APRIL 22, 2018 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Jottings from Fr. Joe…

PARISH GROUPINGS AND ASSIGNMENT OF CLERGY will be announced at all Masses the weekend of April 28 and 29 in every church of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. As a follow up to this announcement, a general meeting will be held in the Saint Edward church of the parish on Monday evening, April 30 at 6:30 PM. Please Note: THERE ARE NO, REPEAT, NO CHURCHES OR PARISHES CLOSING AT THIS TIME!!!!!! There will be some parameters that will be changing in the life of each parish, specifically the times of celebrating weekend and weekday Masses. This decision will be based over a nine month period of time during which study and discussion of Mass attendance in the parish groupings and other factors will be evaluated before a final implementation in October, 2018.

MY PARISH OF BAPTISM, located in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is undergoing major changes, as are all the parishes in the archdiocese. Saint Charles Borromeo, located in Drexel Hill, PA, is now “twinning” with Sacred Heart (formerly an ethic “Polish” parish) in Clifton Heights, PA. They are sharing clergy, catechetical and pastoral ministry resources and a reduction of their Sunday Masses. It’s a long cry from the days when Saint Charles had 4 priests in the rectory as well as weekend help from Villanova (that’s my connection to ‘nova) to assist at the 7 Sunday Masses in the parish. The grade school had over 1,000 students, 12 Immaculate Heart of Mary sisters and 4 lay teachers; half of us went home for lunch, half had a government lunch in the church hall; 60+ students in each class room. The school closed in 2003 (after 144 years of operation) when it became financially impossible to maintain due to declining enrollment. I have fond memories of Saint Charles and the neighborhood I grew up in. Early in my priesthood I was blessed to be able to celebrate Mass in Saint Charles Church where I had served many a Mass under the scrutiny of Father Ford. Mary Ann Nerney, from down the street, became an IHM nun and now is the social service outreach minister in the parish. Kathy Erdlen, a junior high romance, is the director of religious education and has a son in the seminary. Irish and Italian Catholic parishioners whose immigrant roots went back to the 19th century have been replaced by Vietnamese, Korean, Indonesian and Hmong Catholics in the 20th and 21st centuries. Growth and its corresponding adjustment, getting out of the box, moving onward in a sea of grace: the Body of Christ breathes in the SPIRIT as it did on the First Pentecost and continues 2000 years later. We shape new models to do what the church has been doing since day one: to learn Jesus, live Jesus, love Jesus - whether in Drexel Hill or Clifton Heights or Blawnox or Harmar or Indianola.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES ... ♦ Why worry?- Pray! ♦ Courage is fear that has said its prayers. ♦ Crisis in your life? Pray to God and get a puppy.

APRIL 22, 2018 FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

In our Diocese

I Am The Good Shepherd - The image of God as shepherd and his promise to lead his

people in safety appears throughout the Bible. It is one of the most tender images of God that we

can have as he assures us of his constant care and protection in

our lives. This care applies not only to us individually as his

children, with the shepherd carrying us in his arms, but also to us

collectively as the Church, with God leading his flock in safety. This repeated promise to shepherd his people is our guarantee

that God is in charge of his Church and that he leads us no

matter the circumstances, As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we may wonder where the Lord is leading us. While it is natural for us to resist change, it is also an opportunity

for us to grow in trust of God, our shepherd and guide, that he

may transform us and his Church. As we learn the decisions

regarding Parish Groupings and Clergy Teams next week, may

we call upon our Good Shepherd to lead us and our parishes in

the years ahead.

This Weekend of April 21/ 22,…

We welcome The Bethlehem Christian Families

Bethlehem Christian Families, a nonprofit organization through Land of Peace, will be with us speaking about the Christian situation in the Holy Land and selling Crucifixes, religious are work, rosaries...all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. Since tourism is greatly depleted, Christian families in the holy land, who depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. The goal of this mission is to build a Charitable Hospital in Bethlehem and help the needy families in the Holy Land and Middle East. Sale of these goods will help them very much and also give you the opportunity to have “something” authentic from the holy land.

For more information, please visit www.landofpeace.org and www.bcfmission.com.
