Through extensive analysis of our site and it’s surrounding area, we estab-lished footscray as a multi-ethnic district with a diverse culture that has grown and developed it’s own unique indentity within the fabric of greater Melbourne. Like most in-teresting urban cultures, footscrays richness comes from the adaption and growth of it’s communities within an environment, perhaps not originally designed for it’s current occupants. Our site, along the marrybranong river, remained predominantly untouched with a majority of unsused space. This created the challenge of enhancing the area with new spaces that allow the existing culture to take over and continue to grow.

In alignment with the inner city densification of Melbourne, we are proposing a development that will vastly increase the number of dwell-ings in footscray as well as introduce public ground, community facilities along with commercial and retail opportunities. Our development plans

to enhance and support the further development of footscrays exciting identity with our focus to keep the existing culture by responding to the eclectic vibe of Footscray as well as the characteristics of our site.

We’ve identified the vibe as a cultur-ally diverse community that promotes inclusion, creativity and social en-gagement within a variety of intimate urban spaces. Our response has been to mimic this urban fabric to create new intimate spaces that will allow this vibe to continue to grow.

Along with this vibe, our development has also taken into account the many appealing environmental attributes of our existing site. These include the river, the city views and the existing buildings and their typology. However, we have also considered the envi-ronmental issues the site faces with flooding and it’s flat topology. These key characteristics combined with the vibe of the area have been the main drivers of our concept.

Floating multi city 201402

The proposed system merits to preserve the wetland it is sitting on.Wetlands play an increasingly important role in the city: aside from their social value they provide a venue for wildlife and con¬tribute to a multitude of natu-ral ecosystems. Semi vegetated pollut-ed sites such as theis one in Macaulay offer an exceptional opportunity for this kind of redevelopment.

The 6 key ideas for the proposal are:1.To preserve the wetland2.Floating building3.Vegetation growing through building4.Bringing community, learning and research to a central role5.Digital system to create form6.Ambiguous skin

The proposal responds to this potential through the development of a series of digital processes that create a building that floats gently above the landscape. The skin of the building is responding to the vegetation growing on site. The fins(facade) would contract together and deepen where there is no vegetation to allow for shelter and open up where it is vegetation to let light and vegetation pass through. It is avoiding key areas of existing planting and in turn protecting the ground below, allowing for its reten-tion as a wetland ecosystem. The program intend to bring community, research and learning to a central role. It is doing so by inviting the community in through a series of entries. The special outcome of the system leaves a variety of open or private spaces. The spaces allows for an exploration of the wetland without destroying it, as well as utilizing

the site as a exhibition/learning facility and office or research lab.The final result explores a smooth al-most seamless way where the Fins (Fa-cade) leaves the ambiguous question of indoor and outdoor. Some areas opens up and becomes outdoor, some are half enclosed only by the fins and some fully enclosed sealed with window. The final outcome is a building that supports the wetland and encourages the community to be involved in the environment.

History of site Moonee Ponds Creeks, river runs through the site, a creek and major trib-utary of the Yarra River running through urban Mel¬bourne, Victoria, AustraliaBefore European settlement, Moonee Ponds Creek was the home of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin nation.During the 1850s, the swamp became a receptacle for waste waters for the suburbs in the area. The wetland is now endangered by waste and pollution caused by its surroundingsThe creeks’ history raises vital ques-tions about its future. The wetland was once an important source of land, and its potential is still valuable today. The proposed design merits to reconstruct what was once there. In future the area can become a resourceful natural eco-systems, and can be once again useful for the public. The relationship between landscape and building is gracefully solved with technology that leaves the ancient tradi-tion (the wetland untouched and wildly grown) and modernity (form and skin that responds to the environment and generates habitable space.
