The mass was beautiful and I would like to congratulate the students on their respectful behaviour and outstanding singing. Following mass we processed over to our St Peter’s Community Hall for the cutting of our St Peter’s Feast Day cake. This is always a highlight for us with our eldest student, Miss Hailee Banner and our youngest student, Master Diamond Por, cutting the cake. All the students received a piece of cake to eat with their morning tea. After morning tea the students worked in their House Groups on a rotation of activities. These included: making origami paper fish, decorating painted rocks, viewing a video story about St Peter, and making St Peter’s Bookmarks. During these sessions the students worked with their Guardian Angels. Principal’s ReflectionTē tōia, tē haumatiaNothing can be achieved without a plan, workforce and way of doing things.

Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St Peter and St Paul.

Saint Peter and Saint Paul were both foundation leaders of the church, working with both the Jewish and gentile communities, showing that the message of Jesus was for all people.

Peter was a fisherman but gave this up to follow Christ. He was born with the name Simon but Christ named him Peter, which means rock. He was chosen as one of the Twelve Apostles and became a leader of the early Christian church. Saint Peter was the first Pope and is often depicted in statues holding a set of keys. These are the keys to the kingdom of Heaven.

Peter was one of Jesus’ followers and we too, are trying to be powerful followers of Christ and follow in his footsteps, just as Peter did. Today we thank God for the life of Saint Peter and Saint Paul and ask that we too will be fishers of men.

Our day began celebrating mass with our parish community. Science UpdateThe month of July marks one year since Mr L returned from his time on placement at the University of Waikato’s School of Science. This brought an end to phase 1 of the Science Teacher Leadership Programme and kicked off phase two.

During August 2015, a Science self-review was conducted. This research aimed to establish the state of Science teaching in our school at the time. The research also provided us with baseline data on the confidence of our teachers to teach Science as a subject, our students’ engagement with Science, and community perception. A similar review will be carried out again at the end of 2016.

This week, our school will submit a ‘Science Impact Report’ to the Royal Society of New Zealand. The report is a requirement by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Enterprise - the government department that funds the programme. Even though this report does not include data from a full ‘self-review’, it is a chance for our school to give an account of all the wonderful learning that has occurred so far this year.

In compiling the report, we could celebrate a multitude of Science experiences students have had over the last six months. A real strength of the classroom programmes were the way teachers were able to integrate Science learning into other parts of the curriculum, particularly Literacy. The report further includes data gathered from student surveys. One such survey, was the NEMP Science Survey that focused on student engagement. This questionnaire was completed by 12 year 4, and 12 year 8 students. Here follows a summary of responses:

‘How much do you like doing Science at school?’17 out of 24 students responded circling the ‘extremely happy face’.The other 7 students circled the ‘happy face’

‘How often does your class do really good things in Science?’Heaps = 2Quite a lot = 1Sometimes = 20Never = 1

‘How good do you think you are at Science?’Extremely happy face = 7/24Happy face = 13/24 Sad face = 0/24Extremely sad face = 0/24Don’t know = 4/24

‘Do you want to keep learning about Science when you grow up?Yes = 16/24Maybe = 8/24No = 0/24

Year 7 students completed an online ‘Science Engagement’ survey compiled by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER). Results from this survey were very positive, when compared to responses from August 2015. Overall, this report proudly celebrates student engagement and a marked growth in teacher confidence.

Next stepsOur teachers will continue their journey of professional development in the Nature of Science strand. We trust that our students will continue to be engaged through hands-on experiences. We are planning to get community members more involved in classroom programmes through opportunities to share their Science experiences with our students.

Science Evening in term 3 - an opportunity to share the content of the “Science Impact Report’ with our community, as well as, having a go at some of the experiments done so far this year.
