R-Biopharm news R-Biopharm – dedicated to food safety IV/2019 RIDASCREEN® Egg The launch of our optimized, new RIDASCREEN® Egg test (Art. No. R6411) is a major step forward for ensuring safe analysis of egg allergens in food and to help towards the protection of egg allergic persons. This convenient ELISA test reliably detects traces of the most important two main allergens, ovomucoid and ovalbumin, in their native and processed form in food. This is important as eggs are used in a variety of processed foods and most test systems only detect native egg protein. Trilogy Analytical Labs was recently accredited as a reference material producer in accordance with ISO 17034:2016 and is, therefore, one of the first manufacturers for certified, naturally contaminated reference material for mycotoxin analysis.

As a result of this accreditation, Trilogy completely revised its product portfolio and now offers certified, naturally contaminated reference materials as well as certified mycotoxin standard solutions. These two product ranges offer the necessary metrological traceability that ISO/IEC-17025-accredited labs need for their processes, like method developments and instrument calibrations.

In addition to certified products, Trilogy also sells a large number of naturally contaminated quality control materials and analytical mycotoxin standards in crystalline and liquid form.

These products are ideal for daily use in the lab for quality assurance as control samples or to create standard curves for HPLC analysis. The reference materials mentioned above, and the mycotoxin standards can be obtained from R-Biopharm directly. The article numbers are as follows:

EHEC stands for enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli and is pathogenic to humans. These bacteria are often referred to as STEC (Shigatoxin-producing E. coli) or VTEC (Verotoxin-producing E. coli) and are divided into different serogroups due to their

antigenic structure. In addition to the well-known O157, the O-groups O26, O45, O103, O111, O121 and O145, also referred to as the "Big Six", have been implicated in an increasing number of food-borne diseases.

Are there any mycotoxins in cannabis?

Information from R-Biopharm Rhône, Scotland

With increased legalization particularly in Canada and the USA of recreational and medicinal use of cannabis and cannabis products, attention has focused on quality standards and safety. As cannabis plant materials (leaves and flowers) are air-dried, inevitably the possible presence of unauthorized pesticide residues and mycotoxins has become of concern. A significant result of collaboration between R-Biopharm and FERA Science Ltd. has been the development of manual and automated methods for the analysis of both aflatoxins and ochratoxin A (OTA) in a diverse range of cannabis products. The methods recently published in JAOAC International have shown the effectiveness of immunoaffinity column (IAC) clean-up for aflatoxins and OTA in cannabis dried leaves and flowers, hemp tea, cannabis oils and capsules, cookies, chocolate brownies and energy drinks. The methods provide options of manual IAC clean-up using multi-mycotoxin columns such as AFLAOCHRA PREP® (Art. No. RBRP89/89B) and simultaneous LC determination or automated in-line clean-up with IMMUNOPREP® reusable cartridges. Both approaches provide excellent recoveries of aflatoxins and OTA from spiked matrices, good

precision and importantly chromatograms free of interferences from co-extractives from complex matrices such as chocolate brownies. For the future these methods will provide the means to ensure that cannabis plant materials and subsequent derived oils used for recreational and medicinal use can be tested and thereby demonstrated to meet the same standards as foods for potential mycotoxin contamination.

The transmission to humans can occur, for example, by consuming raw or insufficiently heated food such as raw beef, undercooked burger patties, sprouts or raw milk for instance. The DIN CEN ISO/TS 13136 is based on a two-step real-time PCR procedure. First, the most important STEC associated virulence factors stx1, stx2 and eae are tested and then in the case of a positive result, the most important serogroups are tested next. These are the so-called "Top 5": O157, O111, O26, O103 and O145.For a safe and sensitive detection, after enrichment according to DIN CEN ISO/TS 13136, the DNA can be isolated quick

and easy with the SureFast® Speed PREP kit (Art. No. F1054). The SureFast® STEC 4plex (Art. No. F5165) allows simultaneous detection of the key STEC associated virulence factors stx1, stx2 and eae as well as the serogroup O157. In case of a positive finding for stx1, stx2 and eae, two other new multiplex systems can be used in order to test for the most common serotypes ("Big six"): SureFast® Escherichia coli Serotype I 4plex (Art. No. F5167, detection of O26, O103 and O121) and SureFast® Escherichia coli Serotype II 4plex (Art. No. F5168, detection of O45, O111 and O145).
