pm-7pm in the undercover area. The community is invited to come and take a look at over 50 stalls sharing information about a range of eminent people who have made interesting and incredible contributions to the world. The students have spent ten weeks researching and learning about an eminent person of their choice and they are very keen to share what they have learned with you. It would be lovely to see the whole community come and support the learning of the students and we look forward to seeing you there!
