As we informed you in our previous issue, our new Senior English Language Fellow Carol Haddaway is arriving in Kyiv this month. She will be serving for the academic year 2011-12 with the English Teaching Resource Center at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Prior to this assignment she served as a Senior ELF in Damascus, Syria where she conducted teacher training for the English Language Supervisors, Ministry of Education and at the American Language Center. Carol has designed and taught TESOL Methodology courses face to face and online in the E-Teacher Scholarship Program at UMBC and was a full time Instructional Specialist at Anne Arundel Community College. She also designed and taught ESP for Medical and Science Professionals at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She has a Master’s degree in Instructional System Design/ESOL Bilingual from UMBC and a MSc degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences from JHU. Soon after her arrival to Ukraine, Carol will be engaged in a two-day event organized by the Office of English Language Programs. But starting October 18 she will conduct the teacher training workshops and moderate Youth Discussion Club meetings at ETRC. In addition to the regular teacher training workshops at ETRC, the Office of English Language Programs is pleased to offer the fourth ETL webinar course entitled Shaping the Way We Teach English. The 5 online seminars of the course cover a variety of topics and are intended for teachers of English or future teachers of English around the world. The series will run from October 5 to November 30, 2011. Each 90-minute webinar will take place every other Wednesday from 3:00 – 4:30 PM. As the number of work stations that can access the webinars is limited in Ukraine, we invite all those who are interested in participating in the ELT webinars to register as members of a viewing group at ETRC. We will join the webinars on one of our computers and project the video on a screen so that the participants could get a better view and an opportunity to fully engage with the webinars. Certificates will be provided by the Office of English Language Programs for those who will attend at least 3 sessions. That includes the viewing group participants. It will show how different perceptions on learning, language acquisition, and the nature of language affected the approaches taken in the classroom and appreciate how methods complement each other. In addition, principles of language teaching and learning will be presented to better inform your instructional practice.

Why is listening important to you? What do you need to listen to? Do you need to understand EVERY word that you hear? This presentation will discuss the different skills involved in listening. We will also look at ways to make listening input comprehensible and how to check comprehension through various techniques while building communicative abilities of students.

Its domain name is simple, explicit and memorable.On the site pages you will find the general information about ETRC and its library resources and services, the latest information about upcoming events and new library acquisitions, announcements

from the U.S. Embassy and our partner organizations, and useful online resources. b) Newsletter Visnyk now in FacebookThe Public Affairs Section’s newsletter Visnyk is now in Facebook. c) Future Leaders Exchange Program, Ukraine 2012-2013The Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) in Ukraine is holding entrance testing for the 2012-2013 academic year. FLEX is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, is administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS (American Councils) and supported by the Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine. The program provides Ukrainian high school students with

d) America Days in Kharkiv 2011From September 26 – 29, 2011, Kharkiv hosted America Days – a series of events organized by the US Embassy in Kyiv to celebrate the many ties between Kharkiv and the Unites States. US Ambassador John F. Tefft visited the city to open these “America Days in Kharkiv” which included a jazz concert, opening of a new LEAP computer center, a photo exhibit September 26, “The Art of Science: Cosmic Mosaics from the Hubble Telescope” and an Education Fair. A host of activities took place during the four day days, many were open to the general public, including:Photo exhibit “The Art of Science: Cosmic Mosaics from the Hubble Telescope”Willie Martinez Band – Latin Jazz ConcertU.S. Education Day – A day long program which highlighted opportunities for studying in the US. The US Ambassador opened the Fair, which had representatives of such programs as Fulbright, Muskie and FLEX. The US consul general gave a talk on students and visas.

e) Willie Martinez and La Familia Sextet bring New York Latin Beat to Ukraine as Part of the American Music Series, September-October, 2011Willie Martinez, the well-known New York drummer and vocalist started performing with his band, La Familia Sextet, in concerts in Kharkiv (September 27), Simferopol (September 29), Kerch (September 30), and will be playing in Sevastopol (October 1), and Kyiv (October 3). Their concert opened “America Days” in Kharkiv, a four day celebration of US ties with the city.The tour continues the US Embassy’s American Music Series, launched in 2009. This time AMS is presenting Latin jazz fusion music to Ukrainian audiences. The tour is being co-organized by the Jazz in Kiev production agency, with famous Ukrainian radio personality Alex Kogan hosting the concerts.Willie Martinez is one of the most sought-after drummers and vocalists playing Latin Jazz in New York. His band, La Familia Sextet is an embodiment of what typical New York band looks like: musicians with diverse origins, backgrounds and experience performing together, echoing today’s musical landscape in the United States. The group plays original music written by its members and arrangements of Latin classics. The band’s music is a unique mix of Afro-Caribbean rhythm and the harmonic structure and improvisational nature of New York. PostersPicture USPicture US is a collection of 26 full-color durable posters showing various scenes from around the United States (farmers market, kindergarten students, rodeo, mural, powwow, etc.). The photographs are intended to stimulate and motivate students in conversation activities. An insert with detailed tips for using images in the classroom is included. Forum City Poster ShowThese poster sets are a great, flexible classroom resource for information and discussion— a set of three posters corresponds to a city spotlighted in Forum vol. 46 and the feature article about that city, available online. Full-color photographs and basic facts about each city are great for sparking conversation and lend themselves to a variety of classroom activities. In addition, the four featured cities have many sister cities worldwide and may be of particular interest to teachers and students in those locations.
