SANTA BÁRBARACASTLE

The Moor’s Face - Cara del Moro

Without a doubt, one of the most emblematic images of

Alicante is the profile of Mount Benacantil, known by all as“the Moor’s Face”due to its likeness to a human face. Aslegend has it, this figure has arisen from a tragic story of love and death from the times when the city was ruled bythe Moors.

Santa Bárbara Castle

This is the city’s most emblematicbuilding. Crowning the top of MountBenacantil, at 166 m above sea leveland overlooking the beach, the majorityof the rooms still standing date backto the 16th century. Well worth amention are the keep, the Baluarte delos Ingleses bastion and the Salón de

Felipe II hall, among others. Visiting thecastle is a must in order to gain the bestviews of the city and the Alicante coast. It is even possible to make out the Islandof Tabarca.

An 18th century Baroquepalace, built between1699 and 1780, this is aunique building on threefloors flanked by twotowers and crowned by abalustrade. On the pillarwhere the rail of the main

staircase starts you can findthe so-called “cota cero”,the reference point fromwhich the height above sealevel of all other points inSpain are measured.

Santa María Basilica

Although this building dates back to the 13th century, it wasn18th century that it took on its current form with the addition oand the incorporation of new rococo-style altarpieces, as wellmolding and the organ, doing away with the austerity and simoriginal building.

San Nicolás de Bari Co-cathedral

This is one of the most important buildings inthe old quarter of Alicante, built in honourof the city’s patron saint between the years1616 and 1661, and promoted to thestatus of co-cathedral in 1959. The austerityof its Herrerian façade contrasts with itsluxurious interior, in which the impressive

gold altarpieces are particularly noteworthy, especially the high altar, as are the Cristode la Buena Muerte carving representingChrist on the cross, the cloister with aninterestingly Mediterranean aura and theBarroque communion chapel.
