Christmas and the New Year 2017 isaround the corner; a season of celebra-tion and joy with family.

Our Fogolar has had a successful 2016with some monumental events that hap-pened.

First, the welcoming of the "TeutoniaClub" members with their overwhelmingacceptance of our invitation to use ourfacilities.

Second, the record breaking attendance

to our Fogolar Hunters Banquet held inFebruary. Close to 700 people enjoyedthe evening featuring an exclusive menuand dance.

Third, the Polenta Gala night was atremendous evening which raised fundsfor the House Of Sophrosyne. More newsto come.

Fourth, the Fogolar Women’s Associationagain had a successful year with theirevents and our Fogolar is so fortunate tohave them as part our Club.

Congratulations to all the scholarshipwinners. Your families, as well as all themembers of our Fogolar, are very proudof your accomplishments. Rememberyour roots – they are your foundation toyour future success. Thank you to thescholarship committee for their work inreviewing the scholarship program,requesting applications and selecting thisyear’s winners.

Special thank you to all the volunteers fortheir time and work in keeping ourFogolar beautiful and in good repair. Youare a vital asset to our Fogolar. We arealways in need of volunteers so don't beshy. It’s a fun time to spend working withfriends.

Finally I hope to see most of our mem-bers at the Christmas Banquet onDecember 17. More information may beobtained by calling the office. spent the past three months enjoying

the warm Windsor weather playing

We did not have one rainy day, and

ending with our usual pizza party.

Trunk & TreatWe had a wonderful turnout of around 40 children forour annual Trunk or Treat on October 28th. The chil-dren and their families had a great time decoratingpumpkins, making crafts, playing games, enjoying hotchocolate and other treats like witch's brew punch. Thekids then got to trick or treat safely around a blockedoff area of the parking lot, going from trunk to trunk toget some delicious goodies. It was a great night andwe hope for an even bigger turnout next year!

LecturesAt the beginning of October, we welcomed MonicaDePaoli, a board member at the Famee Furlane inHamilton, to our Fogolar. She presented a lecture onthe 40th anniversary of the Friuli Earthquake in 1976. Itwas a great presentation with a lot of personalaccounts. There was a good turnout of members whostayed and participated in the lecture. Monica had anice time visiting our Fogolar and was very happy toreceive such overwhelming gratitude from our mem-bers for all of her dedication in putting together the lec-ture. We hope to be able to have her back again soon!

Andy and Donna Moro, from the Caboto Club, present-ed “The Story of Italian Immigrants in the 20th century,today and beyond” on Monday, November 7. It was aninteresting talk presented by three generations of theMoro family. Although there were many familiar facts,there were also many interesting, new and surprisingcontributions that many people in the audience learnedabout that evening. We would like to thank Andy andDonna Moro for a pleasant evening and we hope tosee them back at our club.

Astronomy NightThe Fogolar held an Astronomy night FridaySeptember 9. Approximately 40 people attended theevening. People had a chance to listen to a brief lec-ture before heading outside to view the evening sky.There were a number of telescopes on hand and themembers and friends of the Fogolar had a chance toview some of the evening skies before the cloudsappeared. We would like to thank Steve Pellarin, amember of our club as well as a member of the RoyalAstronomical Society of Canada as well as PaulaO’Rourke, Nancy Ng, M. Starr-Livingston of the RASC

Polenta Gala 2016The Polenta Gala took place Saturday, September 17this year. The event was hosted in support of theHouse of Sophrosyne. It was a successful eveningwith wine tasting from Pelee Island, a unique menu,many different auction items and entertainment by BigLouie and the Band. We thank everyone who helpedorganize this event as well as those who donateditems and sponsorships. We look forward to nextyear’s event.

Friuli Fest DinnerThe Italian Genealogy and Heraldry Society of Canadaheld its first Friuli Fest Dinner on November 3. Theevening began with wine tasting by Vins Dal Friul, fam-ily history displays and the Gotis di Rosade to sing theItalian and Canadian National Anthems as well assome traditional Italian/Furlan songs. The guestsenjoyed a lovely meal designed and presented by Chefand member Rino Bortolin. The evening concludedwith a lecture by the IGHSC president and genealogistFlavio Andreatta. It was a cozy and quaint evening.

The need for blood is constant. Did you know that ittakes up to 8 donors a week to help someone withLeukemia and up to 50 donors to help someone in acar crash? Since blood products have a limited shelflife, demand is constant. We need 10,000 newdonors this year in Canada.

To donate, you must be 17 years of age and in gener-al good health. Age restrictions have been lifted.This year give the gift that can’t be bought.

The Canadian Blood Services Donation week for theFogolar will be November 28-December 3. Donate onbehalf of the Fogolar and receive a Friday night din-ner ticket.

Fogolar Calcio concluded their 2016 season with a4th place finish in the Windsor Senior Men’s Soccer14-team league with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses.The team also reached the final of the 2016Amherstburg Soccer Tournament, losing a toughmatch to the Islanders Soccer Club from Toronto.The team would once again like to thank the supportof their sponsors Masotti Construction and LGSIndustries and look forward to continuing their suc-cess in the upcoming 2017 season while representingthe Fogolar Furlan. Cultural EventsFurlan Conversation NightWe held our first Furlan Conversation Night onNovember 8th. We had a few young adults come out,eager to learn a little bit of conversational Furlan. Welearned how to introduce members of our family anddiscuss where our families come from.

Our next class will be on November 22nd from 7-9pmat the Fogolar. For this class we are asked to comeprepared with 2 or 3 small anecdotes (in English) andtry to tell it (in Furlan) to the other members of thegroup. Also, bring in an easy recipe and we will try toexplain how to make the dish (in Furlan).

The following class is scheduled for December 6th.The theme for that class is still being determined.The Furlan Conversation Nights are aimed at adults(over 16) who are interested in learning to speakFurlan. It is a free event and a fun night out at theFogolar.

Christmas Family SkateOur annual Family Skate will take place on December26, 2016 at Lanspeary Park. We have the ice from10am to 12pm and then there will be a lunch at the

Women’s Association Annual Banquet

On Sunday, October 16, theWomen’s Association held theirannual fall banquet. The after-noon event was attended byapproximately 85 guests whowere treated to a wonderful per-formance by the Gotis di RosadeChildren’s Choir; a deliciousFogolar meal; and music for danc-ing provided by Musically Yours.Three 30-year members werehonored at the banquet – MariaAnzolin, Ancilla DeZorzi, andFranca Volpatti (pictured in topphoto). The Women’s Associationwould like to thank Lou Villalta and theFogolar kitchen staff, the servers, bar-tenders, and office staff for making thisevent a success.

The member’s annual Christmas Dinnerwill be held on Thursday, December 8,

2016 at 6:30 pm. In the giving spirit ofthe holidays and tradition, we ask thatall those attending bring a canned food,dry goods, or toiletry item to be donatedto the Welcome Shelter for Women onBridge Avenue. This has become anannual tradition for the Women’sAssociation and is always greatly appre-ciated by the shelter.

Gotis di Rosade

The children’s choir performed for theassociation’s annual banquet in Octoberand for the Genealogy’s Festa del Friuil.Both performances were thoroughlyenjoyed by all those in attendance.
