Ihave had the pleasure of being a part of the East End Chamber serving on the Board since 2000 and as Board Chair since 2017. Over the years, I
have had the joy of connecting with many East End locals and Chamber Members. I have been privileged to participate in the growth of Houston’s East End by working and serving alongside business leaders, community servants and leading educators who care deeply about equipping this community for success. The East End is a diverse community with a rich history and strong industry that is linked to the success of Houston. It is remarkable to work in
the East End and experience the sense of community and innovation as the East End climbs the ranks of top Houston areas to live, work and play!
In 2018 we added two new programs “East End Women in Business” and “East End Mean’s Business – Connecting and Growing Business Through Knowledge and Procurement.” These proved to be helpful and beneficial to our members. We invite you to join us for our 2019 programming that will include these two events and others like our Port Appreciation Luncheon, Local Industry Global Economy, Scholarship Golf Tournament and East End Awards Celebration.
LOOKING FORWARDThe Chamber’s mission and vision are to connect businesses to promote economic expansion and investment in the East End and be the premier business and community support organization for promoting and sustaining business expansion, investment and economic development in the East End. This is a high calling and I am motivated by the shared commitment of fellow board members and Chamber staff to ensure our focus is intentional, our partnerships are strategic and there is a strong return on investment for our members. We will work tirelessly to engage current members and connect with new partners to form win-win alliances that help us fulfill our mission. Together, we will find new opportunities with partners both in and outside of the east end to grow our membership, strengthen our impact and increase our reach and role in the greater Houston economy.
Lastly, I believe the foundation for economic growth and prosperity is connected to education. For many years, the Chamber’s Education Foundation has invested in the next generation of East End students by collaborating and partnering with renowned educational institutions and East End Businesses to create programs and curriculum that equips students for success. As we equip and provide coveted scholarships and mentors to students, we serve the needs of residents and students in the East End. Together, we are strengthening pipelines between schools, community and industry to prepare East End students for job opportunities that exist right here. Through the great work already being done by the Chamber’s Education Foundation to build a strong, qualified workforce – there is nothing we cannot achieve!

Chamber Member ConnectionBy Sonia RamirezAs the East End is booming with possibilities so are the partnerships being formed among local businesses creating a strong infrastructure within the community. Small business owners are the backbone of this neighborhood some of which have been here for generations while others like 3 Amigos Graphics is making great strides with the products they offer attracting the attention of larger corporations such as Valero Houston Refinery through its connections made at the East End Chamber of Commerce.
Situated in the heart of the East End at 5002 Navigation Blvd is 3 Amigos Graphics, a family owned and operated business since 2011. Juanita Sandoval is the owner of 3 Amigos Graphics and shares that the idea for the business started as a friendly wager with her husband. “My husband was going to another screen printer for a job and I joked about it and said that I could do them cheaper for you than what you’re paying for.” As fate would have it, lady luck was in her favor as Sandoval went on to share that “literally within days everything fell into place after I said this. I won my bet.” And as they say, the rest is history as 3 Amigos Graphics was born and on their road to success. With no other competitors in the area offering the types of services 3 Amigos Graphics does today on a grander scale in the East End, Sandoval and her team took advantage of this and opened what has turned into a successful business venture for them. “I’m a strong believer that if you will something it will happen. I said it and it happened and here we are now!”
As a member of the East of Chamber of Commerce for three years, Sandoval shared it has been an added bonus being involved with an organization that provides the networking opportunities that they do. “Frances and her team have been very supportive and were here for our grand opening which was very exciting,” shared Sandoval. “We’ve had several inquiries because of the attention they have given us and it’s been really helpful.” It was through the Chamber that Sandoval was able to make a member connection with Michael Walter of Valero Houston Refinery for a community project
they are working on. Walter, who is the Lead Community Relations Specialist for Valero has made great strides in his short time with Valero recognizing the talent that the East End encompasses by bringing 3 Amigos on board for this special project. When referring to the Chamber’s online business directory, through which he found 3 Amigos, Walter had this to share, “As we seek to increase our investment in the East End, having that resource available helps us identify businesses that are in the Chamber and here locally. Valero’s philosophy is to share its success with the community and we’re always looking to find new opportunities to use area businesses whenever we have a need that can be filled here locally.”
As a founding member of the East End Chamber, Valero Houston is an important advocate in supporting educational institutions in the area. When the need came for providing shirts for the faculty and staff of J.R. Harris Elementary School they turned to 3 Amigos , shared Walter. “We were able to go to 3 Amigos to provide the design and embroidery on the shirts and as a result, we will be able to use a local business to support a local school.” “We are in a transition phase so the services we are providing them is going to help us grow and move into a new direction that we are looking at going in,” shared Sandoval. “Having businesses come and look for us and actually doing business with us takes us to another level expanding our professionalism. Having larger businesses like Valero take time to
look at our services and like what we offer is huge for us.”
With a no minimum policy and working with other organizations such as the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department, their volume of work has picked up shared Sandoval. “As far as screen printed shirts we push out about 1,000 to 3,000 a month.” Among other services 3 Amigos Graphics can offer include embroidery, full-color banners and decals, promotional items, and yard signs to name a few. What makes this small business stand out from the rest you might say is the opportunity they take to give back to the community by offering classes for others interested in getting into this business as well.
“We’re a family-owned business and one of the things that’s important to us is giving back to the community,” shared Sandoval. “We volunteer at the little league and donate a lot to help them. We also have our annual Christmas tree giveaway every year. Last year, we gave about 45 Christmas trees, served about 300 plates of food, and gave about 150 toy bags.” A wonderful sentiment to the heart and soul of a business who gives back to a community they grew up in, and now serves proudly with welcoming arms. Working alongside corporations such as Valero, a longstanding staple among the East End, this partnership is a wonderful tribute to the members of a Chamber whose programs and initiatives are not only impactful but rewarding making this neighborhood stand out as it continues to grow and expand into the future.

What began as a marketing exercise in 2005 to brand the area east of downtown Houston with a name that would herald its arrival has caught on – much like the place itself. EaDo’s area encompasses a triangle demarcated by US 59, I-45 and the West Belt freight rail line. EaDo is just a stone’s throw from the George R. Brown Convention Center, Discovery Green Park, Toyota Center, and Minute Maid Park, and Home of the BBVA Compass Stadium. It used to be an area of railyards, warehouses industrial uses, but is rapidly changing to become residential and entertainment oriented, with great transportation making up an excellent walkable environment. The former home of Houston’s Chinatown, EaDo still reflects some of this heritage amongst all of the new urban development. South Central Station will serve as a resource to students in the magnet school’s criminal justice program.” The grand opening celebration was held this past August welcoming the community and its students in time for the fall semester.
The HSLJ isn’t the only groundbreaking new design among HISD schools. The historic Austin High School is also getting a facelift as the demolition phase is well underway. Also a part of the HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program that funded HSLJ, “the $79.6 million project calls for a new facility that preserves the original building’s architecturally significant building structure and can accommodate up to 2,000 students,” shared HISD’s News Blog. “This is an exciting time for the Austin High School community,” Austin Principal Steve Guerrero said. “Change is never easy, but it will be worth it when we see the end result — a modern, new school that enhances our academic and career training programs and inspires pride in our students and community.” The main building was constructed in 1937. The state-of-the-art updates will transform this landmark gem into a more modern, open-space concept providing a different learning experience for this new generation. Students and staff are being housed in a Temporary Learning Center (TLC) located directly behind the existing school building during construction.
Among the renovations of local schools in the area, the East End has also seen a boom in housing and business developments throughout its various neighborhoods. The latest developments include the rise of New Hope Housing. Expanding on its existing constructions, New Hope Housing’s newest addition located at 3315 Harrisburg Blvd.
New layers of change are upon the already majestic beauty that is East End Houston. With its ties to the past still firmly planted among the landscape of the area neighborhoods seen throughout its longstanding businesses and historic homes, the East End is fast becoming a mecca of up-and-coming developments set to take this historic community into the future. Around every corner you can still view the stories of the past as they are portrayed among various colorful and significant murals but it’s hard to deny the changing of the guard coming up to not only enhance the beauty that already exists but add layers of growth through bridges that will connect and reach far beyond what our ancestors could have imagined for an area already rising with new hope.
A wealth of opportunities sitting among abandoned warehouses and land waiting to be restored among this treasured gem of a neighborhood, “EADO” as it is affectionately called, are rising up and reinventing itself as it takes on new projects such as the newly opened Mason Park Bridge. The 485-foot-long, 16-foot-wide suspension bridge will provide a gateway from Mason Park to the Brays Bayou Greenway trail providing safe pedestrian and bike crossings of Brays Bayou. An iconic landmark adding to the community’s ever-changing needs in keeping with the times of Mason Park- “Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow,” as its website states. In the evenings its majestic towers will illuminate the night sky with its beaming lights inviting the community out for those nice evening strolls. To celebrate, a 5K fun was held during its grand opening, along with a picnic in the park to welcome the community. Mason Park is located at 541 South 75th St.
One of the newest additions to the area is the HISD High School for Law and Justice (HSLJ) located at 3505 Coyle, Houston, TX 77003. “The new $40 million campus, which is funded through a combination of bond funds and real estate proceeds,” shares the HISD News Blog page, will also showcase a realistic courtroom, crime-scene investigations lab, and a law library among its many other state-of-the-art features enhancing the real-world experience for its students. HSLJ Principal, Carol Mosteit, had this to share about the progress of the school, “This is going to be a beautiful building that will enhance our law and justice curriculum and provide a wonderful learning environment for students.” HISD’s News Blog went on to share that “the building’s close proximity to the Houston Police Department

Houston, TX 77003 will also be the headquarters for the corporate offices of the New Hope Housing administration team. This award-winning organization is dedicated to providing “life-stabilizing, affordable, permanent housing with support services for people who live on very limited incomes,” shares its website. “From inception, our focus has been on adults living alone on very modest incomes, and we have grown into Texas’ leading provider of single room occupancy (SRO) housing.” With developments located across various neighborhoods in the city, this latest expansion will continue to be a beacon of hope to connect folks looking for affordable housing, and supportive services to rebuild their lives among the impeccably maintained properties they can proudly call home.
Not to be outdone, BakerRipley announced in 2018 that it is proudly calling this bustling neighborhood home as one of the newest updates to the business landscape of the East End. BakerRipley shared that its headquarters would move to a new office space alongside their first community center, Ripley House located at 4450 Harrisburg. “In the future, our leadership team will continue to guide the organization and build upon our financial strength by working with donors, businesses and government agencies to secure resources that will allow us to create and deliver flexible programs that meet the evolving aspirations of the people we serve,” shared their website regarding the move.
What better place to visit for those remodeling plans than an organization that took roots deep in the heart of the East End to provide the materials and supplies its community needed to continue to rebuild after the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. RePurpose Depot located at 305 McFarland St,
Houston, TX 77011, is a welcomed addition to the East End as Houston’s newest Reclaimed Building Materials retail warehouse. With an inventory that changes as much as the weather, you are sure to find new and used materials for any fixer-upper project you may be working on. Open to the public from 10-5 p.m. Thursday-Sunday, RePurpose Depot is helping this historic community remodel for half the price of big box stores one home at a time. With their 1 year anniversary coming up in December, this Houston-area Partner Warehouse of The ReUse People (TRP), a national 501(c) 3 non-profit can also help you coordinate the deconstruction of your home. A process that “provides an environmentally-friendly way to clear your lot, keep materials out of the landfill, and save money on your demolition costs,” shares its website. From lighting fixtures, cabinets, and doors, this gem of a warehouse opens up a whole realm of possibilities for the designer in you.
There may be change around every corner of the East End, but one thing is for sure the generations of the past are working
alongside the partnerships coming into this historic neighborhood making sure to preserve its identity while still steamrolling forward toward a future that is transforming this bustling community into a destination of thriving entrepreneurs. A hub adding to the fabric that makes this neighborhood a stand out focal point of innovative designs moving it towards a bright future of opportunities for continued growth among its residents.

The Annual Education Symposium began in 2013, to create a bridge between industry and education to create a workforce that meet Houston demands. Today, we continue to discuss partnership models that are effective. Look at the current changes in schools and discuss how industry can get involved and make a difference. The half-day event, held at the Federal Reserve Bank, has a Breakfast & Lunch Address with break-out sessions relevant to the current workforce trends/needs. We bring East End principals, teachers, counselors, students, industry leaders, community leaders and members together to create a career pathway for students in our community.
East End - My Career Path is a soft-skills program that was developed to provide 11th and 12th grade students with a certification based on social skill learnings and career pathways. The program is currently in the Pilot Stage for the 2015-2016 academic year at Austin High School and Sanchez High School. East End - My Career Path also welcomes business professionals from the community to speak with the students about the career paths they chose and expose them to various careers in their industry.
The East End Chamber of Commerce Foundation is committed to serving the educational and communal needs of Houston’s East End by partnering with public officials, Chamber Members, and the community to offer workforce development, monetary support and guidance to local students.
The mentorship program pairs students with industry professionals from our community. The Mentor Program is designed to help students succeed in school and in their careers.
EAST END SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Founded in 2006, The Foundation is committed to supporting the educational needs of area students and has awarded over $325,000 in scholarships the last 12 years. The above students received recognition at our 6th Annual 2018Education Symposium where we strive to bridge industry and education by building an effective workforce. After receiving their scholarships, students are placed in our mentorship program where they are partnered with industry professionals from our community. East End Chamber Foundation
