Following and challenging

conventions: inspiration from existing products

contents page

Main Images

Main images on double page spreads conventionally take up at least one half of the double page spread and in some cases even overlapping onto two pages. The examples here are from Q and NME and as you can see they take up one page and are usually framed with a midshot. I chose to take a midshot photo for my magazine in order to depict my artist clearly. Moreover I made the picture extremely larger than the page however cut it off at the page fold as I thought this was effective and followed the style of my magazine

Drop Caps

Drop caps are a convection that magazines use to introduce the double page spread article or even sometimes to introduce the start of a new paragraph. These are some examples of drop caps from NME and Q. I followed this convention in my double page spread as I thought that it followed to followed my house style and the rest of my magazine really well. Moreover I chose to keep my drop caps the same colour as the rest of the text rather than changing it as I thought it flowed with the simple look of my magazine.

Titles

Titles are important to a magazine so that you know what artist you’re reading the article about and is also good for when the audience is scanning through the book so they can easily find the article they’re looking for without having to read all of the text.

Page Numbers

Page numbers are a convention and a necessity and page in the magazine so that the readers can quickly and easily find the articles they're looking for using the contents page. Most magazines print them out on the bottom of the page out the way but I felt like rbeaking conventions as I thought it suited my magaznies style at the top of the page.

Collums

Collums are used to paragraph the article into different sections and are often used in double page spreads as a question answer squeme usually is used on double page spreads. Moreover if all of the text was in one block it’d be harder to read.

Pull Out QuotesPull out quotes are very conventional as it allows the reader to see a main feature of the article or also is used to make the reader read the article by putting something out of context to make the reader want to read the rest to find out why the artist said what was in the pull out quote
