Opalescent symphOny fOr a harp

The multifaceted glass façade of the new Concert and Congress Centre

Harpa (Icelandic for harp) plays with the lighting moods created by the

sea, city and sky in the harbor of Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavík. This

is made possible by color effect glasses and over 1,000 pentagonal and

hexagonal glass elements, including products supplied by SCHOTT. The

28,000 square meter building is the result of the collaboration between

the star artist Olafur Eliasson and Henning Larsen Architects. <|

Die facettenreiche Glasfassade des neuen Konzert- und Kongresszentrums

Harpa (isländisch: Harfe) spielt mit der Lichtstimmung von Meer, Stadt

und Himmel im Hafen der isländischen Hauptstadt Reykjavik. Dies er-

möglichen Farbeffektgläser sowie über 1.000 fünf- und sechseckige Glas-

elemente, darunter auch Produkte von SCHOTT. Das im Sommer 2011

fertiggestellte und 28.000 Quadratmeter große Gebäude ist das Werk

Bei der Vergabe des Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitspreises 2011, der unter der Schirmherrschaft von

Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Angela Merkel stand, schaffte SCHOTT mit seiner bekannten Marke CERAN® den

Sprung unter die Top 3 in der Kategorie „Deutschlands nachhaltigste Produkte und Dienstleistungen“.

Den Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitspreis erhalten jedes Jahr Unternehmen, die vorbildlich wirtschaftlichen

Erfolg mit sozialer Verantwortung und Schonung der Umwelt verbinden. Die Expertenjury würdigte

die herausragende technologische Kompetenz von SCHOTT sowie die Wahrnehmung von Verantwor-

tung für die Gesellschaft und Umwelt. Nach der Entwicklung einer neuen Schmelztechnologie brach-

te der Technologiekonzern als erster Anbieter weltweit die schwarze Glaskeramik-Kochfläche auf den

Markt, die ohne den Zusatz von Arsen und Antimon im Produktionsprozess hergestellt wird. Über 180

Tonnen dieser Stoffe pro Jahr lassen sich dadurch einsparen – eine erhebliche Entlastung der Umwelt.

SCHOTT ist damit der Vorreiter auf dem Gebiet der „grünen“ Glaskeramik. <|

A Prime Example of Sustainability

The environmentally friendly glass-ceramic cooktop panel schott ceran®

ranks among Germany’s most sustainable products

SCHOTT made it to the top 3 in the category “Germany’s Most Sustainable Products and Services”

with its well-known brand CERAN® in the presentation of the German Sustainability Award 2011, for

which Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel acted as the patron. The German Sustainability Award

is presented each year to companies who combine economic success with social responsibility and

environmental protection in an exemplary manner. The expert jury paid tribute to SCHOTT’s out-

standing technological expertise and the way in which the company takes responsibility for society

and the environment. After developing a new melting technology, the technology group became

the world’s first company to introduce a black glass-ceramic cooktop panel that is manufactured

without using the additives arsenic and antimony in the production process. This spares the envi-

ronment 180 tons of these substances each year and thus significantly reduces the burden on the

environment. SCHOTT is therefore the leader in the area of “green” glass-ceramic. <|

Laser Glassesthat Protect the Eyes

For measurement and medical technology

The new active laser glasses from SCHOTT that

go by the names LG-910 and LG-930 emit at a

wavelength of 1.5 μm that go easy on people’s

eyes – an important prerequisite for being put

to use in measuring distances, marking targets

or cosmetic laser treatments in dermatology,

for instance. The phosphate glasses feature a

dielectric coating, are highly resistant to laser

radiation and meet the highest environmental

standards. They are mainly for use in pumped

solid-state lasers and offer better thermome-

chanical properties and higher efficiency than

competitive technologies in pulsed applications.

LG-940, a new version of the product family,

will be launched in the spring of 2012. <|

Für Medizin- und Messtechnik

Die neuen aktiven Lasergläser von SCHOTT mit

der Bezeichnung LG-910 und LG-930 emittieren

bei einer augenschonenden Wellenlänge von

1,5 μm – eine wichtige Voraussetzung für den

Einsatz etwa bei Entfernungsmessung, Zielmar-

kierung oder kosmetischen Laserbehandlungen

in der Dermatologie. Die Phosphatgläser sind

dielektrisch beschichtet, hoch beständig gegen

Laserstrahlung und entsprechen anspruchsvol-

len Umweltstandards. Sie kommen insbesonde-

re in gepumpten Festkörperlasern zum Einsatz

und bieten bessere thermomechanische Eigen-

schaften und eine höhere Effizienz als Konkur-

renz-Technologien in gepulsten Anwendungen.

Mit LG-940 kommt eine neue Version der Pro-

duktfamilie im Frühjahr 2012 auf den Markt. <|

Frankfurter Airport Center navigiert

Reisende via SCHOTT Infoterminal

Ein Glasquader mit mehreren Monitoren bildet

den zentralen Teil eines Wege-Leitsystems im

renovierten Frankfurter Airport Center. Das mit

dem glänzenden Spezialglas MIRONA® verklei-

dete Informationsterminal von SCHOTT weist

den Besuchern des Büro- und Konferenzzent-

rums am Flughafen Frankfurt den Weg und bie-

tet über Touchscreens Zugriff auf Reise daten.

Das dabei eingesetzte Verwandlungsglas von

SCHOTT trägt eine Spezialbeschichtung. Durch

die entstehenden Lichtbrechungseffekte schei-

nen die Bilder der Monitore auf dem Glasobjekt

zu schweben, während Rahmen und technisches

Innenleben hinter der spiegelnden Oberfl äche

verborgen bleiben. <|

Frankfurt Airport Center guides passengers

with information terminal from SCHOTT

A glass cube that features several monitors

serves as the main component of a guidance

system at the newly renovated Frankfurt Air-

port Center. The information terminal encased

in the special glass MIRONA® from SCHOTT

points the way for visitors to the offi ce and

conference center at Frankfurt Airport and of-

fers access to travel data via touchscreens. The

metamorphosis glass from SCHOTT used in

this application features a special coating. Due

to the light refraction effects that result, the

images appear to fl oat on the monitors while

the refl ective surface remains hidden. <|

Yes to SolarModule Recycling

SCHOTT Solar supports more

stringent European agreement

SCHOTT Solar has signed the new, even more

stringent voluntary agreement on the collec-

tion and treatment of end-of-life PV modules

(Environmental Agreement). The resolution of

the industrial association PV CYCLE calls for at

least percent of the PV modules in Europe

that have reached the end of their service lives

to be collected. “Wise use of our natural re-

sources doesn’t stop at our company’s gates.

We view the sustainable change in energy

policy as a comprehensive process over the

entire life cycle,” explains Dr. Holger Hoppe,

Head of Sustainability and EHS at SCHOTT Solar

and a member of the Board of Management of

PV CYCLE. <|

SCHOTT Solar unterstützt

strengere europäische Vereinbarung

SCHOTT Solar hat die neue, strengere Selbstver-

pfl ichtung zur Rücknahme und Behandlung von

Photovoltaik-Altmodulen (Environmental Agree-

ment) unterzeichnet. Der Beschluss der Indust-

rie-Vereinigung PV CYCLE sieht vor, mindestens

Prozent der PV-Module, die ihr Lebensende

erreicht haben, in Europa zu sammeln. „Der

sorgsame Umgang mit den natürlichen Ressour-

cen hört nicht am Firmentor auf. Wir begreifen

die nachhaltige Energiewende als einen ganz-

heitlichen Prozess über den Lebenszyklus hin-

weg“, erklärt Dr. Holger Hoppe, Head of Sustai-

nability and EHS bei SCHOTT Solar und Vor-

Shaped Laser Light without Lenses

Beam shaper makes collimation

lenses for laser diodes dispensable

Laser diodes are compact and efficient and are

used today in a variety of different applications.

They emit light, but in a way that fans out

broadly. For this reason, so-called “Fast Axis

Collimation” lenses (FAC) that are difficult to

position are used to form the beam. The new

beam shaper launched by SCHOTT is much

easier to use. It consists of flexible glass fibers

that have been melted together to form a rect-

angular inbound profile and can be attached

directly to laser diodes. Then, it can shape their

light into homogeneous beams of any shape

that offer high beam quality. <|

Beam Shaper macht Kollimations-

linsen für Laserdioden überflüssig

Laserdioden sind kompakt, effizient und wer-

den heute in zahlreichen Applikationen einge-

setzt. Sie emittieren Licht jedoch stark auf-

gefächert. Zur Strahlformung werden darum

sogenannte „Fast Axis Collimation“-Linsen

(FAC) eingesetzt, die aufwendig zu positionie-

ren sind. Der neue Beam Shaper von SCHOTT

ist sehr viel leichter anzuwenden. Er besteht

aus flexiblen Glasfasern, die zu einem recht-

eckig geformten Eingangsprofil verschmolzen

werden, und lässt sich direkt an Laserdioden

koppeln. Deren Licht kann er in homogene

Lichtstrahlen jeglicher gewünschten Kontur

mit hoher Strahlqualität formen. <|

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer, Vorsitzender des

Vorstandes der SCHOTT AG, ist der neue Prä-

sident der glasstec 2012, Weltleitmesse der

Glasbranche. Neben den Mandaten im SCHOTT

Konzern ist Udo Ungeheuer unter anderem

auch Präsident des Bundesverbands Glas-

industrie e.V. Die glasstec/solarpeq findet

im zweijährigen Turnus statt. Sie bildet als ein-

zige internationale Fachmesse den gesamten

Wertschöpfungsprozess Glas ab und findet im

Oktober 2012 auf dem Düsseldorfer Messege-

Prof. Udo Ungeheuer now head of

the world’s leading trade fair glasstec

Prof. Udo Ungeheuer, Chairman of the Board

of Management of SCHOTT AG, is the new

President of glasstec 2012, the world’s leading

trade fair for the glass industry. Besides the

positions he holds with the SCHOTT Group,

Udo Ungeheuer is also President of the Fed-

eral Association of the German Glass Industry

e.V. among other things. The glasstec/solarpeq

takes place every two years and ranks as the

only international trade fair that covers the

entire value chain on glass. The exhibition

will be held at the Düsseldorf fairgrounds in

October, 2012. <|

LED LightingCombines Strengths

The first co-production

between schott and Lufthansa Technik

A new lighting solution for aircraft cabins com-

bines the strengths of modern lighting tech-

nologies in a unique way. This new develop-

ment uses light diodes, glass elements and fi-

ber optic light guides to deliver homogeneous

and energy-efficient illumination. It emits light

evenly, just like a fluorescent tube, but uses

two long-lasting LEDs that project their light

into the opposite face sides of the round glass

rod. Both the light direction and the aperture

angle can be adjusted precisely. This product

also ensures extremely homogeneous light

distribution with linear emission. <|

kabinen vereint die Stärken moderner Licht-

entwicklung kombiniert Leuchtdioden, Glas-

elemente und faseroptische Lichtleitung für

eine homogene, energieeffiziente Illumination

Sie strahlt gleichmäßig wie eine Leuchtstoff-

röhre, arbeitet jedoch mit zwei langlebigen

LEDs, die ihr Licht an den beiden Stirnseiten

des runden Glasstabes einspeisen. Strahlrich-

tung und Öffnungswinkel lassen sich exakt

steuern. Das Produkt liefert zudem eine

äußerst homogene Lichtverteilung mit linien-

förmiger Abstrahlung. <|
