FRACTION VOCABULARY
WHOLE NUMBER
The set of counting (natural) numbers and 0
(0, 1, 2, 3, …., n)
FRACTION
• A fraction can be used to name part of an object, set of objects, to compare two quantities, or to represent division.
• A number in the form where a and b are whole numbers and b is not equal to zero.
NUMERATOR
• The part of a fraction written above the fraction bar that tells the number of fractional parts we are looking at.
DENOMINATOR
• The part of a fraction written below the fraction bar that tells the total number of equal parts in a whole or set.
UNIT FRACTION
• A fraction where the top number (the "numerator") is 1.
• where b is a non-zero whole number.
BENCHMARK FRACTION
• Common fractions that you can judge other numbers against.

FRACTION VOCABULARY
PROPER FRACTION
• A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator.
• A number in the form where a and b are whole numbers and a < b where b is not equal to zero.
IMPROPER FRACTION
• A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator. Top heavy!
• A number in the form where a and b are whole numbers and a > b where b is not equal to zero.
MIXED NUMBER
• A number that is composed of a whole number and a fraction.
EQUIVALENT FRACTION
• Fractions that have the same value.
