The region increases in importance, with commodity flows moving north and south via this extensive waterway that ends in Romania at one of Europe’s largest ports: Constanta on the Black Sea. THE SGS CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT NEWSLETTERFOCUS ON DANUBE AN SGS CORPORATE NEWSLETTER FOR AGRICULTURAL SERVICES

    Dear Customer,

For the last 5 years SGS has run a Focus on the Danube campaign. The region increases in importance, with commodity flows moving north and south via this extensive waterway that ends in Romania at one of Europe’s largest ports: Constanta on the Black Sea. We have also seen increasing investment in cargo handling facilities and logistics within the region, and large companies gearing up to fully exploit the potential of these expanding agricultural production countries. Cargo destinations are also increasingly diver-se, with goods originating in the region being shipped as far afield as Asia and South America in recent times.

Having established operations along the Danube many years ago, SGS has de-veloped greater coordination between the countries more recently. In addition, we have made increasing investments in laboratory testing facilities, on-site grading and sampling capabilities. Today, our Agricultural Services Team covering the Danube consists of more than 500 full-time employees and we are the only company to have fully capable, accredi-ted testing laboratories in each country. Recent additions to our services include GMO testing and additional capacity for mycotoxins and pesticide residue ana-lysis. While this region has substantial activity and great potential, there are also many risks that you can avoid with fast state of the art testing locally.

In this issue, we introduce you to our industry-leading teams on the Danube and confirm our readiness to help you manage the risks you face along this complex and developing supply chain.

    VESELKA PASHOVA Laboratory Manager

SGS Bulgaria is developing express mycotoxins testing services to help bring sampling, testing and analysis out of laboratory and into the field.

Grain crops and cargoes need to be verified as free from contamination with mycotoxins before they can be sent to their destination markets. Currently, the most effective and reliable testing methods involve sampling on-site, delivery to a laboratory and subsequent release of the results. This can often take two days or more.

On-site sampling and analysis is much faster, more cost effective and reduces the risk of loading and transporting contaminated cargoes. The new express testing service is developed on the basis of strip test kits with two key advantages:

    • Test kits can be handled at room temperature. This makes the test robust and reduces the inaccuracy of results caused by kit temperature instability

    • Extraction is performed in a nature-friendly manner using water alone. There is no need for special disposal methods for liquid chemicals

Testing can be conducted at silos or ports. The process keeps the representativeness of a 10 kg sample, but reduces the testing time for one mycotoxin to as little as 15 minutes. SGS inspectors can directly, on-site, identify the sampled railcars, barges, trucks etc. as being risky, or not, with respect to mycotoxin concentration. Any risky ones should be further analysed by approved laboratory methods.

To help you determine the quality of your products and ensure their marke-tability, SGS Bulgaria has invested in increasing its sample testing capacity and introducing new services.

ISO 17025 accredited, our laboratory in Varna is also a FOSFA analyst and a GAFTA analyst. Operating seven days a week, the lab gives you constant access to a range of services that will satisfy your requirements.

    SHORTEST ANALYTICAL TIME

Our investment during 2015 in new equipment for sample preparation and chromatographic measurement has boosted our capacity to perform express testing of dioxins, mycotoxins and pesticides.

In fact, we’ve doubled the number of tests performed within the shortest time limits, and can perform complete GMO testing within two days. Such fast turnarounds are extremely important in this competitive market featuring short-distance cargo transfers.

    LARGEST SCOPE OF GMO TESTING

Most labs continue to use outdated methods and, as a result, your products may fail to meet the requirements on GMO traceability and labelling. This is particularly a concern with soya testing, where traditional screening by the above genetic elements will detect only 55 % of the EU authorised parental events.

SGS Varna laboratory goes beyond and provides complete screening for all the EU-approved (and all the pending) events of GM soya, corn, and rapeseed.

The laboratory is approved by the Bul-garian Food Agency to perform testing of feed and food. We also achieve excellent results in the proficiency tests organised for the European Network of GMO laboratories and in the proficiency tests of the US Department of Agricul-ture.

We have the resources and expertise to assist and support you. Trust us to monitor and devise the solutions you need to meet your agricultural feed and food requirements.

SGS Hungary has invested in extending operating hours and increasing the flexibility of reporting.

    7-DAY OPERATIONS

In response to increasing client demand, SGS Hungary’s laboratory and its inspectors now operate seven days a week. We have invested in personnel and resources to revise operating hours, increasing the availability of sampling, testing, analysis and certification. This has reduced turnaround times and enabled us to become more responsive.

Seven-day operations mean our team can now deliver certificates at weekends and with improved liaison between our laboratory and on-site inspectors we are able to release key data and report on some test parameters during loading.

    CLOSE PROXIMITY

Along the Danube we have six labs in close proximity to port operations. To maintain and improve our services, we invest in both training our people and in providing modern equipment for our laboratories.

    ACCREDITATION EXTENDED

Our ISO 17025 accreditation has been extended for four years and our scope maintained. Considered one of the most advanced testing facilities in the region, the scope of our analytical services include more than 500 accredited parameters and a comprehensive range of tests.

All our services are conducted in accordance with internationally recognised standards and methods for:

    • Physical analysis • Chemical analysis • Heavy metals • Pesticide residues • Mycotoxins • Microbiological analysis

To facilitate the delivery of tests in a timely and secure fashion, SGS’ sample management system “QLab” allows customers to track samples and view analytical reports in real time, 24/7.

ROMANIANew staff, new state-of-the-art equip-ment and faster turnaround times sum up an exciting and busy year for SGS Romania.

    STATE OF THE ART INVESTMENT

Building on the success of our testing and analysis business, we have invested in equipment to deliver more and faster test results, including:

    • High Performance Liquid Chromato-graphy (HPLC)

    • Gas Chromatography Mass Spectro-metry (GC/MS-MS)

    • Real-time Polymerase Chain Reac-tion (PCR)

    • Atomic absorption spectrometer with graphite furnace and hydride generation system

    • Elemental analyser C, H, N, S

This enables us to offer testing and analysis for mycotoxins, aflatoxins, heavy metals, pesticide residues, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), protein content using Dumas method, in addition to extended working capacity for protein based on Kjeldhal method, gluten, gluten index and falling number testing.

In 2014, we conducted some 50,000 analyses, an increase of 25% on 2013, and by April 2015, we had already com-pleted 15,000 analyses.

    24/7 OPERATIONS

In addition to our investment in equip-ment, we have employed new analysts and operators, and doubled our capacity for key analyses. As a result, we now offer services 24/7. Average turnaround times have been reduced, typically from closing the hatches to delivery of the analysis and certification will take just two to three days.

    INLAND INSPECTIONS

Inland, we have recruited eight new Inland Inspectors, and appointed a Qua-lity Coordinator, to oversee this growing team and ensure the quality and consis-tency of its work. This position has been created in addition to our existing team of port-based Quality Coordinators.

SERBIAWith the rape seed season in full swing, SGS Serbia is reaping the reward of its investment programme.

    INVESTING IN EFFICIENCY

To improve seed sampling and analysis, as well as build cooperation and efficiency, SGS is installing Infratec grain analysers in more than 25 client silos. This equipment delivers faster analysis of grain, including moisture analysis, proteins, gluten as well as the oil and protein in soya.

In addition, automatic sampling equipment is being installed at key client locations, under five-year contracts. Two samplers were installed in 2014, and a further five will be installed in 2015, including one at the main sampling station of one of Serbia’s biggest sunflower oil producers, in Šid. The total capacity of the silos where automatic samplers will be installed is about 200 KMT.

    NEW LABORATORY IN PROGRESS

SGS Serbia will open new laboratory facilities in late 2015. At the same time we will migrate our existing Novi Sad services to the new site. Strategically located in Stara Pazova, it will service the ports of Novi Sad and Belgrade (Pančevo). Meeting customer needs all in one place, this facility will mean increased sampling and testing capacity, as well as reduced turnaround times.

    TEAM TRAINING

With investment in new technology, on multiple sites, and the new harvesting season ongoing, our inspectors, scientists, technicians and office staff completed training to ensure our skills are up to date and effective in meeting client needs.

    FULL SERVICE

From sampling, the preparation of samples, their testing and analysis, to quantity control and control of goods during storage, SGS offers clients a full service, from silo to loading.
