Autumn leaves on trees around the courtyard of the Pleasant Hill Church social hall were changing their colors but descendants of George Fogleman were there on Saturday, October 6, to search their family roots. Early Vogelmann’s in Pennyslvania

Most of the Vogelmann (later Fogleman) ancestors came to this country by way of Pennsylvania. Few, if any, ever owned land there yet religion has proven a prevalent and constant denominator in finding them during the Eighteenth Century. A connection has yet to be made with the Vogelmann’s in the Piedmont of North Carolina although it has not been ruled out. Sharing the findings will cer-tainly prove they were there much earlier than first believed. The Pennsylvania Early Census Index (PA Census 1772-1890) shows Hans Conrad Vogelmann in Philadelphia County, Pennsyl-vania. Year is 1738. Copy of the Ship’s Register is found on page 10. On 2 October 1749, Melchior Vogelmann, 40, wife Maria Barbara (Gramlich), and three (3) children, Johann Melchior 8, Johann Philipp 5, and Georg Friedrich 3, arrive on the Ship Jacob by way of Shields in England and from Rotterdam by Captain Adolph De Grove. And, Immigration Records: German and Swiss Settlers in America – 1700 – 1800s, provides additional details: VOGEL-MANN, MELCHIOR (2) – Mockmühl (1749) Farmer [Bauer]. The will of MELCHIOR VOGELMANN, of Macungie Tp., Northampton Co., Pa. dated December 3, 1785, probated September 22, 1789, mentions wf MARY BARBARA, and two children yet living: MELCHIOR, and MARY BAR-BARA, who married JOHN WUERTZ; executor, Michael Shaffer of Macungie; witnesses: Fred’k Limbach, Geo. The Historic Easton from the Window of a Trolley-Car by William J. Heller [Easton, PA. 1911] includes John Conrad Vogelmann as one of 300 congregants in the ―Congregation on the Delaware River Belonging to the Lutheran Religion.‖ Easton is located in Northampton County and is north east of Allentown, Pennsylvania. A Leonard Vogelmann is also among those who attended this church, erected about 1730 which flourished until 1750, on a site of a reservoir where the church stood at the foot of Morgan Hill. Leonard appears among the ―First Settlers in Bucks Co‖, east and near Northampton, and again in ―The Book Shelf Scrap Book of Easton & Northampton Co‖, Vol. 1, p.64ff, Marx Local H. He and Eva Maria Vogelmann are sponsor/baptism as shown in the Records of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Bucks County, Pa. Hans Georg Vogelmann was a sponsor for the baptismal of two infants: 1) Maria Magdal, dau. of David Lauh and Anna Maria—25 Mar—23 Apr 1753 (p. 3 of The Rainbow from the Quarterly of the PA German Society; and 2) little son baptized Samuel of David Law (Low) and his wife—5 Apr 1755 (p. 12 of The Rainbow.) at the Sherman’s (St. David’s) Union Church, York County, Pennsyl-vania, 1751 – 1800. Also, Hans Georg Vogelmann and Catharina Elisabetha Lawin were sponsors of the baptism of Joh. Nicholaus Wolfgang’s son Joh. Georg (b. 27 March) on 19 May 1755 (page that data appeared in The Rainbow was not included). The History of Jerusalem Lutheran and Reformed Church of Western Salisbury, Lehigh Co., PA, include Peter Vogelman and a Maria Vogelman in 1792. Records on communicants for the Records of Williams Township Congregation for the time period of 1773 include Conrad Vo-gelmann, Maria Catharina Vogelmann, and Mich, Conrad, Conrad & wife Vogelmann appear on page 134. Then, Jacob Vogel-mann, and Conrad, father of Anna Maria who had been Confirmed, appear among the same church records. In 1784, a Conrad Vogelmann, Sr., Jacob, Michael, Conrad, Catharina, and Anna Maria Vogelmann appear for the Dom XXII Trinity, per page 137 and 139. It is interesting to note that Eliz Goetz and Christina Goetz appear among these records as well. Dr. Aaron S. Fogleman presented baptismal records on Catharina Lau/Low that verified the birth date recorded in Alsace, France, as that belonging to Catharine Lau/Low, wife of George Vogelmann, both of whom are buried at Low’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Guilford County, North Carolina. This changed a long belief and disproved that Georg Vogelmann had married a Catharine Goetz. The Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 1751 – 1800: Trinity Union Lutheran and Reformed Church records Eva Maria Vogelmann and a John Conrad Vogelmann. Leigh County, Pennsylvania, 1782 – 1856: Christ Lutheran Congregation shows the following Vogelmann’s: Catharina Vogelman, Friedrich Vogelman, and, then there are two-separate dates for Heinrich Vogelman – 10 Mar 1831 and 26 Jun 1831.

Ship Elizabeth 1738 - Hans Conrad Vogelman

Advances in technology increases the opportunities for researchers today and the above information is certainly proof of that fact. The early history of the Voglemann / Fogleman dates back to Hans Georg Vogelmann arriving on the Ship Shirley in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 5 September 1751. A note by the Rev. D. I. Offman who served at Low’s Lutheran Church, Guilford County, North Carolina, referred to Georg Fogleman, wife, and two young sons coming to the Piedmont section of North Carolina by way of Wil-mington in the 1730s. This is not in dispute. It is unfortunate that the proof supporting this point has been lacking and has not been found in North Carolina. It may be that the answer lies in Pennsylvania!
