THE PASADENA SENIOR CENTERPeople Serving People Since 1959

Since Pasadena's earliest days, citizens have sought ways tomake their city a better place in which to live. As early as 1951,they began noting the number of Pasadenans who had enteredtheir mature years and questioned what the community could doto enhance their lives. It was not uncommon for a community tocare for its young people, but it was a new step to address thequality of life it offered its older members. The concept for the
Pasadena Senior Center grew out of that concern.
On October 25, 1957, the Pasadena-Altadena Committee forSenior Citizens, formed by Pasadena's City Directors to investigateways to serve seniors, outlined a plan. The City responded byproviding the site for a senior center in Memorial Park andfloating a bond issue to construct it. A non-profit board wasnamed to operate the Center. In 1959, the Junior League ofPasadena joined the project in a sponsorship that continued for
ten years and ultimately provided thousands of volunteer hoursas well as funds. The Pasadena Senior Center first opened itsdoors in May of 1960. Thus began a partnership between the publicand private sectors that created the first non-profit seniorcenter in Southern California.
In November of 1997, the Center re-opened a rejuvenatedfacility that allowed us to greatly expand our activities. InMarch of 1999, in keeping with its high standards, the Pasadena
Senior Center was awarded national accreditation by theNational Council on Aging's National Institute on Senior Centers. This accreditation made the Pasadena Senior Center the firstnationally accredited center in the State of California.
Today, we continue our level of excellence as our seniorschoose from a wide variety of experiences that will educatethem, inform them, make them fit for life, involve them, andentertain them. Seniors fifty and over are welcome 364 days a
year regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, nationality or residency. The Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are united in theirmission - to improve and enrich the lives of seniors.
