CLARIS EDWIN SILCOX FONDS – 1903-1961. – 2.36 m of textual records.
Claris Edwin Silcox (1888-1961) was a Congregational/United Church minister, a writer and a church
administrator. He was born in Embro, Ontario, to a prominent Congregational family. He studied at the
University of Toronto, Brown University (Rhode Island), and Andover Seminary (Massachusetts). He was
ordained in 1914 and served churches in the United States. He researched and wrote on issues of
religion and society, 1925-1934, notably Church Union in Canada (1933), and Catholics, Protestants and
Jews (1934). He returned to Canada to serve as the General Secretary of the Social Service Council of
Canada, 1934-1940, and as Director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, 1940-1946. He
was involved in the founding of the United Nations, and wrote, edited, preached, and lectured until his
death.
Fonds consists of correspondence, sermons, speeches and articles concerning religion and world events,
religious education and many other subjects, reports, diaries and memorabilia, service bulletins, clippings,
and records of the Social Service Council of Canada.
