Grand Trustee Darrell Rall will attempt to ride 25,000 miles in 25 days to help raise money for The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa. As the sun rises over the Las Vegas strip Thursday, June 14, Fraternal Order of Eagles Grand Trustee Darrell Rall will embark on a 25-day, 25,000-mile motorcycle journey known as “Iron Eagle 2012” in hopes of finding a cure for diabetes. Rall, 64, is taking on the physically daunting task to raise money for The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center - a five-year, $25 million commitment made by the organization to the University of Iowa in 2008 to help find a cure. The California native and 36-year member of the F.O.E. hopes “Iron Eagle” can be the catalyst for bringing an end to the disease, affecting nearly 30 million Americans and Canadians. “It is my goal to do whatever I can to help end the suffering of those living with diabetes,” Rall said. “I’ve seen what it can do first hand and I think it’s important that we continue to find ways to help fund research and help these people live without diabetes consuming their lives.” The ride will span the United States and Canada, passing by many of the F.O.E.’s approximately 1,700 Aeries, before wrapping up Sunday, July 8, in Grand Rapids, Mich., as part of the F.O.E.’s 2012 International Convention. News & Notestransforming his body into prime riding condition with a rigorous training regimen and strict diet. The Fraternal Order of Eagles is proud to be the primary sponsor of the ride.

“I am proud to be a part of an organization that works so hard to help others,” Rall said. “Eagles give their all every day to make the day brighter for so many. My Eagle brothers and sisters will be in my heart as I head out to accomplish this.”

To complete the ride will require 18 hours of road time each day. With the unpredictability of the weather, unexpected traffic and the stress of constant use placed on the motorcycle, obstacles abound, but Rall is hoping his intense and time-consuming preparation in all aspects of the journey will alleviate any troubles he may encounter.

Through it all, he remains active in his Aerie, South Gate, Calif., #2080, and continues to serve as International Coordinator of the Eagle Riders, an internal unit of the F.O.E. which provides members an outlet to share in their love of motorcycles. He balances his work with a family life that includes five children, 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a fiancée, Tammy.

“Something of this scale takes a lot of time and effort,” Rall said. “I was blessed with a patient family who supports me wholeheartedly, even if it means having a little less of my time during the process. The ride really begins long before I start my quest in Las Vegas and I’m proud to be surrounded by wonderful people who understand that.”

Supporters can follow his quest online at www.foe.com where a full ride schedule will be posted, as well as links to a GPS mechanism that will track Rall’s progress and a live video stream of the event.

The F.O.E. Grand Aerie will provide regular updates through our main website, Facebook, Twitter and e-newsletters as the ride progresses.

Due to the nature of the ride, stops will be short and extremely infrequent, however members are encouraged to plan events at the Aerie to watch Rall’s live stream and raise money for the D.R.C. The success of “Iron Eagle” depends on interaction from our Aeries and Auxiliaries, so start planning now to help make a difference!

Donations can be made online by clicking the red “Donate Now” button at www.foe.com, by mailing a check payable to the F.O.E. Charity Foundation/D.R.C. to 1623 Gateway Circle South, Grove City, OH 43123, or by texting DRCRIDE to 20222 beginning June 14.
