The University of Navarra is one of the leading universitiesin Europe. The Faculty of Economics of the University of Navarra hasbeen the first institution, wich has offered bilingual economicand business education in Spain. Eight hundred undergraduatestudents of diverse backgrounds are given instruction fromprofessors from all over the world, and benefit from a largenetwork of exchange and partner programs with leadinginternational firms, business and institutions. FIRST [FALL] SEMESTER OFFERINGS

The aim of this module is to understand and to discern thefundamental economic problems from a microeconomicpoint of view. The course is designed to provide a soundbasis in the fundamentals of micro-economics and theirapplication to both theoretical and real world situations.Also it will help you to develop analytical skills using themajor methods of mathematics and diagrams. It furtherlooks into how to engender the ability to communicate andreport findings, particularly via essays, presentations andproblem sets. By the end of the module the students willbe able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of core areasof economics, how to reason logically and work analyticallyto justify conclusions using economic arguments with appro-priate rigor. There are no pre-requisites to taking this moduleand in particular there is no assumption of any prior knowledgeof economics.

Understanding the time evolution of economic variablesrequires a very good knowledge of infinitesimal calculus.Topics include a discussion of limits, derivatives, and theirapplication to the analysis of a function, an overview of inte-gration, basic techniques for integration, a variety of applicationsof integration, and analysis of convergence of series andsequences. In this course, students must acquire certainmathematical knowledge and skills that will constitute thebackground necessary for the understanding of the subsequentmath and economics courses.

The aim of this course is to provide the students with asound introduction to the uses of mathematics in businessand personal finance applications.Emphasized learning outcomes from the study of thismodule are, among others, to be able to solve problemswith simple and compound interest, as well as with annuities,to be able to apply it to real life situations and finally to learnhow to use the Excel Software.Taking this course will help the student acquire competencesand skills such as, to improve logical reasoning and work-time organization, set out and solve problems and realcases and know the financial vocabulary.

Macroeconomics gives the student a theoretical andempirical framework for the analysis of the macro magnitudesof the economy and their fluctuations (GDP, inflation, unem-ployment, interest rates...). Students will learn to understandthe fiscal and monetary policies designed to attain the mainmacroeconomic objectives: economic growth and pricestability. The methods and models taught in class will beexplained in the context of relevant historical and present-day examples.

The objective of the course is to introduce concepts fromstatistical inference and statistical models so as to be ableto further analyze practical problems from the fields of Eco-nomics and Management. The course will provide anoverview of data analysis methods, then we will presentthe fundamental aspects of probability theory. We will thenstudy discrete and continuous random variables. We willconclude with statistical inference methods related to theproblems of parameter estimation and hypothesis testing.

The main objective of the subject is to understand therecent development of contemporary economies. To doso, we will analyse the evolution of the world’s main eco-nomies and Spain’s one from the eighteenth century andthe Industrial Revolution. Special attention will be paid, ineach case, to the reasons for economic growth and therestraints. Throughout the course we will address mainlythe problem of uneven growth and the globalisation of theeconomy. A particular analysis of national cases will bemade illustrating successful or unsuccessful economicstrategies. This general approach will be complementedwith a study of the evolution of the forms of business orga-nisation and the development of managerial capitalism.

Markets are characterized by the complexity of their envi-ronment, as well as by increasing competition. This courseis focused on understanding external, economical and com-pany factors that build the Marketing strategies of the com-pany. Students will be able to identify and design the bestMarketing Strategy in different markets and environmentsand to understand how brand management works. Theywill learn how new tools such as digital media are givingnew solutions to the companies to market their productsand services and how to build the best consumer approachtaking into account the consumer target with the mostefficient brand strategy. The subject will cover topics suchas how to identify and empower the strengths of thecompany and how to protect from threats of the market.Another key learning objective of the subject is to analyzethe consumer’s behavior, its typologies and how to addressthem to build a successful impact and a long term loyaltylevel with them.

While Finance I was a course on investments where thelearning emphasis broad covering basic financial productsand financial markets, this course, Finance II is aboutcorporate finance, which deepens these earlier conceptsfocusing on financial value creation at the firm level.This course is designed in the areas so that student willbe able to apply financial concepts and theories learned inearlier finance courses to a broad range of practical problemsand case studies aimed at consolidating their technical kno-wledge and skills in finance. They will also be able to extendtheir technical finance knowledge and practical experienceby dealing with other important corporate finance topicssuch as valuation, capital structure, and financing. On topof that, the students will develop team skills as well asholistic and ethical values in finance.

This has led to significant changes inthe way companies are run, and the way they include newmanagement skills and competences. This course focuson some of them: Reputation, Brand Value, Innovation,Positioning, environment and ethics.

This course equips students to use English as an essentialtool in the business world. Students will learn to expressthemselves correctly both orally and in writing within theirworking environment; to speak in public and field questionsfrom the audience; and to read and write professional texts.This course is intended for students with an advancedlevel of English (B2-C1), and may not be taken in com-bination with Business Communication I.

The course is focused on the study of international trade.First of all, we will pay attention to the evidence on countries’behavior regarding foreign trade that, joint with the studyof several economic theories on this topic, will allow us tounderstand the pattern of trade between countries. Thestudent will be able to understand the importance of inter-national trade in current economies as well as to get a solidknowledge of some theoretical models of internationaltrade. The student will also be able to learn about some ofthe most controversial issues around international trade,starting from the classical discussion of free trade versusprotectionism. One of the objectives of this course is tohelp the student to reach a rigorous and well informedopinion about these issues.

“Política monetaria y sistema financiero” is an undergraduatecourse on monetary policy and financial markets, whichcombines lectures, oral presentations and class discussions.It focuses on the main issues on monetary policy andfinancial markets, such as financial crises, interest ratebehavior, central bank autonomy, monetary policy strategiesand inflation.*Note: This course is taught in Spanish but the material ofthe course is available in English and there is the possibilityto make the exam in English.

The main objectives of the course are:1) Understanding the concept of strategy and the formalprocess of designing a strategy. It includes the formalprocess of Designing a Strategy, Corporate Strategy,Business Strategy and Functional Strategy.2) The student must know the strategy from the point ofview of the war and how best commanders deployed theirstrategies on the most important battles of the world.3) Provide the student a practical overview of the businessworld by analyzing real cases.4) Developing the capacity of student team work, applyingstrategy knowledge to a team work.

Through the extensive use of business cases this coursedevelops skills in Corporate Finance, specifically: cash-flowprojections, market risks, cost of capital, effects of leverage,valuations and decision making in finance. The participantsare encouraged to thoroughly prepare the case at homeand discuss it in every session.

In Sport and Economics we will provide an economic analysisof professional sports, as well as the economic lessonswe can obtain from analyzing the organization and behaviorof sport competitions. The focus of this subject is mainlyoriented business related issues, like sponsorship and bran-ding. We will concentrate our analysis in leading sportscompetitions and sport events mainly from a Europeanperspective.

First Year

Principles of Business Administration is a subject thatprovides students an introduction of basic concepts concernedwith the firm. For this purpose, it is intended to make anintroductory review of the management functions whilehighlighting important issues such as the nature of thefirm, its environment, and associated tools for decision-making. This course will allow students develop teamworking skills, autonomous learning, and feed their sensibilitytowards ethical, social, and environmental issues relatedto the firm.

The objective of the course is to introduce the basic conceptsand tools used in macroeconomic analysis. In this coursethe student will learn how to use and compare differenteconomic models to analyze and understand currenteconomic issues. The course studies the functioning ofthe aggregate economy both in the long run and in theshort run, and covers many of the issues that dominatethe theoretical and political debate: unemployment, inflation,growth, etc.

The aim of this subject is to provide techniques of calculuswith functions of several variables necessary for analyzingeconomic problems. In terms of knowledge, at the end ofthe course the student will be able to:1) Extend the concepts of one variable functions to severalvariables.2) Understand the fundamental tools of calculus withfunctions of several variables.3) Pose and solve static optimization problems with andwithout restrictions.4) Complement the theoretical tools learned using appropriatesoftware to solve problems and exercises.5) Apply all the acquired concepts to economic problems.

The purpose of this course is to explain how differentfinancial markets work and to analyze investment decisions.In particular, the student will learn the concept of risk onthe financial markets (risk vs. return), how to create optimalinvestment portfolios as a function of the risk-return utilityof the investors and choose among alternative investmentsbased on the available financial information. The studentwill also analyze the main characteristics of fixed-incomeand derivatives products and learn how to use Excel andGRETL as a tool for financial decisions.

The course provides the student with an overview of Inter-mediate Microeconomics. This course covers a wide rangeof topics, starting from the analysis of competitive markets,and including also monopoly, oligopoly, game theory, uncer-tainty, general equilibrium and market failure. The courseaims to provide the student with a sufficient knowledgeto understand economic models and apply mathematicaltools to the economic analysis.

The course begins by studying concepts of Statistical Infe-rence, such as hypothesis testing and contingency tables.Then, it introduces two linear models: Analysis of varianceand simple linear regression. The course also includesexploratory data analysis and applications to Economicsand Business.

Global Political Economy is designed as an introduction tothe main ideas, trends, events and forces which shape thepolitical, institutional and social framework in which theworld economy develops. For this purpose the course takesa multidisciplinary approach combining questions fromdifferent social sciences such as economics and politicalscience. This analysis will help students develop a criticalunderstanding of the new reality of the world economy,which some define with the sole word "globalization" butwhich has many different sides to it. During the course weshall address the role and position of the economies ofSpain and Europe in this global framework.

This course equips students to use English as an essentialtool in the business world. Students will learn to expressthemselves correctly both orally and in writing within theirworking environment; to speak in public and field questionsfrom the audience; and to read and write professional texts.This course is intended for students with an advanced levelof English (B2-C1), and may not be taken in combinationwith Business Communication I.

This course equips students to use English as an essentialtool in the business world. Students will learn techniquesof spoken and written communication in Business context.By taking this course, the student will be able to developskills communicating with clients, colleagues and otherprofessionals as well as understanding sources of informationon economics issues in English.

The American Marketing Association defines marketingresearch as the function that links an organization to itsmarket through the gathering of information. We want tostudy the way in which this information facilitates the iden-tification and definition of market-driven opportunities andproblems for a firm, as well as the way in which a companymay follow the development and evaluation of marketingactions.

The main goal of this course is to analyze how EconomicTheory can be used to understand crucial aspects of orga-nizations. In order to analyze the main features of organizationswe will use, at the theoretical level, techniques developedin Game Theory and at the empirical level we will use Expe-rimental Economics tools. We will first present the existingtheories of the firm before analyzing in a second part theboundaries of organizations. In the third part of this coursewe will use principal-agent models in order to derive a atheory of incentives setting in firms. We then draw on theprevious models to analyze issues of cooperation in orga-nizations. The approach is both empirical and theoretical.This course will make extended use of microeconomic

Operations Management is a subject in which the OperationsSystem of the company is analyzed. The Operations Systemincludes all the activities and decisions related to the designand production of products and services in a company. Inthe case of production companies, the Operations Systemsconcerns especially decisions related to the flow of materials.The Operations System is a key area to ensure the com-petitiveness of a company, so their understanding is veryimportant for comprehensive understanding of the com-pany.

This course aims to further students understanding of cor-porate finance learnt in previous finance courses and togive a deeper knowledge of various financial products. Inparticular, we are going to learn more on fixed-income andderivatives products. Also on equity (stocks) and finally weare going to focus on capital structure decisions, dividendpolicy decisions, and investment project valuation.

The class is intended to familiarize the student with thestructure and functions of the foreign exchange market.Additionally students will analyze the dynamic behavior ofexchange rates and both their real and nominal macroeco-nomic effects.

It is a course on Basic Time Series Analysis. We start defininga time series, followed by the different ARMA-type processes.Topics covered in this course are, among others, estimationmethods, hypotheses testing procedures, such as Wald,Likelihood Ratio and Lagrange Multiplier tests, modelselection, explaining the Box and Jenkin’s methodologyand seasonality issues. Finally we will learnt about prediction,non stationary time series, structural time series modelsand long memory processes and frequency domain methodsin time series.

“Economía Europea y Española” is an undergraduate courseon the European Economy, with a special focus on theSpanish Economy. This course combines lectures, oral pre-sentations and class discussions, as well as a group project.This course provides students with an introduction to themain features and problems of the European Economy.

*Note: This course is taught in Spanish but the material ofthe course is available in English and there is the possibilityto make the exam in English.

Business Policy is a subject aimed to understand the centralsignificance of policy and strategy to top managers andtheir organizations. For this purpose, it is analyzed howenvironments, external and internal, affect the functioningof an organization and the associated methods to assurethat policies and strategies are implemented.

Business ethics almost always hits the headlines in thewake of scandals, but hardly ever when entrepreneurs andmanagers do good deeds. These are often met with a skep-ticism difficult to eradicate for, given the profit motive, suchstories are just “too good to be true”. Why so? After a shortintroduction to the origins and development of businessethics, this course will present a more constructive approachbased on the notion of “moral capital” or virtue. We shallalso explain how the firm, through the proper ethical pers.
