The publication provides factual information about the areas of activity under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture – food industry, agriculture and rural life, fisheries. Factual data mainly reflect the situation in 2012. Comparison with earlier years has been based on the start of the EU financial period or the year 2007.

Databases of Statistics Estonia, Ministry of Agriculture, Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), Veterinary and Food Board and other authorities have been used as data sources.

Dear reader!

The publication you are holding in your hands is a fact booklet compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture that gives a survey of Estonian agriculture, rural economy and fisheries in 2012. To provide a broader overview, the booklet includes data since 2007 to show how life and economy have developed in Estonian rural areas during the current programming period of the EU coming to an end this year.

Firstly, employment in rural holdings has remained stable and unemployment has even decreased to some extent. Constant increase in the number of rural holdings can be pointed out as a good sign. On the one hand, agricultural production is concentrating, on the other hand, the labour force freed from agriculture is heading for other sectors and rural economy is getting more diverse.

Secondly, thanks to the EU support agricultural holdings have been able to modernise and intensify their production. Organic farming is a big emerging sector, cultivating 15% of Estonian usable agricultural area. Estonian food industry has also undergone considerable development.

Thirdly, Estonian fisheries have also reached solid ground. Substantial investments have been made into fishing industry, ports and coastal areas, as a result of which Estonian fishing industry is now being able to export its products. This ability has been eagerly used by Estonian fisheries sector.

These were some observations drawn from the given data. I hope the booklet manages to provide important and useful information for everyone.

Enjoy!

Helir-Valdor SeederMinister of Agriculture
